Linking Words for IELTS Writing Task 2

The linking words list below is essential for IELTS writing task 2 for high score. The examiner needs to see a range of linking words in your essay to award you a high score for the criterion of Coherence and Cohesion which is 25% of your marks. You will be checked on your range, accuracy and your flexibility of linking words in IELTS writing task 2. These connecting words are suitable for all types of essay writing as well as GT IELTS writing task 2

This is often used to either put your paragraphs in order or used inside the paragraph to list your supporting points.

You will need to support your main points in your IELTS essay. These linkers inform the reader that extra information is about to be presented.

It is a misfortune that IELTS mandates the use of linking words for high scores. Especially at the beginning of sentences, linking words quickly tire the reader being pushed around.

I do not provide them because they are the worst thing to do for your IELTS essay. IELTS does not accept memorised language and the higher band scores are all about flexibility, not templates. Writing task 1 is more formulaic than task 2 because task 1 is a report and most reports are pretty standard. But writing task 2 is all about creating unique sentences connected directly to the topic. This website is about learning and preparing for IELTS the right way.

I’m not exactly sure what you mean as you’ve provided no examples. However, to help understand: The writing test is formal. So, this means all informal language will cause you to lose marks. The only exception is the informal letter in GT writing task 1. The speaking test is informal and you can use all types of language and be as casual as you want in chatting to the examiner. But language should be used naturally, not poetically or in an overemphasized manner. You should talk as though you were talking to a friend.

They are informal and Writing Task 2 is formal.

It is an option but some examiners think it is too informal. There are no rules in IELTS which have word lists that lower your score. It is examiner interpretation. I do not teach this linking word for a conclusion, but other teachers do. This is why it is in the list. My recommendations are recommendations, not rules.

They will certainly help you develop your writing, but they won’t help you develop your writing for IELTS.

I wonder if I am allowed to use specialized words in writing task 2 (as long as they are related to the task rubrics and the usage and the collocation is contextually appropriate). For instance, if the topic of the essay is “imprisonment”, am I allowed to use words like “criminals set free might resort to recidivism”? what happens if the examiner doesn’t know that term? I already know that IELTS guidelines demand that the underlying assumption in the writing exam be the candidate is writing for an academic “non-specialist” reader. Is this fact in contradiction with using technical terms?

It is not a case of being allowed or not allowed. It is about how you use language. If you are pushing high level words into your essay for effect, the language in the essay will become unnatural and will be marked down. So, never aim to impress. However, your example is completely fine. The word “recidivism” is an appropriate word to use for that sentence. Certainly not many candidates will know this word, but it is 100% accurate and appropriate. So, my advice is to use language naturally with the right intent and appropriacy based on your level of English. The examiner will not be specialised in law or other fields – bear that in mind. Your aim here is to hit band score 8 or 9, not to showcase specialised vocabulary. This is a basic English language test, not a test of legal language for example. Pay attention to the context of the essay – it isn’t an essay for a university degree in law. You don’t need to use specialised language to achieve your aim in IELTS. I would not recommend using such specialised language that a layperson would not understand. That isn’t an IELTS rule, it is just logical – use such language as is appropriate for the audience and the context.

There are no rules about this. Linking is about being logical. I personally use these linking words for within the paragraph to add more information. When starting a new body paragraph I tend to use something more flexible, such as “Another point to consider is ..” – basically indicating the start of a brand new point rather than additional information to an existing point.

Best using them within paragraphs. To each paragraph, try: Firstly, Another point, Finally. But to be honest, you can’t learn formulas like this for task 2. It all depends what your ideas are as to what linking words to use. You need to learn flexibility if you want a high score. Yes, you should use a good range of linking words in your essay.

“For one”, is informal and not suitable for IELTS essays. Be flexible with your use of linking devices but stick with formal ones.

