Floor Plan Symbols & Abbreviations (Your A-Z Guide)
Floor plan symbols help clients understand how a building will be built, remodeled, or repaired.
Floor plans are supposed to be simple diagrams that help you visualize a space and determine whether the design is going to work for its intended purpose — be it remodeling a kitchen, building an entire home from scratch, or mapping out a temporary event space. Architectural floor plan symbols help designers, builders, and architects evaluate the feasibility of their plans, communicate design elements to contractors, and show clients the features of their new home.
Understanding floor plan icons, patterns, and abbreviations can be intimidating — at least at first. That’s why we’ve created this A-to-Z guide of floor plan symbols and abbreviations.
Below, we’ll look at:
- What are floor plan symbols
- Common floor plan symbols
- Common abbreviations

What Are Floor Plan Symbols?
Floor plan symbols are a set of standardized icons initially adopted by the American National Standards Institute ( ANSI ) and the American Institute of Architects ( AIA ).
These standard symbols are used to represent key elements like windows, doors, and structural walls, as well as building materials, furniture, and appliances.
Done right, floor plans quickly communicate the basic layout of the property, how it’s oriented, and how the different rooms and structural elements work together.
However, effective blueprints often require a lot of information in a limited amount of space. Floor plan symbols and abbreviations help remodelers, designers, and builders do just that, while also making them easy to read.
10 Common Types of Floor Plan Symbols
Floor plans use a set of standardized symbols to represent various elements like windows, walls, stairs, and furniture. These symbols may include shapes and lines, numbers, and abbreviations. In these next few sections, we’ll look at ten of the most common floor plan symbols and how they’re used.
1. Compass floor plan symbol and scale measurements
Typically found in the blueprint legend, the scale tells you whether dimensions are measured in feet and inches (imperial measurements), or the metric system, and establishes a system for translating measurements.
Floor plan scales are typically represented in one of two ways:
- As equivalent measurements (¼” is equal to 1’)
- As a ratio (1:100 or 1:48)
Different floor plan drawings might use different scales, depending on what you’re trying to depict. In any case, scales are represented as “scale bars” — black and white lines with numbers — much like a drawing of a ruler.
While Cedreo doesn’t use scale symbols, it does allow users to download plans to scale with the measurements appearing on the plan.
The compass helps you understand the orientation of a property and is represented by a circle with an arrow pointing toward due north.
Unlike the compass you’d typically see on a map, the floor plan symbol doesn’t include cardinal directions; instead, it aims to help you understand how to navigate through a building from the perspective of someone on the inside.
2. Door floor plan symbols
Doors are represented as gaps between walls with lines that show which way the door opens — curved lines for hinged doors and straight ones for sliding doors.
Door symbols also indicate which way the door swings — depending on the type of door — to give viewers a sense of how much clearance they’ll need.
There are floor plan symbols for every kind of door available — from pocket doors to double doors — each aimed at creating a visual representation of their form and function.
Here’s a quick look at some of the more common examples:
- Open doorway. Open doorways are represented as a space between walls.
- Sliding door. Sliding doors are represented as two thin lines extending from a black rectangle.
- Pocket door. Pocket doors are sliding doors that essentially disappear into the wall when they’re open. The symbol looks a lot like the one used for sliding doors, only here, one set of lines slips inside the other.
- Single door. A single-hinged door is represented by a straight line that runs perpendicular to the wall and a curved line to indicate which way it opens.
- Double door. The double door symbol looks like the letter “M,” made from two curved lines that join in the center.
- Bifold door. Bifold doors are most commonly used for bedroom layouts , on closets. The floor plan symbol looks like two peaks, separated by a small space.
3. Window floor plan symbols
Windows are relatively easy to identify. They’re represented as breaks in the wall and are connected by a series of three thin lines—doors, on the other hand, are typically represented using just two parallel lines.
- Standard fixed windows . Standard windows are represented by a single line centered within a rectangle.
- Sliding-glass windows. Sliding windows are represented by three parallel lines that distinguish the openings from solid walls.
