Software industry has been rapidly growing from the last couple of decades. Due to this growth and advancement many issues are going to be occurred. There are number of factors that affect the whole software development process. This research has focused on the most important risk factors that affect the overall software project and risk mitigation reviewed from the literature and my own experience. The main aim of this research is to collect the most important risk factors and risk mitigation for the development of intelligent network using an Artificial Intelligence technique known as Rule Based System. This is helpful for the project managers to make decisions. For the accomplishment of this task Firstly an exploratory survey has been conducted to prioritize the twenty requirements and fifty software risk mitigation factors. A sample of 200 respondents is selected out of which 100 are the university students and 100 are the IT professionals of a well reputed software house. Secondly a Rule Based technique is used to generate the risk mitigation intelligent network. Rules have been stored in the form of risk mitigation in relationship with risk factors. The system follows five steps of execution. First of all risk factors has been prioritized based upon the associations of risk factors and risk mitigation. Secondly, it creates new relationships between them. Thirdly, enter these relationships asrules into the Knowledge Base or Rule Base. At the fourth stage, an RBS engine executes these rules and finally an intelligent risk mitigation network is generated.

Software projects' past goes back to four or more decades. We encounter the first software project risk management paper in 1991[1] and the study [2] reports that in 1995 US spent $250 billion to software projects and these projects had estimated $59 billion in cost overruns and another $81 billion had spent on canceled software projects.Although failures are tremendous, we have observed the project risks and critical success factors are given like shopping lists and so the remedies of risk factors. Very few studies exist for searching the relationships of these risk factors and the relationship between remedies and risk factors. We are trying to construct a simple model of risks and remedies borrowing concepts from systems and control theory.

Risk has been identified as one of the important factors that influences the success of Information Systems projects. Poor risk management could pose a threat to project performance and outcome. Many risk management models and standards have been developed to assist project managers and teams to overcome or minimize the impact of project risk. Despite continuous attention and emphasis on the positive contributions of risk management to a project, risk management practices are relatively lacking and it have not been practiced in its entirety. Hence, this study intended to identify the level of risk management practice and its influencing factors in IS projects. A case study was carried out by adopting the risk management maturity model to evaluate the level of risk management practices in IS projects. Factors that influence risk management practices in IS projects were identified and validated by experts. The findings can be used as a guideline for improving and enhancing implementation of risk management in project development.

