The United Airlines MileagePlus Membership lets you earn miles for each flight you purchase from United Airlines. These miles can be redeemed not just for free flights, but they can be used to purchase a variety of goods and services from third-party merchants.

There are several membership levels and each one has its own special collection of perks.
Premier Levels and Perks
The most basic level of the Membership is the basic MileagePlus Membership. There are four elite status levels that offer a progressively greater level of perks. To begin with, the basic program is entirely free of charge. It will allow you to accumulate points for qualifying purchases, at a rate of five miles per dollar spent. You can not only earn points from purchasing flights from United, but also for purchases from its partners. These include a wide range of dining, entertainment and retail shopping experiences. When you accumulate enough points, you qualify for the premier levels of the membership.
- Premier Silver – You will need to achieve 25,000 premier qualifying miles to unlock this premier level. At this level, you will earn seven miles for every dollar you spend.
- Premier Gold – This level requires 50,000 premier qualifying miles. You will earn eight miles for each dollar spent, along with priority boarding and lounge access on international flights.
- Premier Platinum – Platinum level requires 75,000 premier qualifying miles and earns you nine miles for each dollar spent. It has additional perks to those available for Gold.
- Premier 1K – This premier status requires 100,000 premier qualifying miles. You get your own private phone line for premier support, access to most sold out flights, along with other priority perks.
- United Global Services – This is a top-end invite-only program for United’s best customers.
How United Airlines Stacks Up to the Competition
One of the biggest advantages of the United Airlines Mileage Plus Membership is the sheer number of destinations it makes available. Unlike regional airlines that have limited range, United Airlines has one of the best networks of flights across the entire continental United States. Contrast this, for example, to a more limited range airline such as Hawaiian Airlines, which has fewer destinations.
In addition, United’s international range, greatly expanded through its Sky Alliance partners, makes it possible to redeem points and fly for free around the world. As a member of its Mileage Plus Membership, you earn points for all purchases. While service animals are widely permitted, the United Airlines pet policy for other animals has several key details that can trip you up. In this piece, we'll cover the most important details you need to know about United Airlines pet travel, including the United Airlines dog policy.

United Airlines' pet policy
United Airlines will only accept cats and dogs as in-cabin pets. There is a $125 charge for each one-way itinerary where your pet accompanies you in the cabin. Additionally, United will charge another $125 for any one-way itinerary within the U.S. with more than a four-hour stopover or any one-way international itinerary with more than a 24-hour stopover.

One of the most important details of the United pet policy is that your pet will need a reservation. United limits the number of animals it allows in-cabin on certain flights. So, although United will allow you to add a pet to your booking any time after you book, it's best to make sure there's availability for your pet when you book your flight. Even though United no longer has change fees , you'll be stuck rescheduling your trip if your particular flight isn't allowing more in-cabin animals.

United Airlines' pet carrier requirements
The United pet policy allows for both hard-sided and soft-sided carriers. Hard-sided carriers must be no more than 17.5 inches long by 12 inches wide by 7.5 inches high. Meanwhile, United recommends that soft-sided carriers be no larger than 18 inches long by 11 inches wide by 11 inches high. However, the only firm requirement for soft-sided pet carriers is that the carrier fits under the seat in front of you (hard-sided carriers must also fit underneath the seat in front of you).
United stipulates that only one pet is allowed in each pet carrier . Additionally, the United pet policy states that the animal must be able to stand up and turn around in its carrier.

United Airlines' pet cargo policy
United Airlines does not currently allow any pets in cargo. Previously, the United pet policy did allow pets to travel as cargo. However, United's program for pets in cargo, PetSafe, was suspended a few years ago after some tragic pet deaths . There is no indication when (or if) this program will resume.

How to use the United pet policy
United has multiple options for booking a pet on your flight. First, there's a link to book a new trip with your pet . But, if you already booked your trip, you can add a pet to your existing trip by searching for your flights on the United website.

Bottom line
The United Airlines pet policy can make it challenging to travel with your pet. After all, United is one of many airlines that doesn't allow animals to travel in the cargo hold on flights. Further, the United pet policy is restrictive regarding the types of pets that can travel. In particular, you'll only be able to fly with cats and dogs that can fit into a pet carrier of the appropriate size.
Finally, United will only accept a certain number of pets in the cabin per flight, so you'll need to reserve space for your pet early.