- Casement windows. Casement windows are hinged on the sides and open either inward or outward like a door. Floor plan symbols include arcs that indicate which way they open.
- Bay windows. Floor plan symbols for bay windows are a combination of three or more windows that angle outward, extending beyond exterior walls.
4. Wall floor plan symbols
Walls are the most common element in a blueprint and are represented by different types of lines. Thicker lines indicate exterior walls, while thin ones are generally used to show interior walls — however, there are exceptions to that rule.
Here are some different examples of floor plan symbols that depict walls.
- Structural walls. Structural walls are typically exterior or load-bearing walls and are the first walls to go up when construction begins. These walls represent a building’s structural integrity — meaning, you’ll want to define these before you start adding interior walls (which are indicated by thinner lines), windows, or doors.
- Bearing walls. Bearing walls are internal or external walls of the building and exist primarily for the purpose of transferring loads. Any modifications made to bearing walls will impact the building’s structure and foundation. In Cedreo, the thickness of the wall will allow users to quickly delineate between a bearing and a partition wall.
- Partition walls. Partition walls are internal walls that separate rooms. Unlike bearing walls, partition walls aren’t part of the building’s foundation and can be added, removed, and modified as needed — even later in the design process.
5. Stair floor plan symbols
Stair floor plan symbols include a series of parallel lines and an arrow that indicates which direction is “up” based on which level you’re looking at. As is the case with everything else in the floor plan, stairs are drawn from a top-down, 2D perspective and look like a set of connected rectangles.
- Straight stairs. Straight stairs are represented as a rectangle containing a series of parallel lines.
- Winding stairs. Winding stairs are drawn in a “U” shape, composed of several small rectangles.
- L-shaped stairs. L-shaped stairs, as you might imagine, look like a set of rectangles connected in the shape of the letter “L.”
- Spiral stairs. Spiral stairs are an outlier among stair symbols--represented by a circle, with lines radiating from the center (like a wheel or a sliced pie). This symbol features an arrow pointing either clockwise or counterclockwise.
6. Appliance symbols
In plans that include bathrooms, kitchens, or laundry rooms, you’ll typically use floor plan symbols to indicate where you’ll find hookups for major appliances — stoves, washers, dryers, refrigerators, and so on.
In most cases, appliance symbols appear alongside plumbing symbols such as drains, sinks, and toilets.
7. Furniture floor plan symbols
Furniture isn’t always included in blueprints, but it can be useful for helping clients envision how a living space might be set up. With Cedreo, you can easily move or reorient furniture symbols to suit client preferences. (And once you’ve finalized your basic interior design, you can create a 3D rendering of it in Cedreo, complete with 3D furnishings).
8. Plumbing floor plan symbols
Plumbing symbols include fixtures like sinks, tubs, and toilets — items you’d typically find in the kitchen or bathroom.
- Bathtub. A rectangle within a rectangle.
- Shower. A square with an “X” running through it and a small circle in the center.
- Toilet. The toilet symbol is an oval with a rectangle attached at the top.
- Sink. There are several different architectural floor plan symbols for representing sinks. A double sink is two circles inside a rectangle.
- Floor drain. A circle with hatching.
Floor plan abbreviations
In addition to the floor plan symbols and features we’ve mentioned above, designers often use standard abbreviations to communicate additional details in their floor plans while maintaining a clean presentation.

B/L (Bill of Lading,

Beginner’s Guide: How to Read Construction Plans
by Construct-Ed
Knowing how to read construction plans is a critical skill.
Are you a skilled tradesman? Maybe you are a general contractor or you work in the construction industry . Either way, knowing how to read construction plans is a critical skill.
Please enable JavaScript
Learning how to read construction plans is an essential skill for building a career as a construction worker. Construction drawings vary from simple to very complex, so understanding how to interpret the drawings is crucial for completing the project efficiently and accurately.
The ability to read construction plans will not only increase your value to your current employer but is a staple to anyone serious about advancing their career as a professional contractor.
