Reviewing the United Airlines Mileage Plus Membership

united airlines seat icons

When it comes to frequent flyer programs, United Airlines’ Mileage Plus stands out for offering opportunities beyond traditional programs. United Airlines has packed the program with ways to earn points through everyday activities, in the process, creating a unique offer. To see if this flight rewards program is worth taking up, we will review how it works and what you get with it.

The Mileage Plus Membership is an extension of United Airlines’ services as a leader in American civil aviation. United Airlines has its home base in Chicago and is active in many large hubs across the US. It has partners in the Star Alliance that include Copa Airlines, Air Canada, Lufthansa, Asiana, Turkish Airlines, Air China, and others.

Eligible Routes

Mileage Plus miles can be applied towards flights on domestic United Airlines flight routes such as:

Not only can you apply Mileage Plus points domestically, but on international routes as well. United Airlines flights are eligible, as well as those of its Sky Alliance partners listed above. This offers you, as a member of the Mileage Plus program, access to free flights around the globe when you redeem your points.

The Benefits of United’s Mileage Plus Membership

The United Airlines MileagePlus Membership lets you earn miles for each flight you purchase from United Airlines. These miles can be redeemed not just for free flights, but they can be used to purchase a variety of goods and services from third-party merchants.

Here are some of the options and merchants where you can redeem United Airlines miles for goods or services:

There are several membership levels and each one has its own special collection of perks.

Premier Levels and Perks

The most basic level of the Membership is the basic MileagePlus Membership. There are four elite status levels that offer a progressively greater level of perks. To begin with, the basic program is entirely free of charge. It will allow you to accumulate points for qualifying purchases, at a rate of five miles per dollar spent. You can not only earn points from purchasing flights from United, but also for purchases from its partners. These include a wide range of dining, entertainment and retail shopping experiences. When you accumulate enough points, you qualify for the premier levels of the membership.

How United Airlines Stacks Up to the Competition

One of the biggest advantages of the United Airlines Mileage Plus Membership is the sheer number of destinations it makes available. Unlike regional airlines that have limited range, United Airlines has one of the best networks of flights across the entire continental United States. Contrast this, for example, to a more limited range airline such as Hawaiian Airlines, which has fewer destinations.

In addition, United’s international range, greatly expanded through its Sky Alliance partners, makes it possible to redeem points and fly for free around the world. As a member of its Mileage Plus Membership, you earn points for all purchases. United is much more flexible in awarding points than Delta or American Airlines, which have been known to throw people out of their reward programs over minor issues.

Frequently asked questions about our seating options

For all fare classes except Basic Economy, you’ll be able to pick your seat or change your seat assignment. If you have a Basic Economy ticket, you’re able to purchase a seat assignment during booking and up until check-in opens. Learn more about Basic Economy restrictions.

You can choose a seat or change your seat assignment for most United- and United Express®-operated flights on united.com , on the United app or through your travel agent. If no seat assignments are available, you can check back closer to departure to see whether seats have become available. Learn more about seating options .

Seat assignments, no matter the fare class you purchase, aren’t guaranteed and could change without notice because of schedule changes, equipment swaps or other unforeseen circumstances.

We’ll always try to assign you the same or similar seat type and location and keep you with your traveling companions when you’re booked in the same reservation, unless you’ve purchased a Basic Economy ticket without purchasing advance seat assignments. We know that your seat assignment is important, so we’ll do our best to keep your original seat preference.

We may briefly hold some seats for operational reasons, and don’t allow seat selection or changes for Basic Economy tickets. If you’re unable to choose a seat, we’ll assign you one at check-in or at the departure gate.

All customers with Basic Economy tickets, including United MileagePlus® Premier® members, are eligible to purchase Economy Plus seating at check-in only.