United Airlines flying with pets
What is united’s policy on pet acceptance.
United Airlines accepts pets to travel in the passenger cabin or shipped separately with United’s PetSafe program .
In-cabin pets are accepted for transportation on domestic flights (except Hawaii) and flights between the U.S./Canada and Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, and South America .
For international travel, rules for in-cabin pet acceptance vary widely. Visit United’s website for information on animal embargoes and restrictions or contact United Reservations for additional assistance. In-cabin pets are not accepted on flights to/from/through Australia, New Zealand, Micronesia, etc.
In-cabin pet policy applies to flights operated by United and United Express only . For codeshare flights, you must check with the operating carrier for that airline’s in-cabin pet policy.
What pets does United Airlines allow in the cabin of the aircraft?
United Airlines accepts domesticated dogs and cats to travel in the passenger cabin. Only pets at least 8 weeks old (puppies at least 16 weeks old for international travel) are accepted.
All other animals must be transported via PetSafe® through United’s Live Animal Service.
How do I book in-cabin pet travel?
Advance arrangements are required when booking an in-cabin pet. You can include a pet in your reservation online or by calling United Reservations .
When you request an in-cabin booking for your pet, the Flight Search results you are viewing are based on the in-cabin pet policy. You will be notified if in-cabin pets are not allowed in all segments of your itinerary.
In-cabin travel for pets is booked on a space-available basis. Pets without reserved space will be accepted only if there is space available after pets with reserved space have been accommodated.
In-cabin Pets
United Airlines will accept no more than one in-cabin pet container per passenger . To travel with two in-cabin pets, you can purchase an additional ticket. Unaccompanied minors are not permitted to carry pets in the cabin. It is the passenger’s sole responsibility to comply with all state entry requirements which may apply. Pets must travel on the same flight(s) as the passengers who are responsible for them .
Only one pet per kennel is permitted, except that two household birds will be permitted in a single kennel.
Restrictions
The total number of in-cabin pets permitted on a single flight is limited by aircraft type and cabin. Based on aircraft, cabin and seat, the following restrictions apply:
- Two pets per flight are allowed in United First, United Polaris Business and United Business (select aircraft only).
- No pets are permitted in United First, United Polaris Business and United Business on Boeing B757 200, B767, B777 or B787 aircraft (due to inadequate storage space under the seat).
- Maximum four pets per flight are allowed in United Economy on all United flights.
- On United Express flights operated by partner airlines, the maximum number of pets varies .
- Passengers traveling with in-cabin pets on a Boeing 757-200 aircraft must be seated by the window.
- Passengers traveling with in-cabin pets may not be seated in the bulkhead or an emergency exit row.
Pet Kennels
In-cabin pets must be confined in an approved kennel, either soft-sided or hard-sided, subject to inspection and approval by United Airlines before acceptance. Passengers traveling with in-cabin pets must check in at the airport with a United agent to receive a bright yellow bag tag for the pet kennel. The pet kennel may be carried in addition to a carry-on bag. While in the boarding area and on board the aircraft, pets must remain in their kennels with the door secured at all times .
While on board the aircraft, the kennel must be stowed under the seat in front of the passenger at all times. In order to be properly stored, the maximum dimensions of the kennel must not exceed:
- For hard-sided kennels:17.5 inches length x 12 inches width x 7.5 inches height (44 cm x 30 cm x 19 cm).
- For soft-sided kennels: 18 inches length x 11 inches width x 11 inches height (46 x 28 x 28 cm). Exception – maximum 10 inches height on Boeing 737 MAX 9 aircraft .
An in-cabin pet is subject to a $125 service charge one-way ($250 for round-trip travel). United will charge an additional $125 service charge for each stopover of more than 4 hours within the US or more than 24 hours outside of the US.

Service Animals
Service animals accompanying qualified individuals with disabilities are accepted in United and United Express aircraft cabins, without charge. Only dogs that have been trained and certified are recognized as service animals. A service dog should sit at the passenger’s feet but cannot protrude into the aisles to comply with safety regulations.
United requires for each service dog the following DOT forms: the Service Animal Training and Behavior Attestation Form and Service Animal Relief Attestation Form (Relief Form – for flights scheduled to take 8 hours or more). For traveling to international destinations, documentation may be required. Local regulations at the passenger’s final or intermediate destination(s) may apply and impose requirements or restrictions (e.g. pet allowance in the passenger cabin).