In our beginner’s guide on how to read construction plans we will cover the basics of what plans are, what sort of information they contain, and how to interpret that information.
Construction Plans are 2D Drawings
Construction plans (blueprints) are 2-dimensional architectural drawings that explain the details of a project. They provide a unique visual representation of what exactly needs to be built. Information such as dimensions, parts, placement, and materials for each project can all be found in construction drawings to assure the project is completed correctly.
Aside from the apparent specs and dimensions, construction plans also help communicate what the project is about. They provide construction workers with other important information for the project including building codes, installation techniques, measurements, and quality standards.
Construction Plans Come in Different Sizes
Depending on the size and complexity of a project, some construction plans will require to be printed on oversized sheets while others may fit in the confines of a notebook.
With the continued advancement of technology throughout the construction industry, digital plans are becoming increasingly popular due to ease of making edits and sharing plans among construction team members.
Regardless of how the plans are presented, the importance of understanding construction drawings remains a top priority.
Start building and improving your skills reading construction prints and specifications
Construction plans and specifications are the primary method that the design community communicates project needs to construction and specialty contractors. This course provides a firm foundation of skills for those who are required to be able to read construction prints and specifications.
From residential construction jobs to large commercial projects, construction plans are required to estimate your costs for materials and labor, obtain your permits, establish a construction schedule, and complete the project in a timely manner.
Every project is unique, therefore how you interpret the information is critical. It is a lot like having your own language as a construction worker. You need to understand everything on the construction plan (blueprint) to complete the project under budget and ahead of schedule.
What is Included in a Set of Construction Plans?
When learning how to read construction plans, it is essential to understand what is contained within typical construction plans. Most include a cover page, time block, key notes, general notes, revision block, drawing scale and a legend.
It is crucial that you read everything and understand it before you estimate or start the construction project!
This page usually contains a drawing of the actual project. It also includes the title block, revision block, notes, drawing scale and the legend.
Title Block
Each plan contains a “title block.” The title block often appears at the beginning of a set of construction plans. If you are involved in any type of construction work, you will want to make sure to read it thoroughly and understand it before starting the project!
The shape, size, and placement of the title block can vary. This area of the sheet contains important information about the project as well as the company, typically a professional design firm, that created it. You will see things like copyright information, revision date, plan number, creation date, scale of the drawing, and sheet number.
The title block’s first section lists the blueprint’s name, number, and address as well as the location, site, or vendor. If the drawing is part of a set, that information will also be included. This allows for easy filing and organization. Every block or cell contains an important piece of data. If there is a blank in the title block, the drawing is not ready for release. The authority (checker or engineer) will not sign it if there is missing information.
The second section of the title block contains routine information. Approval dates and signatures are located here. Should you need more information regarding a project’s construction plans, this information should include contact information for further discussion.
The final section of the title block is the list of references. This section lists all other drawings that are related to the building, system, component, as well as all construction plans (blueprints) that were used as a reference or to inspire the project.
Revision Block
Any time there is change to a building, system, or component, the drawing must be redrafted. Those changes are listed in the Revision Block – usually with a date as well.
Drawing Scale
Construction plans (blueprints) are scaled down representations of the final project at a ratio of the actual size . For example, 1/8″ = 1′ (one eighth inch equals one foot). When construction plans are scaled, it helps to put the part into a print size drawing that is easily read by the crew.
The notes will reveal any specifications, details, or information the designer (engineer) thinks may help you understand the drawing. Some notes may even include information as to when the project start time is, for example, “Do not begin work until 7 am.” Information like this can be beneficial to the crew and might even be a requirement of the municipality in which the work is taking place.
General Notes
General notes eliminate the use of lengthy written explanations. It is a note that provides technical information that will apply to the entire drawing.
When learning how to read construction plans, one of the most important components is the legend. The legend is used to define the symbols used in the construction plans (blueprint) .
In some cases, similar symbols can have different meanings depending on the line of work being performed. Your company might also have their own symbols for certain items. The important thing is that you understand the meaning of the symbols regarding the plans you are reviewing.