When you take to the skies one of the most important things when it comes to preparing for your flight is knowing where you'll be seated on the airplane. Like most other airlines, United gives its guests assigned seating on its flights. The majority of customers can select from a variety of seats for free, but there are also options for preferred seating and even upgrades for those who are willing to pay. Here's a look at United Airlines seat selection and United Airlines seat assignment policies.

Most United Airlines flights will have at least two cabin classes: economy and first class. Depending on where you’re going, you may also find business class and premium economy seating.

No matter your fare class, you will be able to choose a seat from the available selection, though how much you’ll pay and the associated fees will differ according to your ticket and various other factors.

How much is seat selection on United Airlines? Charges vary, but generally speaking, the longer and more in-demand your flight, the more expensive it will be for your seat selection.

Basic economy (most restrictive)

Basic economy tickets don't provide complimentary seat selection in any cabin. In exchange for cheaper tickets, you can either opt to pay for a seat assignment or wait until check-in and be randomly assigned a seat.

united airlines seat icons

Families and groups who book basic economy tickets won't be seated together; though again, they can pay to ensure that they’re near each other.

Standard economy

You may be wondering: “How do I choose my seat on United Airlines?” Happily, those booking a regular economy class ticket will have the ability to book a seat for free, although the available options may not be desirable. In this case, customers can also choose to pay for better seats while maintaining their economy class ticket.

If you’re traveling with young children you may want to know: “Does United seat families together?” Yes, it does. If you’re booking an economy ticket or above, United’s system will automatically attempt to seat children under 15 on the same reservation together with their parents.

Preferred seating

Preferred seating features seats with better locations than standard United economy flights. The seats are the same, but they tend to be closer to the front of the cabin. Costs for preferred seating vary depending on the flight, but these are the cheapest paid seat upgrades you can find on United flights.

Economy Plus

Economy Plus seats are within the standard economy cabin, though they’re located just behind first class seating. They provide more legroom than regular economy seats and also offer free alcoholic beverages on premium transcontinental routes. These seats are more expensive than preferred seats.

Premium Plus

Premium Plus is United’s premium economy offering and is available on select flights. This is better than economy class but not as good as United’s international business class, Premium Plus seats are all free for those who book this cabin.

United first and business class

Like Premium Plus, those who book either first or business class can choose any seat within the cabin for free.

Loyal members of United’s MileagePlus program receive additional benefits when booking flights, including better seats.

Silver elite members and above have complimentary access to preferred seating at booking.

Gold elite members and above can pick an Economy Plus seat for free when booking their ticket. Silver members, meanwhile, can choose from available Economy Plus seats upon check-in.

United elite members are also entitled to complimentary upgrades on select flights starting as early as 96 hours before departure.

Wondering what the seats on your flight will look like? United provides a seat map that you can find when booking your flight. Before selecting a flight, you can view the seat map by selecting “Seats” on the search result page.

united airlines seat icons

This will open a live preview of the seats on your aircraft that shows you the layout of the seats as well as which seats are available to select. You’ll also see the seat map during booking, when you’re prompted to select your seats.

united airlines seat icons

After booking, it’s possible to change your seats by going to "My Trips" and selecting "Manage Trips." Once on your specific flight page, you’ll be able to view your seat and select a new one if you desire.

» Learn more: Delta vs. United vs. American

During booking

You’ll automatically be prompted to select a seat when booking your ticket online. Once you’ve selected your flight, you’ll fill out your passenger information and any frequent flyer programs.

Depending on your flight, United may also offer the ability to purchase discounted bundles during checkout. These may save you money over choosing extras individually, though you’ll want to take a look at the costs.

united airlines seat icons

After deciding whether to add a bundle, you’ll be taken to the seat map to choose your seat. A legend on the right will show you which seats are included and the costs of any upgrades.

united airlines seat icons

Once you’ve selected a seat, complete the check-out process and pay for your ticket.

After booking

If you’ve already booked a ticket and would like to select a seat or change your existing seat, you can do so from the “Manage My Trips” tab under the “My Trips” option.

united airlines seat icons

Then, you’ll select “Manage Trip” from your available trips. Here you’ll find your trip information, including the option to change your seat.