United Airlines In-Cabin Pet Policy
Pets Allowed
United and United Express permits small, domesticated cats and dogs to travel in the cabin on flights within the continental United States (not Hawaii).
Form Requirements
Your pet must have a health certificate and rabies certificate reflecting a current rabies vaccination administered more than 30 days prior to flight for primary vaccinations or vaccinations administered after the previous vaccination had expired.
Age Requirements:
Pets must be at least 4 months old and their carrier must fit comfortably under the seat in front of you. Your pet airline carrier will count as a piece of carry-on luggage. One pet is allowed per carrier.
Passengers can purchase an extra ticket to accommodate a second pet in a carrier if desired.
Route Restrictions:
Pets are not allowed to fly in the cabin on flights to, from or through Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, Guam, Cuba, India, Panama, South Africa, Tahiti, Trinidad and Tobago or the United Kingdom. No service is provided to Lagos, Nigeria or Dubai.
Pets are not permitted in First or Business Class on Boeing 747, 757, 767 or 777 aircraft due to lack of space under the seat.
Carrier Requirements
If your dog or cat meets the requirements listed in United Airlines pet policy to travel in-cabin, you will need an approved airline pet carrier . Carriers can be rigid or flexible and must have a waterproof bottom, adequate ventilation and secure fasteners. (Zippers are preferable.) The maximum dimensions for hard-sided kennels are 17.5 inches long x 12 inches wide x 7.5 inches high (44 cm x 30 cm x 19 cm). The maximum dimensions for soft-sided kennels are 18 inches long x 11 inches wide x 11 inches high (46 cm x 28 cm x 28 cm).
Reservations
You must notify United Airlines that you are traveling with a pet. Reservations can be made online or by calling 1-800-864-8331. We suggest that you make your airline reservations as far ahead as possible as there are a limited number of pets allowed in the cabin of each flight. Travelers with pets are also not permitted to sit in bulkhead seats or seats in exit rows.
You will check in at the passenger counter as animals are not checked in at curbside. A fee will be collected at the time of check in. Your pet airline carrier will count as a piece of carry-on luggage.
$125USD for this service which can be paid at the reservations counter at the time of check in. (An additional charge of $125 on flights with layovers more than 4 hours in the US or more than 24 hours outside of the US.)
Service Dogs
Trained service animals are permitted to travel in the cabin with qualified individuals with disabilities. Only dogs will be accepted as service animals.
No sooner than 48 hours before departure, United Airlines will require the following forms for people traveling with an emotional support animal: veterinary health forms and immunization records, signed letters from a licensed doctor or mental health professional and signed certification of training.
As of January 8, 2019, puppies and kittens under 4 months of age will not be accepted on United flights as service or emotional support animals. ESAs are limited to cats and dogs. Other animals are evaluated on a case by case basis.
No emotional support animals will be transported after February 28, 2021. Bookings must be made prior to January 11, 2021.

Therapy animals are considered neither comfort nor service animals and are not subject to provisions provided for service and emotional support animals.
United Airlines Cargo Pet Policy - (PetSafe® Program)
For dogs and cats that are too large to travel in the cabin or are traveling unaccompanied, United Airlines will transport them under their PetSafe Program in the cargo hold.

Route Restrictions
United does not provide service to Dubai, India, Australia or Lagos, Nigeria. Live animals will not be transported out of Seoul, Beijing or Chengdu nor will they be transported in or out of Shanghai until temperatures fall.
Aircraft Restrictions
Until further notice, United will not fly live animals in the cargo hold in their Boeing 787 aircraft.
Reservations must be made between 5 and 30 days before travel. All bookings for international travel must be made through an IPATA agent (www.IPATA.org).
One dog or cat is permitted to travel in one crate; however, two kittens or puppies are permitted in the same crate if they are younger than six months, are of comparable size and weigh less than 20lbs. (9 kg) each.

Puppies and kittens must be at least 2 pounds and 10 weeks or older for domestic travel. For international travel, proof of rabies vaccination no sooner than 3 months must be provided. Puppies and kittens cannot travel with United internationally until 30 days after the rabies vaccination was administered.