In addition to the above mentioned, construction plans are also often composed of industry-specific symbols. Be sure you understand what those symbols represent by reviewing the legend for the drawing that you’re working with.
A roofing project, for example, will have symbols for items located on a roof such as HVAC units or skylights, while an electrical plan will have symbols for outlets and conduits.
In conclusion, if you are in the construction industry, knowing how to read construction plans is an absolute must to do your job!

very greatful for the information guide on how to read a construction plan
hello. I would like to know more about how to interprets plans of each section in a building.
pls I will lyk to know more about how to interpret building plan and cross section with dimension and calculations.
I may like to know more about construction plans
Could you include some instruction about “how would you find something on a set of construction/working prints.” Example; to find what type of light fixture is in a 3rd floor dinning room and how much it costs? Or the process to find out the make and model number of a bedroom window. I’m asking for step by step instructions to locate things through the use of the plan symbols and notes, what page to start on and each subsequent step to get the part (answer). Also, say your looking at the cover sheet then where and if a symbol is used describe its meaning and purpose to establish the association of such a process.
Thanks for the information and its really reminds me a lot, we don’t consider, in construction as I can see from here. But I will like to learn more and know how to come up with all this information, am new beginninger in construction
Welcome to the construction business!
I am in the process of checking the structural draft of my future dream house and I can’t seem to grasp the concept. With that, I’m thinking of studying the construction plan. It’s good that you provided an easier way for me to understand. I had no idea that blueprints provide construction workers the other significant information for the project which includes the building codes, installation techniques, measurements, as well as quality standards. I also like how you explained each section.
Th8s is very easy to understand and I would love to get symbols and their meaning to quicken my understanding about engineering drawings.

Plot plans provide valuable information, including the physical boundaries of the parcel and the locations of structures, fences and driveways. Formal plans also show any partial easements of land granted to utility companies for wires or pipes, and rights of way granted to neighbors for use, or to city or county governments for sidewalks or alleys. The easiest way to obtain a plot plan is to use formal government records, but occasionally these have errors that require comparing maps with other plan sources.
Local Governments
County assessors, public works and community development departments, or local planning offices keep copies of plot plans. Local governments frequently offer the plans as part of tax assessment records, and many larger communities make these available online, linking the plans from the website of the county offices. Online records sometimes allow users to print the plot plan using a home printer, and many offer formal paper copies of the document, available by completing a formal request and submitting the document to the government office.
Title Company Reports
Title companies track the chain of ownership for property. Property files and databases - called "title plants" - keep a master record of plot plans for most communities. Firms charge a fee to obtain a copy of the maps, and the documents also come as a component of most title research. Any local title firm can obtain a formal copy of the plot plan, and some real estate offices pay fees to access the formal maps from the title companies or government agencies. Contact a real estate agent or request a preliminary or formal title report for a copy of the plot plan.
Housing Developments
Developers, real estate representatives and construction companies use plot plans for project development and frequently have copies of maps for newer residential neighborhoods. Development offices typically duplicate maps showing all parcels in the neighborhood for potential buyers to compare the sizes and identify any easements. This allows buyers to quickly survey the available parcels to make a final selection. Developers usually keep this information in digital form and can provide a paper copy or send a digital file to enlarge the specific parcel. County officials, including planning offices and supervisors put in charge of approving the development, also keep copies of the maps submitted by developers.
Surveyor and Engineer Documentation
Licensed and state-registered surveyors and civil engineers create maps of official property boundaries that include the location of structures on the property after conducting physical surveys. The formal process offers a legal document, sometimes called a "certified plan," to compare with government plot plans or title company maps. Government agencies sometimes ask for certified plans when physical changes will be made to a structure or land parcel. Surveying helps document property boundaries and physical features when the use changes over time. Communities typically require new plot plans when owners move driveway locations, remodel home exteriors, or replace boundary fences. Most municipalities have legal requirements and restrictions for filing new plans. These include specific regulations about map labeling and the physical size of the document required to submit formal plot plan changes.