That question usually comes from speaking part 1. In part 1, they are relatively short answers – not deep discussions. The examiner would interrupt this answer. Just be direct and then add a bit more for part 1: “I’d change the sanitary conditions because … ” – then add one of two more sentences. Be chatty, not formal. You really need to start paying attention to what each part of the speaking test is like. There’s no point developing answers that aren’t appropriate to the section of the test. Your answer would be possible in part 3.

“On the other hand” is used to introduce an opposing view. “it is argued by some that” is used to express other people’s views.

It is not necessary to start a paragraph with a linking word. You are right. It needs to be less mechanical. You can actually start your body paragraph with any word you want. Just make sure it is coherent and cohesive.

The choice of linking words is not fixed. You use them flexibly, not in an automated way. There are many linking words you can use and also different methods of linking.

Linking words should not be repeated. You are being marked on your ability to use a range. However, words such as “and” or “but” are naturally going to be used a few times. Words such as “for example” can be paraphrased as “such as” or “namely” or “for instance”.

This means to use them like a machine. For example, always putting them at the start of a sentence or starting every sentence with a linking word. Be flexible.

Linking words are linking words – they do not need to be less common. Do not confuse vocabulary with linking words – they are part of different marking criterion.

No writing task 2 essay should have a sentence that starts with “But/And/Because”. You can use “However” instead of But.

It isn’t about being old fashioned at all. It’s about flexibility which is what the examiner is looking for. It’s fine to use them inside one paragraph to show support points. It isn’t flexible to use them at the start of each body paragraph – that is called being “mechanical”, which means using them like a machine – that is a characteristic of band 6 in Coherence and Cohesion.

Hi Liz, I hope, you are doing good. Actually, I appeared for ielts exam today but due to poor time management, I was not able to complete task 2 of writing. I wasted a lot of time on Task 1. I know, because of this, I would not be able to score 6 or more than that, as the task 2 holds more weightage. So, I have applied for the exam again. I have some concerns regarding writing section, I don’t know about the proper use of punctuation, especially commas. Also, sometime I write out of the context in essay writing. Please could you provide me some help with this. I would be really thankful.

The use of commas is simple. Just them to divide appropriate clauses. Punctuation is marked, but not at a high level. The main point is that commas are used in clauses, correctly and that full stops are used at the end of a sentence. Also that sentences are not too long. A very long sentence shows lack of punctuation because the person isn’t controlling the length of sentences. For ideas, it’s all about planning properly. See my advanced lessons: . Thank you so much for the response 🙂 So, is it okay, if we use short sentences instead of long? Using them won’t be a reason to deduct marks? And, what about the complex sentences? Would it be advisable to attempt task 2 first and then task 1, as it carries more weightage, because I always face the issue of time management but I am working on it.

A complex sentence does not need to be very long. It just needs to be a sentence which is not simple – this is a way the sentences are categorised for IELTS examiners, not for grammar books. Having short, simple sentences is not a good idea if you are aiming for a higher band score. You need to show control and a good range of sentence structures. I really appreciate the way you have described the small errors we all students keep on doing in daily essay writing. I have few questions in my mind, but without wasting your time I will put only one basic question that I am facing daily with the essay writing. I don’t understand your question. When you give your opinion, the whole essay will explain it. You will give an opinion based on the issue or issues given to you in the question.

I don’t recommend doing as you are planning. It makes it difficult to identify paragraphs and can be confusing for the reader. Just try to keep your handwriting as clear as possible so that the examiner can read it. Practice, practice and do more practice. Yes, you can ask for extra paper. Usually you just put your hand up and then explain you need more paper. But I have heard from one student that they wasted precious minutes waiting for the extra paper.

For example, this is mainly because of lack of physical activity and the poor quality of food. People are too busy. And in spite of economic growth, the quality of food has diminished.

Not in IELTS writing task 2. Never use “and, but, because” at the start of a sentence in writing task 2.

I am not clear why a sentence can not be started using “because”. Since we have mentioned both: subordinating clause and main clause, there should not be any issue to the examiner.