All required paperwork for the country of destination will need to accompany your pet if flying internationally.

Pick Up and Drop Off
Refer to United Cargo Pick Up and Drop Off Locations in the United States. For international destinations, it will depend on the airport and you should contact United for that information. For flights into Mexico City, pets can no longer be collected at baggage claim; they will be taken to United's cargo facility where an agent will clear your pet with customs officials. You will pay for these fees when you pick up your pet. Note that pets should not be flown into Mexico City during the weekend when customs is closed.

Temperature Restrictions
No bookings will be accepted at the following airports between May 1 and September 30 due to high temperatures: Las Vegas (LAS), Palm Springs (PSP), Phoenix (PHX) and Tucson (TUS). No bookings will be accepted that involve Chengdu or Shanghai, China between June 15 and September 15.
Comfort Stops
Comfort stops will be required on flights with one or more layovers that exceed 12 hours in total. Pet owners are responsible for fees associated with comfort stops. Dogs and cats will not be permitted on itineraries with more than 2 layovers.
Crate Requirements
United will allow 2 puppies or kittens under 6 months to travel in the same carrier as long as they are of the same species and there is room for them, otherwise, only one pet is allowed per carrier. Note that United can no longer transport Series 700 kennels.
Metal hardware must be used to fasten the top and bottom halves of your pet' crate together. Crates with clips securing the top and bottom of crate will not be accepted. Additional holes secured with cable ties must be added.
The crate must have air ventilation on 3 sides for domestic flights and 4 sides for international flights.
Crates must be hard plastic, wood or metal. Your pet must be able to sit up, stand up and turn around in the crate without touching the top of the crate. No crates taller than 34” will be accepted on any routes. Series 700 (giant) crates or custom crates larger than 34" in height will not be accepted.

United serves locations worldwide in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, India, the Caribbean, North and South America including the United States, Canada and Mexico.
United is also approved to fly into London Heathrow, Edinburgh, and Glasgow (accompanied pets only) which are approved Border Inspection Posts for the United Kingdom.

Whether you’re new to traveling with your dog or a seasoned dog voyager, you’ve probably heard a lot of stuff about what’s allowed and what’s not. That’s probably because airline policies are constantly changing, and because rules differ from one company to another. Unfortunately, the confusion over rules is not helped by all of the misleading information and photos easily found on online.
I’ve heard more than a few people suggest that they’ve been able to fly with their large dogs in cabin if they just fork over the money for an extra seat. But it’s not that simple. So what are the rules when it comes to buying an extra seat on an airplane for your dog? Here’s the low down.
Heads up: This article is about flying with pet dogs – not service dogs . Service dogs are not considered pets – they’re working dogs – and they have their own set of rules when flying.

What dogs are allowed to travel in the cabin of an airplane?
It depends on the airline.
Every airline has their own size allowances. Some companies don’t have specific weight allowances, while others allow bigger dogs in cabin. The most common size allowance for dogs in cabin is 20 pounds – the dog and carrier combined must weigh that amount or less.

Can I buy an airplane seat for my dog?
It depends on the airline, but if you’re flying a major public airline the answer is typically no.
Passengers are usually able to purchase an extra seat for themselves if they deem it necessary – you might want the extra space, feel more comfortable, or want a row to yourself. To book two seats, customers can either book online or call reservations directly, depending on the airline.
But booking another seat doesn’t mean your dog can sit in it. You will still have to abide by the airline policy, meaning that in all likelihood your dog will have to remain stowed in a carrier under the seat in front of you.
But I’ve seen photos of dogs sitting on airplane seats on Instagram!
I’ve seen them too! Heck, I’ve even taken those photos (see above).
But dogs sitting on airline seats during a flight on a major public airline is technically not allowed, even if the dog is a service dog and even if they’re still in a carrier.
Here’s probably what happened:
- The dog in the photo was placed on an empty seat before take-off or after landing.
- The owner removed the dog from their carrier and placed them on the seat when the flight attendant wasn’t looking.