United Airlines’ seating policies can be confusing, especially when you’re booking an economy class ticket. The short of it is this: If you book at least a standard economy ticket, you’ll be able to choose a seat for free. You can also pay to have better seats, though some United elite members will receive access to these better seats for free. Basic economy customers, meanwhile, will always need to pay to select a seat.

United Airlines Introduces ‘Preferred Seating’ Right Behind ‘Economy Plus’ Zone For A Fee (Free For Premier Members)

United Airlines has found a new way to earn some extra money by classifying the seating zone right behind the Economy Plus section as ‘ Preferred Seats ‘ that come at a cost for regular Economy Passengers.

united airlines seat icons

Many carriers have already discovered the lucrative income source of selling seats in the front of the plane for extra cash even if these seats don’t even offer the slightest bit of extra comfort. United is just the latest airline to jump on that bandwagon and has sent out an email to their customers today advertising this new feature.

We want you to take advantage of all the great United MileagePlus® Premier® status benefits available to you, so we’re reaching out to let you know about preferred seating, which you’re now able to enjoy. Preferred seats have standard legroom but are closer to the front of the aircraft in the first few rows behind Economy Plus®. While other customers will be required to purchase these seats for an additional cost, as a member with Premier status, you’re able to select any available preferred seats for you and up to eight companions at any time. Since this benefit is in addition to your Economy Plus benefits, it’s great for last-minute bookings and when Economy Plus seating isn’t available. Preferred seating will be indicated on the seat map when you’re booking or selecting seats.

You can access the United website here to learn more about it.

Preferred seating includes United Economy seats that have standard legroom but are closer to the front of the aircraft in the first few rows behind Economy Plus ® . When you purchase preferred seating, you’ll not only enjoy a better seat in Economy, but you’ll also receive earlier onboard service and, when you land, get off the plane and on your way faster. Better yet, MileagePlus members with Premier ® status can select preferred seating at no additional cost and all other MileagePlus members will earn Premier qualifying dollars on preferred seating purchases after travel has been completed. Preferred seating is available on all United and United Express ® flights, and prices, starting at $9, vary based on the route. Customers who are traveling on Basic Economy tickets are eligible to purchase preferred seating.

Honestly I never had the situation where an Economy Plus seat wasn’t available to me as a Premier Member even for last minute bookings, standby and flight changes.

What this does it squeezing even the last drop of juice out of the lemon (passengers) which is standard seats. So far standard seats were always able to be reserved free of charge but with this new feature of Preferred Seats for sale the number of available seats for free will obviously go down leading to an increasing number of passengers who won’t have any seat reservation when arriving at the airport.

Here is an example for a flight from Los Angeles to New York in January:

united airlines seat icons

The price is $9 for a seat in the preferred zone and this includes middle seats. If you’re a family of four this would be $36 to sit in a standard seat and personally I wouldn’t pay for that. So what happens when suddenly the complimentary seats are not available anymore? This will then result in many families not being seated together and then creating a scene at the gate or on board which I can understand as well.

Airlines are taking their nickel and diming mentality to yet another level and the problems that are eventually be caused by this will impact the daily operations. Good for Premier Status customers from Silver upwards but the average person is once again being taken to the cleaners.

While I happily pay for a decent premium seat option that offers additional comfort I’d never pay for a standard seat just because it’s in the front of the plane. The notion that this provides any benefit to the passenger is nonsense.

United flight seat map

united airlines seat icons

Anyone have an idea of why there isn't a middle seat showing up next to the highlighted seat?? I am deciding if that is a good thing or switch my seat!

r/unitedairlines - United flight seat map

Not seeing any attached image.

Didn't upload the first time, up there now!

If you’re on a widebody in rows 20-22: It is a domestic flight on a premium plus equipped plane, but operating as a standard domestic flight, so it isn’t sold as premium plus, but obviously the physical configuration doesn’t change.