The words “because, and, but” should not be placed at the start of a sentence in formal writing. They come between clauses in formal writing.

It is normally best to take the test when you repeatedly get the score you want in practice tests. To improve English in just 20 days is a challenge. I can only suggest you decide what your main grammar problems are and deal with them one at a time. For vocabulary, review common topics for speaking ad writing – you can find word lists on google.

You can use those phrases if they help you explain your ideas but they won’t necessarily give you a higher score. In part 1, you must answer quickly and directly so don’t use them. In part 3, you might use them to explain your ideas. The most important thing is to speak naturally. All the best Liz

So is this written with or without a hyphen? For the second blank i heard “$45 in return” . so should i write down “$45 in” into the blank or just “$45” ? Thank you for your help.

One-way has a hyphen. For your second question, always look at the example they gave you. If the first one is “$30 one-way” then the second one must be “$45 return”. Always check the grammar. For note, form or table completion, grammar is rarely involved. All the best Liz

You put your opinion in the introduction, if the instructions ask for your opinion or for you to answer a direct question. If the instructions don’t ask for your opinion, don’t give it. Just be direct and don’t try to learn phrases – the examiner isn’t impressed by students who purposely learn phrases to boost their score and will not award points for it. You can use “In my opinion” or “I think” or “I agree” for task 2. You can also find a lesson on my task 2 page about how to give your opinion. For speaking, it is informal so you can use a range “I suppose”, ” I guess” or “I reckon” or “I think” etc. All the best Liz

Listening rarely changes with a remark because it is marked by right or wrong answers and mistakes almost never happen. For speaking, band score 6.5 means you make more than a few mistakes in your grammar and vocabulary or possibly that your fluency is strong enough to be able to talk at length without effort. It is possible to get a remark for speaking but looking at your writing, it is even lower. So, it doesn’t give confidence that your score will go up with a remark. The key to reading is to spend time understanding the language in the questions and thinking about paraphrasing before you try and find the answers. The more time you spend with the questions, the quicker it is to find answers. You should also be writing down a list of paraphrases from all reading exercises you do. Lastly, spend time planning a strategy for each question type and learning which questions have answers that come in order. Sorry but that is not the right way to approach IELTS. The examiner is trained to spot learned sentences and you will lose marks. The sentences you should aim for are based on grammar structures or tenses: clauses, conditionals, prefect tenses, gerunds etc. Just review your grammar structures. All the best Liz

IELTS Writing Task 2- What is the use of Connectors?

IELTS essay writing is one of the important and trickier tasks to be attempted. Out of the four parameters, two parameters of lexical resources and cohesion are fulfilled with the usage of best of vocabulary and linkage words. A proper structure of an essay is vital to procure an effective and worthy score. A variety of connectors and a hierarchical pattern of an essay makes it easier.

Yes students, in this particular article, connectors/ linking words to be used in Essay writing will be discussed.

What are the Linking Words?

Connectors, linking words, transition words are all synonyms of the word conjunction. However, in IELTS, conjunctions are those adverbs that are used to connect the two lines or ideas together but not used in between a line, like ‘and’ or ‘but'. These linking words basically provide linkage to the task. It makes your writing effective and puts it in structure.

Why should we use Connectors in IELTS Writing Task 2?

Putting linking words or connectors in an essay is a crucial exercise one should follow to do well in the parameter of lexical resources. It helps in forming a structured essay with a logical connection of ideas. With the use of linking words, students can display a greater knowledge and variety of vocabulary.

Here are some more reasons to use connectors:-

How to use Linking Words?

Students must understand one thing connectors in IELTS means connecting the ideas and these can’t be used everywhere in and after the line. Remember that connectors must come naturally while forming a text. Writing a connector for connecting ideas and paragraphs together is justified but using it after each line, makes it awkward.

Do not use connectors as conjunctions in between the lines. Use it after completing your one thought.