I admit, I’ve been lucky enough to have flown with very nice flight attendants who didn’t mind when my dog sat in my lap or on an empty seat next to me. But this is a bonus and should not be expected. It is technically against airline rules.
Which airlines allow you to buy an airplane seat for your dog?
You may have noticed some semi-private airline companies popping up in the last few years. These small companies fly to limited locations, typically in smaller-sized planes. Their size allowances for dogs are usually more generous, and some of them allow you to purchase seats for your dog!
Here are a few options:
JSX : If you have a medium or large dog, you can purchase an extra seat, and your dog will be permitted to lay on the floor directly in front of the adjoining seat. As long as your dog is leashed, well-behaved, and the seats are adjacent window (C) and aisle seats (B), you’re all good.
Aero : For medium and large pets between 20 and 65 pounds, you can purchase an additional seat at full price.
Tradewind Aviation : Pets of all sizes, including large-breed dogs, are welcome to fly in the spacious cabins of Tradewind Aviation’s Citation CJ3s and Pilatus PC-12s. There’s a limit of one party with pets per flight, and an additional seat must be purchased for dogs over 100 pounds.
Surf Air : If a Passenger wishes to travel with an Animal that weighs more than twenty (20) pounds (a “larger animal”), the Passenger must notify Surf and purchase a separate Single-Use Flight Pass for the animal at least two (2) days before the flight. If a Single-Use Flight Pass has been purchased for a larger animal, and if requested by the Passenger in writing at the time the Passenger books the flight for the animal, the animal may occupy a seat so long as it is harnessed.
BLADE : For dogs heavier than 25 pounds, the owner must purchase an additional seat.

Can I buy an airplane seat if I’m traveling with two dogs in cabin?
These major airlines allow you to travel in cabin with more than one dog.
There are some airlines that allow you to purchase a second seat when traveling with more than one dog, but please note that your dogs must still remain in a carrier that’s stowed under the seat in front.
If you’re flying with more than one dog, you can purchase additional seats on the following airlines:
JetBlue: In order to bring a second pet, a second seat and pet fee must be paid.
United: If you want to bring aboard an additional pet, you’ll need to buy an extra ticket for that pet and pay an additional $125 each way.
Can I buy a seat for my dog on an international flight?
If you are traveling with more than one dog in cabin, you can purchase an extra seat on an international flight with either JetBlue or United. The second dog must be stowed in a pet carrier under the seat in front.

Taking a dog on a flight with you is possible nowadays, with many airlines allowing dogs in-cabin. However, buying a seat for your dog on a plane is not possible when flying with most airlines . Most airlines only permit dogs on flights, if they travel within a travel carrier that fits underneath the seat in front of you.
There are some airlines that will allow you to buy a seat for a dog on a plane. However, it is important to note there are strict rules and regulations you must adhere to.
In this article we will list these airlines policies on buying your dog a seat on the plane, as well as general airline policies for flying with dogs in the cabin.

How to Buy a Seat for your Dog on a Plane
As far as we are aware, the only airlines that will allow passengers to buy plane tickets for their dogs to have a seat are United and Jet Blue .
Jet Blue state that passengers are only permitted to fly with one dog in-cabin. You are able to purchase an additional seat next to you, to place your dog carrier. Alternatively, your dog will have to fly stowed under the seat in front of you.
United permit passengers flying with 2 dogs in cabin, as long as they are in their own carriers and you purchase an additional ticket for the seat next to you. However, United do not allow dogs to sit on the seats. Your second dog will still need to stay stowed under the seat in front of the additional space.
It’s important to note that both Jet Blue and United require advance reservations for in-cabin pet travel. You must also check that there is a spare seat available next to you.
How much does it cost to buy a seat for your dog?
The fee for taking a dog in the plane cabin is $125 per pet, for both Jet Blue and United .
When flying with United , there is an additional $125 service charge for each stopover of more than 4 hours within the U.S. or more than 24 hours outside of the U.S.
Thus, when taking two dogs on board, the charge will be $250, plus an additional $250 for any stopovers listed above.
Of course, you will also have to pay for the plane ticket for the seat next to you.

What are the travel carrier restrictions for my dog?
Jet Blue requires that dog carriers are no larger than 43x31x21cm. When flying with United, the limit for a soft-sided carrier is 46x28x28 cm and for a hard sided carrier the limit is 44x30x19 cm.
We recommend that you use a soft sided carrier as they will provide your dog with much more space. They’re also easier to manoeuvre when on the plane and are often lighter than hard sided carriers.
General Airline Policies for Flying with Dogs in Cabin.
1. Your dog must be healthy.
Dog’s generally must have a pet passport – a term used to represent the documents showing that your dog is healthy and ready for travel.
A rabies vaccination and health certificate are usually required to take your dog on a plane. Please note that health certificates must issued from an authorised veterinarian.