The questions in this assignment are ALL related to the case study below. You need to image yourself as the Project Manager for the project discussed in the case study. Furthermore, you will not find the answers to most of the questions for this assignment in your Module Textbook. The questions are application based, which means we are assessing your understanding of the content in your Module Textbook. Finally, you are expected to use your imagination in answering these questions. If you have a problem with the project concept, then maybe speak to someone in your community who has been involved in a similar type of project. Case Study The community that you live in, is ideal for gardening. Life is good, with plenty of lush green vegetation and a clean stream flowing through the village all year through. This is the ideal climate to grow vegetables. The shops in the area do not sell vegetables, which mean the community does not have access to fresh healthy vegetables in their diet. There is also high unemployment in the village and surrounding areas. The community leaders heard that you have been involved in projects at your workplace. They want you to help the community in developing their own community gardens in strategic areas in the village. Surplus vegetables can be sold to purchase more plants, equipment etc. They approach you with a request to be the Project Manager for this project. The Module Textbook discusses the two phases in the project lifecycle, namely: Initiation phase and planning phase are discussed. You now need to apply what you have learnt from your Module Textbook to initiate and plan the project in the case study. 1. One of the components of the feasibility study in the initiation phase is to establish the client’s needs. In the process of establishing your client’s needs for the above-mentioned project, prepare a list of questions that you want to ask the elders to clarify in your mind the problem to be solved or the opportunities to be pursued. Use the information in the case study to guide you when preparing this list of questions. (5) 2. Referring to the information in the case study above, list three (3) possible benefits this project may have for the community. (3) 3. Provide two (2) other project options and alternatives that the community leaders may consider to address lack of nutritional food, unemployment and supplementing community income. (2) 4. The next step in the process is for the community leaders to specify the quality requirements. The community leaders must be encouraged to explain the requirements of this project in terms of performance, reliability and aesthetics of form. In your opinion, what are two (2) of the quality requirements for this project? (2) Project Management Assignment Guide 12 | P a g e 5. Referring to the case study above, what in your opinion is the purpose, goals and objectives of this specific project? a. Purpose (2) b. Goal(s) (2) c. Objective(s) (2) 6. The Module Textbook briefly highlights the purpose of a Project Sponsor in a project. In a paragraph explain the purpose of a Project Sponsor in a project. (2) 7. Referring to the project you are initiating and planning, who will be the Project Sponsor(s) for this project? (1) 8. The Module Textbook discusses the topic ‘managing of stakeholder’s expectations’. It further, discusses the fact that stakeholders have different contributions to make to the project and each in their own way will expect something out of the project. Required: Identify the stakeholders to your vegetable garden project. Copy the table below into your answer page and then complete the table with the stakeholders involved in the project, their individual roles (contributions) in the project and their expectations. (9) Stakeholders Contribution to project Expectations 9. The Module Textbook discusses constraints within the project. Referring to the examples of constraints in the Module Textbook and thinking of your vegetable garden project, list four (4) possible constraints within your project. (4) 10. Apart from the internal project constraints mentioned in question 9, the project may also be influenced by outside factors called constraints from the external environment. List four (4) more common external environmental constraints. (4) 11. Referring to the case study (vegetable garden project), who will provide the funding (money) for your project? (1) 12. Referring to the case study (vegetable garden project), who will make the financial decisions in the project? (1) 13. Referring to the case study, identify at least two (2) customer(s) of this project. (2) 14. Referring to the case study, name at least two (2) people and/or groups (beneficiaries) benefiting from your project. (2) 15. The Module Textbook discusses the project scope statement. According to the Module Textbook the Project Manager and Project Sponsor during the feasibility study will have built a structure for the project known as the Project Scope Statement. List the six (6) items of information that must be included in the Project Scope Statement. (6) Project Management Assignment Guide 13 | P a g e 16. Reflect to your answer questions 1-14, do you think you have adequately collected all the information that is contained in the Project Scope Statement? Give a reason(s) for your answer. 1. The first step in developing a risk management plan for your project, is to identify the risk. Risk identification involves thinking about what may go wrong in the vegetable garden project. Study the examples in Table 1.1 & Table 1.2 before attempting to answer this question. Required: Referring to the vegetable garden project. Identify the possible risks that can influence the success of the project. Copy the table below into your answer page, then complete the table with the risk identified, followed by the cause of the risk and the effect of this risk on the project. (Hint: refer to example in Table 1.2) (6) Effect on Project Probability in % Impact (1 – 10) 3. The Module Textbook briefly discusses how to deal with project risks when formulating a risk management plan. One of the topics discussed is the four categories of planned responses to project risks. List the four (4) categories of planned response. (4) 4. Referring to your answer in Question 1 (identified risk) and your answer to Question 3 (categories of planned response) answer the following question. Required: Copy the table below into your answer page, then complete the planned responses to each of the identified risks. (2) Risk identified Planned response 5. Define the term “project disaster”. (1) 6. The Module Textbook discusses the development of a disaster recovery plan for projects. List and explain each of the six (6) factors that might lead to a project disaster. (12) 7. The Module Textbook discusses the following two topics regarding quality in a project: (1) how to build quality into the project and (2) how to develop a project quality control plan. It is important to note that the quality control plan forms part of the project management plan. What is the purpose of the quality control plan in a project? (1) 9. In the real world many issues will arise that require management attention at various levels, to move the project to its desired objectives. It will be necessary to consider changes to various parts of the baseline plan in response to changes, quality non-conformances, task redefinition, risk events and/or budget cuts. To accommodate these changes there must be a process. Such a process is known as a change control process. Using paragraphs, describe each of the four (4) steps in this change control process. (11) 10. The Project Manager, with singular responsibility for executing the project, is the controller of project work and must have a management plan that allows him to monitor the project work and to control the project by making changes to the scope as required to meet the client’s objectives. List the four (4) project documents and/or activities that the Project Manager will monitor and control. (4) Project Management Assignment Guide 18 | P a g e 11. The Module Textbook discusses the role of reporting progress and issues to the stakeholders in project implementation. Name the five (5) factors that will influence the progress report frequency. (5) 12. The Module Textbook discusses the acceleration of a project when faced with deadlines. We all know that some project activities may be delayed, but it is the Project Manager’s responsibility to ensure that with these delays, deadlines are still met. Using paragraphs, discuss the possible options that a Project Manager has to accelerate a project when faced with deadlines. (7) 13. List the seven (7) reasons why a client might not accept the end result(s) of a project. (7) 14. In the final phase of a project called the close-out phase, one of the final responsibilities of the Project Manager is to compile and submit a close-out report to the Project Sponsor and Steering Committee. Identify the eight (8) different purposes of a close-out report. (8) 15. An important component of the close-out report is the section on “lessons learnt”. Study this section in the Module Textbook and thereafter answer this question referring back to the case study (vegetable garden project). Required: Write a paragraph on the lessons you, as a Project Manager in the vegetable garden project, learnt. (2) 16. The vegetable garden project in the case study is in its close-out phase. You, as the Project Manager for the vegetable garden project, need to write a close-out report for this project. Follow the guidelines provided below. Guidelines for writing the close-out report The close-out report must include the following information: • Project Name • Kick-off and Completion Dates • Project Leader’s Information • Team Members Names • Problem statement – who, what, where and why • Brief description of how the project was planned, executed and results • Provide any lesson learnt in the completion of this project that may be helpful to someone starting a similar project or a replicate of this project. • Are there opportunities to repeat this project in other communities? Could the results of this project help other areas of the community? The report must be approximately two pages long. When structuring the layout of the report, you need to ensure appropriate headings with well-structured sentences and paragraphs. Where required refer to your answers for the previous assignment. (11) Project Management Assignment Guide 19 | P a g e 17. The Module Textbook discusses the post auditing of projects. A post audit report on your vegetable project is being conducted. What results would you expect this report to include that proves that the project was a good one? Copy the table into your answer page, then complete it. (6) Post audit question What results do you expect will be found? Did we invest in a viable project? Was the project design appropriate? Did we solve the problem that was stated upfront? Did this project support our strategies and objectives? Does this project improve our financial performance? Does this project enhance our reputation? 19. If you knew what questions you would be asked by the auditors when you were just beginning the vegetable garden project, would you have conceptualised, planned and executed the project better in any way?