Remember that for every purpose there is a particular connector that, if used accurately can make your writing more effective and, if used wrong, changes the meaning of the sentence.

Linking words followed by a comma and remember to use it.

How many Linking Words should be used in IELTS writing Task 2?

There is no particular word limit for using connectors in an essay, however, it can be suggested that do not use many linkers. For paragraphs, two to three connectors can work well as these connectors will be used to connect the ideas in between. Using too many linkers would make the reader switch from one thought to another. As a result, the student can lose marks. If you read the above connectors separately, they may not have significant meaning. However, upon putting them into a text, a student can form a structured essay for a reader. Therefore, candidates must know IELTS essay linking words to score well in the parameter of lexical resources and cohesion.

Categories of connectors for IELTS Writing task 2

Categories of using the connectors in IELTS writing task 2 depends upon the pattern of writing an essay. An essay is formed by writing a good introduction, logical body paragraphs, and a conclusion at the end. So there are different connectors to be used for writing these three parts separately.


The introduction is structured upon three pillars that are a general or background statement, rephrasing the given topic’s statement, and your own opinion (thesis statement).

Body paragraph is the space where you can explain your ideas and your viewpoint. It is the place where more of the linking words are used.

It is important to be mentioned here that for diverse types of essay topics, there are different connectors. These are for writing in agreement or disagreement, writing advantages or disadvantages, writing causes and solutions etc.

Probing ahead, one of the main underlying reason stems from the fact is that___________________. Moving further, it is pertinent to mention that________________. Moreover, _________. Apart from the reason mentioned above, it can be clearly stated that why many are against/in favour of this trend.

In conclusion to the arguments aforementioned above, one can reach to a gist that the benefits/drawbacks of _______________ are indeed too great/dire to ignore.

In this type of question, a statement will be given and your opinion regarding your agreement or disagreement will be asked.

In this period of inflation/technology/modernity/ globalization, many people are_________________( rephrase the statement). __________ ( give one explanatory line). In my opinion, I strongly agree/disagree with this notion and my opinion will be discussed in further paragraphs with a suitable conclusion.

Supporting my agreement or disagreement to the given statement, I firmly believe that________________. To cite an example, ____________________________. Moreover/In addition/Furthermore_________________. Moreover/In addition/Furthermore_________________. For instance,_________

Explaining some of the another supporting points in favour/against this statement, it is true that________________. As a result/As a consequence __________________.

In conclusion, _____________( question rephrasal again). I believe that aforementioned points are strongly supporting my view point.

There is no denying fact that the phenomena of_________ is ubiquitous across the globe due to its importance. Majority of folks are in the favour of this statement due to its number of merits. However some of the people highlight its demerits first. In my further paragraphs, advantages and disadvantages of the same will be discussed.

Body paragraph 1 (advantages)

Initiating with the benefits of the same, the first and foremost key benefit is that______________. For example:- ______________________.Another benefit which can strike the minds of the people can be___________. To cite an example __________.

Body paragraph 2 (disadvantages)

On its darker side, some of the drawbacks which makes it problematic are, first ____________. Secondly,______________. Secondly,______________. For instance,__________. Last but not the least, ___________.

In conclusion to the above statement, neither its pros can be neglected nor its cons. It is a mixed bag of positives and negatives. In my opinion, the statement should not be underestimated.

Initiating with the points supporting first school of thought, firstly,_______________. The people who support this say that, (example)_____________. Secondly,_________________. In fact,__________________. As a consequence ,___________.

Although this has some benefits because it is very easy to do, I believe that it will not help you get a Band 7+ score and I will outline my reasons below.

The ‘template’ IELTS essay option (Band 6)

Here is what I see many teachers recommend as a ‘magic’ formula for writing the introduction:

1) Neutral background statement:

[Any topic] is a controversial issue. 

2) Paraphrase/rewrite the question.