2. Dogs must be small and light.
Most airlines require that dogs and their carriers weigh less than 8kg combined. This is because they usually require dogs to fit in a pet carrier that must fit underneath the passenger seats.
The rules and regulations have been set out by International Air Transport Association (IATA) ensure that dogs are comfortable when travelling. Thus, inside their travel carriers, dogs must be able to stand up, turn around and lie down in a natural position in their kennel (without touching any side or the top of the container).
Please note the weight and size does vary between airlines:
Japan Air allows 10kg, where TUI allows just 6kg.
Therefore, if you are the owner of a large dog, it is likely that you will need to ship him in cargo hold.
3. Certain breeds may not be able to fly.
Some airlines have restrictions on which breeds they allow to fly.
United doesn’t permit any pit bull type dogs in their cabins.
It is rather common that airlines do not allow brachycephalic or snub-nosed dogs of any “mix” to fly, however this is often only mentioned as checked pets. This is in the interest of your dog’s own health and safety. Certain breeds often are more prone to certain illnesses which put them at risk when flying. Due to some cases over the years of dogs not making it to the end of their flight, airlines have gotten stricter on which pets they allow on the plane.
American Airlines do not allow the following dog breeds, or their mixes, to fly as checked pets:
- Affenpinscher
- American Staffordshire Terrier
- Boston Terrier
- Boxer (all breeds)
- Brussels Griffon
- Bulldog (all breeds)
- Dogue De Bordeaux
- English Toy Spaniel
- Japanese Chin
- Mastiff (all breeds)
- Presa Canario
- Pug (all breeds)
- Staffordshire Bull Terrier
- Tibetan Spaniel
Different airlines have different pet policies, double check your airline to see if your dog breed can fly with you.
4. Your dog must be well behaved.
To ensure that the flight is undisturbed, your dog must be obedient to your commands. Furthermore your dog must behave appropriately in public, thus, he mustn’t bark or growl at other passengers or staff.
If your dog does not behave in an appropriate manner, some airlines may transfer him to the cargo hold at an additional cost, or refuse to transport him all together.
Some airlines require a consent form to ensure your pet is flight-ready.
For example, Lufthansa require two copies of a fully completed and signed forms at the check-in counter.
Documents required to Fly with Dogs In-Cabin
The documents required to fly with a dog in cabin will vary depending on which airline you are flying with, and where you are flying from and to. Generally you will require the following:
- Microchip certificate
- Rabies vaccination certificate
- Animal health certificate
- Additional vaccination certificates
- Rabies titer test results
- Parasite treatment certificate

a) Microchip.
Your dog can get microchipped at your local vet or a charity, such as RSPCA .
Not only is it a requirement when traveling with dogs, it is in your best interest. If your dog was to go missing whilst abroad, then you are far more likely to be reunited.
b) Rabies vaccinations.
If you want your take dogs on flights, it is likely that he/she requires a valid rabies vaccination. Particularly if you are taking your dog on an international flight as this is a requirement for entering most countries.
Most countries require dogs to have their rabies vaccination between 30 days and 12 months prior to importing.
You can get your pet’s rabies vaccination at your local vet, alternatively some charities offer this service for free or for a discounted price.
c) Animal health certificate.
Most airlines will require an official animal health certificate issued by an accredited veterinarian in order to export and import dogs.
In most cases, your health certificate will also need to be endorsed by the country’s authority responsible for the import and export of animals. For example, if you are traveling from the US, you will need your documents endorsed by the USDA. If you are traveling from Canada, you will need to have your documents endorsed by CFIA.
d) Additional vaccinations.
Depending on where you are flying to, your dog may also require additional vaccinations or treatments.
For example, Turkey requires that all dogs are vaccinated against parainfluenza, leptospirosis, parvovirus, bordetella, hepatitis and distemper before being allowed into the country.
e) Rabies titer test.
Some countries require pets to have a rabies titer test before entering. This is usually the case when you are traveling from a country that is considered high risk for rabies.
If your dog requires a titer test the process is as follows:
- Your pet will have a blood sample taken at least 30 days after the rabies vaccination.
- Your vet will then send the blood sample to an approved blood testing laboratory.
- Your pet’s blood test results must show a rabies antibody level of at least 0.5 IU/ml.
- You must wait 3 months from the date the blood sample was taken before you travel.
- The vet will give you a copy of the test results.
f) Parasite treatment.
To enter many countries, dogs are required to be treated against internal and/or external parasites before entering. This includes treatment for tapeworm, fleas, ticks, nematodes and cestodes.