If it is a 757-300 with a random absent middle seat: it is an inoperable seat. Seems all 753s have like 5+ inoperable middle seats scattered throughout the cabin and I’m not sure why. If 753s were configured with 255 seats, it would make sense in order to reduce the FAA minimum flight attendants to 5 (250 pax requires only 5, 251 is 6), but that isn’t the case.

Otherwise: post a pic

The seats on the 757s are blocked due to a recent change in the weight and balance policies set by the Faa. United had to either take seats out or just block them off to be in compliance. Best to just block middle seats throughout the cabin.

It is a Boeing 757-200

FA friend believes it’s to do with the new average weight per pax on 757. Something since average pax is heavier they can’t sell every “seat” anymore.

Was wondering if it was weight and balance, but I don’t see how, on a 255K point MTOW plane, the thousand pounds from 3-5 blocked seats matters on anything other than the wintertime transatlantic westbound flights. The 757s running midcon domestic flights aren’t remotely close to hitting weight issues, so it just doesn’t compute to permanently block seats, but not sure what else it would be.

Use seatguru to take a look at your seatmap

Is there supposed to be an image associated with this post?

What's the flight or aircraft? Could be premium economy being sold as e+ or it coud be an exit row or it could just be the back of the airplane where the body tapers in a bit....

I’m guessing this is a Boeing 757-200. On their 16BF 757-200s there are 3 rows (I can’t remember which) that have the middle seat blocked. It’s just been a standard thing on a lot of their routes.

This is essentially a “hard block”, the same kind you’d have for crew essentially though I still haven’t been able to make out the reason for the block yet. Oh well you have one less middle seat to choose from id consider it a win.

This post just helped me so much

How to Read an Aircraft Seat Map

Ben Smithson

If you've checked in online for a flight or selected your seat in advance, you may have been presented with a visual seat map — either allowing you to choose which available seat you would like or showing you where on the plane you will be sitting.

Some seat maps are very easy to read because all seats are either the same or very similar. While others are much more complicated because there is a huge difference between the different seats in the cabin.

Some Basics

You may already know this, but before we get into the complex seat maps, here are some basics:

united airlines seat icons

united airlines seat icons

united airlines seat icons

Premium Cabins

Different economy and premium economy seats within the same cabin are usually all quite similar, regardless of airline. They will usually be in some sort of 3-3, 2-4-2, 3-3-3 or 3-4-3 layout. By all means, look for exit rows as explained above, but otherwise, most seats will be the same.

In business and first class cabins, there can be a huge difference in both cabin layouts and best seats between different airlines. This is because there is a bigger difference in business and first class products between airlines than in economy and premium economy seats.

For a four-across 'straight' 1-2-1 seat map where the middle seats all look the same between rows, it means all seats will have direct aisle access. They will either face directly forward and may angle slightly toward the window or aisle in a herringbone layout.

You may wish to avoid either the front or back few rows if they are close to a galley or bathroom — a seat or seats midway back should be a nice balance.

united airlines seat icons

Another popular layout in business class is a staggered 1-2-1 layout. Rather than each seat directly behind the seat in front of it (like the seat map above), this layout will have your feet in lie-flat mode next to the person in front of you, rather than behind.

united airlines seat icons

This means each 'window' seat will be a choice between a seat right next to the window or a seat near the window, but next to the aisle. The 'true' window seats right next to the window (the A and K seats in the map above) tend to be more private. For the center seats, you will see that the rows alternate between rows with two seats very close together and rows with seats far apart. These are often known as 'honeymoon' seats and 'divorce' seats. If you are traveling with a loved one, you may wish to select the pair very close together, while if you are traveling with a colleague or someone you don't want to be super close to, select the divorce seats to provide more space between you.