[Some people think X while others think Y].

3) Say what the essay will do:

‘This essay will…’

While this ‘template’ is a useful guide for people who are just starting to develop their IELTS writing skills, it may not be the best option if you are aiming for a higher score (Band 7+).

The 3-sentence template introduction  is a clear and safe way to start an essay.

But it has some drawbacks .

Look at the question below.

‘Some people say that cars are the best way of travelling around cities while others think that bicycles are better’. Discuss both sides and give your opinion. 

Now look at a student’s response. Can you see what the problem is?

‘Cars and buses are  a topic of heated discussion. Some individuals argue that motor vehicles are the best way of getting around cities, but others believe that travelling by bus is better. This essay will discuss both sides and give my opinion.’

It simply repeats the question, uses mostly memorised language, tells the examiner what they already know and does not show the writer’s opinion.

It tells the examiner that you rely on templates because you don’t have enough of your own language.

Of course, if you then go on to write some excellent main body paragraphs, the introduction is not the most important part of the essay.

But the introduction IS important for making a good first impression.

The dangers of paraphrasing IELTS Task 2 essay introductions

Look at the student’s example below.  What is the problem here?

‘The optimum method of meandering in a metropolis is a debatable issue. Some people promote four-wheeled automobiles , but other people utilise two-wheelers . This essay will discuss both sides.’

The language here is very unnatural.

Synonyms are rarely exact synonyms , so if you simply replace words with similar words, your language will sound unnatural.

Paraphrasing is a skill which many high-level writers struggle with, even at University.

Unless you are very good at paraphrasing, I would not recommend this strategy.

Your job is to ANSWER the question , not to repeat it.

Examiners mark large quantities of the same essay – they do not need to read the question over and over again . They want to see what you can do with language.

How to write an IELTS Band 7 Task 2 Introduction

The best way to write an outstanding introduction is to address the question very specifically.

Look at the example below (in favour of cars ) – what do you notice?

‘Modern cities suffer from several problems related to car use, and recently many people have suggested that bicycles are a better option for travelling around congested town centres. However, getting around by bike has some drawbacks. This essay will argue that despite the many health and environmental benefits to cycling, cars are far more practical and convenient for most situations.’

This 3-sentence structure can be used to address any question, and it relates more closely to what you will argue in the main body paragraphs.

The example below shows how you can still use the 3-sentence structure to answer any question (this example is in favour of bicycles ).

Modern cities suffer from several problems related to car use, because many people choose cars over bicycles as the most practical and convenient means of transport. However, people are beginning to realise that bicycles are a far better option for travelling around congested town centres, for both environmental and financial reasons. This essay will argue that more should be done to encourage this positive development.

One problem I faced when a person said to me “You can find contradictions in both different dictionaries and English professors. That is why English is both an art and a science” This statement give me a scenario that show the unclearliness to evaluate which languages is formal or informal, OR which ones is suitable for IELTS Writing for IELTS Speaking. Can it suffer IELTS Candidate’s score in IELTS Speaking and Writing? * Further one I see is related to the usage of ‘proverbs’ and ‘rhetorical questions’ in IELTS Writing Task 1 (even in writing models of some IELTS real reliable expert and ex-examiner) Example to clarify my problem – First example with the usage of “Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life” – a proverb “However, the look of the building is also important because of the role of art in everyday life. Architecture is often considered one of the original and purest forms of artistic expression. I am reminded of a quote from Pablo Picasso who said ‘Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.’ Imagine a city filled with ugly, utilitarian structures like many Soviet-era buildings. These buildings will not lift people’s spirits or encourage them to contemplate the intended message. Contrast this with a city where architects have been given free rein to be artists. As long as the buildings are also functional, you will find a city filled with beauty and provocation that enhances life for its inhabitants. The outward appearance does not have to be beautiful, but it has a responsibility to contribute something to enrich the lives of everyday people.” (This text is derived from a sample answer of former examiner) – Second example with rhetorical questions “In some types of work, qualifications are less important. With manual jobs, such as cleaning and laboring, there is very little theoretical knowledge required. However, even in these jobs it is important for people to have a minimum level of education, especially if they want to rise above the lowest working level. How can a person without good writing and mathematical skills balance a budget, or deal with legal or safety issues? Therefore, qualifications matter even in more practical types of work.” (This text is from a model answer of an IELTS test writer) 2. IELTS Writing Task 2 is the second part of the writing test, where you are presented with a point of view, argument or problem and asked to write an essay in response. Your essay should be in a formal style, at least 250 words in length and you should aim to complete it in under 40 minutes.