What you need to know about United Airlines pet policy in 2023

Flying with pets can be a very daunting task without the right help. Thankfully, more airlines are embracing the concept of emotional support animals and are allowing them on flights. United Airlines is one airline that allows passengers to travel with their pets or emotional support animals (ESA). With United Airlines, pets can travel in the cabin on specific flights as carry-on baggage or as cargo baggage.
To travel with ease, there are paperwork requirements that you need to have. These include a health certificate, proof of vaccination, customer acknowledgement forms, and the pet’s picture.
These paperwork requirements are not limited to these only; different aircraft could have more form requirements. There are many other policies on pets allowed, pet age, pet crate requirements, breed restrictions, and more. All these policies affect the amount of paperwork you will submit.
This article aims to shed light on all the paperwork and documentation for your pet that you will need to fly with United Airlines. We will also look at the differences between in-cabin pet policy, cargo pet policy, and policies for service animals.
Document Requirements to Fly With Pets on United Airlines
You must prepare adequately before traveling with an emotional support animal or pet . United Airlines requires you to submit certain documents before your flight for review and approval. You can send these documents through their online portal, preferably five days before your trip.
Failure to submit these documents before your trip can cancel your reservation. You will also need to carry printed copies of the same documents.
Form Requirements Pre-Flight
Here are the forms you need to send for review and approval before your flight date.
- A scanned copy of your emotional support animal’s health certificate . The certificate should be signed by a licensed veterinary doctor and preferably within 10 days before travel.
- A scanned copy of the customer acknowledgment form, signed and dated . This shows that the pet owners agree to follow all the pet travel requirements and adhere to the rules set on United Airlines flights.
- A picture of your pet to verify its breed because United Airlines have certain breed restrictions.
- A photo of your pet crate to verify if it is the correct size for your pet and ensure it follows all the pet crate requirements set by United Airlines . The photo should be a clear view that shows all the different sides of the crate. After submitting all the documents, United Airlines will review everything to make sure everything checks out or not. Flights operated by United Airlines and United Express have an in-cabin pet policy that makes room for pets to fly in the cabin. The rules for in-cabin pet travel vary from flight to flight. When connecting to multiple flights, you must check with individual flights to know their policies.
What Pets do United Airlines Allow in the Cabin?
United Airlines allow domesticated cats , dogs , rabbits , and small household birds.
Kittens and puppies must be at least two months old for domestic flights. They must be at least 16 weeks old and be fully weaned on international flights.
The policy on the number of pets you can travel with entails that you can only travel with one pet carrier per passenger. If you want to travel with more than one in-cabin pet, you must purchase an additional ticket.
Each kennel must carry only one pet; only household birds can share a kennel. They also have kennel size restrictions for in-cabin pets. - There are restrictions on pets traveling in the cabin on certain flights to or from specific destinations. These destinations are Hawaii, Panama, Tahiti, South Africa, New Zealand, Trinidad, and Tobago.
- Only four pets per flight can travel in the cabin on all United Airlines flights.
- Pet owners traveling with pets cannot occupy exit rows, bulkheads, or premium plus seats. When traveling with Boeing 757-200, they must also take the window seat because it has more space under the seat.
- Two household birds can travel in one carrier, but it is only one pet per carrier for other pets.
- The pet must always remain inside the pet carrier.
- The person responsible for the pet must also be an adult.
United Airlines charges $125 for in-cabin pets. An additional service charge of $125 for flights with stopovers of more than four hours. You pay the pet fees during check-in at the reservations counter.