Some airlines have a staggered 1-2-1 business class cabin that does space all center seats the same. For a cabin like the one below, there's no center pairs that are closer or farther away — and therefore not really better or worse.

united airlines seat icons

You may also see a large forward/front business class cabin followed by a galley or bathrooms and then a smaller cabin at the rear. The rear business class cabins tend to be smaller and, therefore, quieter and more exclusive feeling. The downside of this can be that meals take longer to serve if crew start serving from the front, so your meal choice may have run out by the time crew get to the rear cabin.

Some airlines will have seat maps detailed enough to show which way the seats actually face. For example, here is a 2-2-2 business class cabin with pairs of seats facing in slightly different directions.

united airlines seat icons

First class cabins on the one airline tend to have seats that are very similar in a very small cabin, so unless you are traveling with someone else or especially want a window seat, it's not as important to select the perfect seat in advance.

united airlines seat icons

In addition to checking the seat map on an airline's website, it's useful to check out resources like SeatGuru , which allow you scroll through an airline's fleet for the best and worst seats.

Meaning of seat color on booked flight

United is upgrading most of its planes to include television screens, power outlets, and more by 2025 while getting rid of smaller jets

United Airlines is giving its aircraft a massive upgrade to keep flyers entertained.

The Chicago-based airline on Tuesday unveiled the largest aircraft order of its history for a total of 270 next-generation Boeing and Airbus aircraft . The order, part of the "United Next" plan, will overhaul United's domestic fleet and make its aircraft some of the youngest in the skies.

Inside the new aircraft will also be a brand-new entertainment suite for passengers with seat-back screens at every seat. More than 2,800 selections of movies, television shows, music, podcasts, and games will be available through the seat-back systems in a 180-degree reversal from United's previous strategy of relegating entertainment to mobile devices via streaming.

United's first class seats will see 13-inch high-definition screens while economy seats will have 10-inch screens. In-seat power will also be offered through USB charging ports under the screens and standard power outlets under the seat.

Mood lighting will be standard on the aircraft for a futuristic look that creates an ambience to match the time of day. Flyers also won't have to stress about finding a home for their carry-on bags as larger overhead bins will be installed that United CEO Scott Kirby says will be able to fit "100%" of bags.

A total of 178 new aircraft with the new interiors will be added to United's fleet by the end of 2023. Existing aircraft will also be upgraded to the new standard through 2025 with the majority of United's fleet being upgraded by the end of 2023.

Regional aircraft including the Embraer E175 or Bombardier CRJ550 fleet will not see the interior upgrades but United is planning to use more "'mainline" Boeing and Airbus aircraft on North American routes that will have the entertainment upgrades.

United's plan will better position the carrier to compete with Delta and will give the airline a leg up on American. Delta is the only airline among the "big three" US international carriers to offer seat-back screens on the majority of its Boeing and Airbus single-aisle aircraft, with the exception of the Boeing 717.

"United, with today's announcement, is certainly eroding some of the product features that Delta has such as in-seat entertainment," Henry Harteveldt, travel analyst and cofounder of Atmosphere Research Group, told Insider, noting that Delta had similarly retrofitted most of its aging narrow-body Airbus and Boeing aircraft with new interiors that include television screens.

United will also quickly surpass American Airlines in the in-flight entertainment realm by offering seat-back screens. American shares United's former thinking that streaming entertainment is the way forward and does not include seat-back screens on many of its domestic narrow-body aircraft.

Beyond in-flight entertainment and power, United will also offer more flights on aircraft equipped with first class and extra-legroom "EconomyPlus" seats, to the tune of 75% more premium seats per departure compared to present levels.

At least 200 of United's 50-seat aircraft will also be retired and replaced with larger jets with more premium seating. The move follows an industry trend of retiring the smallest regional aircraft that don't feature first class cabins.

"United was very clear that it is going to compete not necessarily by having the most first-class seats on a domestic narrow-body aircraft, but certainly they're going to compete with having what appears to be more extra-legroom seats on their planes," Harteveldt said. "And that I think could be a very, very successful strategy."