It doesn’t matter if you’re new to IELTS or if you’ve failed the exam before – I’ve broken everything down into a simple 3-step process that anyone can use to improve their scores! Watch the video above to find out what they are.

5 Steps to a Band 7 in IELTS Writing Task 2

1. Understand the question.

You must understand the question before you attempt to answer it. This way, you’ll know exactly what the examiner is looking for. One of the biggest mistakes students make is not answering the question fully, which stops them from getting a score higher than a Band 5.

To analyse the question , you must first identify the question type, then identify the keywords in the question and finally identify the instructions words. This will help you understand exactly what the examiner wants you to do with the question.

2. Plan your answer.

The students who get the highest marks in Writing Task 2 always plan their answers for up to 10 minutes. Planning helps you organise your ideas and structure your essay before you write it, saving you time and helping you produce a clear and coherent essay.

3. Write an introduction.

The introduction should answer the question directly. This tells the examiner that you know what you are doing straight away and helps you write your main body paragraphs.

4. Write the main body paragraphs.

This is where you give the examiner more detail . You do this by stating your main points and supporting these with explanations and relevant examples.

5. Write a conclusion.

In your conclusion , you should provide a summary of what you already said in the rest of your essay.

4 Ways to Improve your Score in IELTS Writing Task 2

Many people know they need to improve their writing skills but don’t know how to do it. Here are 4 ways you can boost your score in Writing Task 2:

1. Understand the exam.

You must first understand what IELTS Writing Task 2 is, what you are expected to do and how to give the examiners what they want. This is the first stage and one that is often overlooked.

There are many online resources, often with conflicting and poor-quality information, so finding a reliable source of information is key.

2. Identify your weak areas.

If your car breaks down, you would try and identify which part caused the problem. If you get sick, your doctor will run tests to determine the exact cause of your symptoms.

IELTS Writing Task 2 is the same. We must first identify WHY you are not getting the score you need before we can help you improve.

However, be very careful! You wouldn’t ask the average man on the street for medical advice, so make sure you find someone who knows what they are doing and has the expertise to help you with this.

3. Fix the problems.

Now that we know what the problems are, we must fix them.

If your grammar needs work, fix those issues. If your vocabulary is lacking, work on fixing this issue.

Just as a good doctor can help you fix a medical problem, a good IELTS teacher can help you fix your specific issues.

4. Practice and get feedback.

Practice alone will not help you. It is an essential part of your preparation, but you must also get feedback on your work if you are really going to improve.

You wouldn’t try to teach yourself how to drive without an instructor, would you?

Find someone who will give you accurate and helpful feedback on your work. Otherwise, you will not be able to move to the last stage.

Now that you have understood what you need to do, identified the exact areas you need to work on, improved those areas, and received feedback on your work, you are now ready to get the IELTS Writing Task 2 score you deserve.

Do I need to plan my essay?

You must write at least 250 words in Writing Task 2.

I would suggest that you aim to write around 270-280 words in total. Aiming for 20-30 words more than the required amount makes you more likely to reach the word limit without setting an unrealistic goal.

Will I lose marks if I don't write enough words?

Yes, if you don't write the required number of words, you will lose marks in 'Task Achievement' for not answering the question fully. Read more here .