United Airlines Pet Policy for Cargo Pets
Pets traveling in cargo do so under the PetSafe program. If your pet is too big to travel in the cabin, it can travel in the cargo. The only downside to pets traveling in cargo is you do not get to be so close to them. Specific policies are different for pet travel in the cabin and the cargo.
The airline only allows cats and dogs to fly in cargo.
Form requirements to travel in cargo
You need to have specific documentation to travel under the pet safe program. Here are some of the paperwork that you need to have ;
- You need to have an original health certificate that has been signed within 10 days of departure.
- A rabies certificate from a licensed veterinary doctor within 30 days before travel.
- You need to sign the customer acknowledgment form to say that you will adhere to the pet safe program rules.
- A photograph of the pet crate showing all sides to verify that it is IATA compliant.
- A photo of the pet to verify its breed.
Cargo Travel Policies
The pet needs to be at least eight weeks old for domestic flights to travel. For international flights, they need to be at least 16-weeks-old.
Unlike cabin pets, two puppies or kittens can travel in the same carrier as long as;
- They are of the same species.
- They weigh less than 20 lb/9 kg each.
- They are less than six months old.
- They are small enough to fit into the carrier comfortably.
The crate should also have excellent ventilation. It can be made of wood, plastic, or metal. The crate should be spacious enough for the pet to stand, sit, turn around or lie down.
Cargo Restrictions
United Airlines has restrictions on pets traveling in cargo to and from specific destinations. Some route restrictions are on flights to Nigeria, Australia, Dubai, or India. It also doesn’t allow cargo travel on flights from Beijing, Chengdu, or Seoul.
It also has breed restrictions on the type of dogs that can travel for health reasons. Here are some of the breeds that cannot travel in cargo on United Airlines;
- Boston Terrier
- Belgian Malinois
- American Bully
- Cavalier King Charles spaniel
- Tibetan Spaniel, among others.
Another restriction is due to temperature. United Airlines does not take pet travel bookings to Palm Springs, Phoenix, and Las Vegas. These periods have very high temperatures that interfere with the animals.
Pet Reservations
Pet reservations need to be done five-30 days before the day of travel. For international flights, you can book your travels through the IATA agent.
The pet fees depend on the route taken. There are different pet cargo fees charges by the route.
The pickup and drop-off location will depend on each flight. Some pets are taken to a United Airlines cargo facility where an agent will clear them. The fees are payable when you go to pick up your pet.
United Airlines Service Animals Policy
United Airlines and United Express accept service animals accompanying people with disabilities without charges. The airlines only recognize dogs that have undergone training as service animals.
Passengers can travel with up to two dogs of more than four months of age.
How Do I Get a Service Dog on United Airlines?
United Airlines welcomes service dogs on board within their cabin. The dogs need to be performing a specific task for an individual with a qualified disability. The qualifying disabilities can be but are not limited to a physical limitation, intellectual disability, or a psychiatric ability.

What Are the Paperwork Requirements for Service Animals?
You need to complete a few forms before flying with a service dog on a United Airlines. These are the forms you will need to fill out from the Department of Transportation;

- The dog should know how to follow instructions and have the proper training.
- You cannot fly within 30 days of a service dog’s rabies vaccination.
- The service dog should sit on the floor in front of your seat.
- The dog must be at least four months old.
- Therapy animals are not service animals, so the same pet policy rules apply to them.
- Traveling with service dogs is free of charge.

What are the kennel requirements?
In addition to the size and weight maximums, the USDA and United Airlines require that kennels meet the following requirements:
- Be leak-proof and escape-proof.
- Be properly ventilated, but not allow any part of the animal from protruding outside of the container.
- Provide enough room for the animal to stand and turn around.
- Be made of metal, wood, or a hard plastic/composite.
- Contain absorbent material or litter.
- Have functional handles on the kennel's exterior to prevent tilting and any direct contact with the animals.
- Be closed securely, but not locked.
- Have labels with the words "Live Animal" in letters at least 1-inch tall on the crate's top and on at least one side.
- Have upright arrow labels indicating kennel's correct position.
What health documentation is required?
Passengers are required to make sure all health and pet travel documents are current and compliant with local, state, federal and international entry requirements and regulations. The passenger assumes full responsibility for penalties assessed by agencies for non-compliance of pet health and entry requirements.
Are there any other restrictions?
United Airlines can refuse to transport an animal due to illness, aggressive behavior, poor kenneling, or extreme temperatures at origin, transfer, or destination airports. Short-nosed dog breeds are not accepted for travel as checked baggage or cargo from June 1 - September 30.
