Why Use Fluency Practice Passages
Fluency is a key foundational skill that helps students read complex text with greater understanding. When students read with accuracy and expression at an appropriate reading rate, their fluency supports their comprehension. Repeated reading practice with short passages improves word recognition and automaticity.
How to Use Fluency Practice Passages
Passages are provided from Levels F to Z. Some passages are original fiction or nonfiction text.
Passages are provided from Levels F to Z and are original fiction or nonfiction text that can be used for one-on-one reading, independent timed reading, or partner timed reading.
- One-on-One: Read the Fluency Assessment Passage to the student so she or he can hear fluent reading. Have the student read the passage. If the student gets stuck on a word, read the word and have her or him repeat it.
- Independent Timed Reading: Have a student start a stopwatch as she or he begins a passage, and stop it at the end of the passage. The student can record the words per minute and reading time on a chart or graph.
- Paired Readings: One partner times the other partner reading a passage. At the end of one minute, the partner with the timer says, "Stop" and circles the last word read. This partner then marks the number of words read on the table at the bottom of the page. After several readings the partners then switch roles.
You will need:
- Two copies of the assessment passageone for the student and one for the instructor
- Stopwatch or clock
- Clipboard (so students will not see what you are writing)
Administer a one-minute reading, starting the stopwatch when the student begins the first word of the passage (the student will not read titles). Tell the student that if she or he has trouble (struggling for more than 3 to 5 seconds), you will say the word so she or he can keep reading. After one minute, say "Stop," stop the stopwatch, and circle the last word read.
During the reading, resist the urge to correct mistakes. Mistakes and self-correction will be accounted for in the score. If the student has extreme difficulty, stop the test. Reassure the student that she or he will redo the assessment after further reading practice. You should select a lower level passage for the next assessment.
Follow along on your copy word by word with your pencil. Make a slash ( / ) through any words the student misses or cannot read without help. Mark a dash above words skipped. Errors include:
- Skipped words
- Mispronounced words
- Word substitutions, including incorrect forms of the word
- Words in the wrong order; both or all words are counted as wrong
- Struggling that lasts for 3 to 5 seconds, or more
The following are not considered misses:
- Added words
- Varying pronunciation due to accent, dialect, or speech impediment
- Repetitions in which the wording is correct
- Self-correcting a mistake; the word is scored as correct.
- Write the student's goal rate in the box provided.
- Count the total words the student reads in one minute using the words-per-line totals listed in the margin. This is the student's words-per-minute (WPM) rate. Write this in the chart at the bottom, along with the date of the reading.
- Count the number of errors (slashes). Record the number in the "Errors" line for the read.
- Subtract the number of errors from the total number of words read to find the words correct per minute (WCPM).
- Divide the words correct per minute (WCPM) by the words per minute (WPM) and multiply this result by 100. This is the student's Accuracy/Reading Rate percentage.
- Record this number in the box.
After about four to six readings, students should reach the target words correct-per-minute (WCPM) standard for their grade level with an Accuracy/Reading Rate of 90 to 95 percent.

Elena loves school, but she also loves to play with her little sister at home. She has never had a homework assignment before – until today. How will she cope? Students will read the passage and answer follow-up questions about on the story details and the plot.
Topic(s): Realistic Fiction. Skill(s): Summary, Story Elements. Genre(s): Prose

Elena loved school. She woke up early every morning and ate her breakfast quickly so she would never be late. Kindergarten was fun!
Elena also loved to play with her baby sister after school. Maria slept late because she was little, so Elena had to wait until the afternoon to see her. After school, Elena and Maria had a snack together. Then Elena would put on a puppet show for Maria. Sometimes they would look at books or play with blocks. If it was a sunny day, the two sisters would take a walk outside with Mami.
One day, Mr. Chang said to the class, “Today is a special day. We will have our first homework assignment.”
All of the students sat up. Elena raised her hand. “What is homework?”
“Homework is work that you do at home. I will give you a paper with questions on it, and you will write the answers at home. Bring it back tomorrow and we will talk about the right answers together,” answered Mr. Chang.
Elena took the paper. It had five math problems on it. It looked like the same numbers they were practicing in class, but Elena felt nervous. She had never had homework before. What if it took all day to finish, and she couldn’t play with Maria before bedtime?
When Elena got home, Mami saw that she was frowning. “What’s wrong, Elena?”
“I have homework. I don’t like it!” Elena cried.
“Let’s look at the problems together,” Mami said.
Elena took out her worksheet and a pencil. She answered the first two math problems quickly.
“That didn’t take too long,” Mami said. “I’ll bring you a snack while you finish the rest. Maria is still asleep, so you will be able to play together soon.”
Elena worked on her numbers. She used her fingers to count when the numbers got too big. Before she knew it, all the problems on the paper were done.
Mami brought Maria to the table for her snack. Elena was happy to be able to play. Her first homework was done, and she still had time to spend with her sister.
1. What do Elena and Maria do together after school?
2. What is Elena’s first homework assignment about?
3. At first, Elena doesn’t like her homework. Why doesn’t she like it?
4. Do you like homework? Why or why not?
The sisters eat snacks together. They also play with puppets and blocks, read books, and take walks with their mother.
Elena has math problems to complete.
Elena is worried that it will take too long to complete, and she won’t have time to play with her sister Maria.

How are Reading Comprehension Worksheets Helpful?
Learning to play the piano or ride a bike is a difficult task. Comprehending a text is no less challenging for numerous individuals. Support your pupils by providing them with a range of solutions to help with the assignment in order to make it achievable. This group of unit strategies works together to develop proficient readers who can form meaningful connections with texts. There are several ways for students to apply reading strategies, including reading comprehension guides, visual organizers, and creative expression.
In this article, we will provide you with information about an effective reading method – reading comprehension worksheets .
What is Reading Comprehension?
The capacity to comprehend spoken or written language is referred to as comprehension . The capacity to identify individual words is not the same thing. Reading without understanding the meaning of the words you read does not accomplish the objective or aim of reading, which is to increase one’s knowledge of the material being read.
Assuming, for instance, that a teacher hands a student some reading material to go through. The youngster is able to read the full chapter, but when asked to describe what was read, they have no idea what was being discussed. Reading material only becomes meaningful when it has been comprehended.
Reading comprehension is achieved when the words on the page represent more than just words but also concepts and thoughts. Reading becomes an activity that is not only educational but also pleasant when comprehension is achieved. It is necessary to have it in order to do well in school, on the job, and in life in general.
5-Step Reading Comprehension Strategies
To improve one’s level of understanding , one might use a variety of tactics. When using these tactics, having patience and a willingness to receive ongoing direction are required. When you are dealing with youngsters, it is important to remember to demonstrate how to use the method and to give guided practice. Reduce the amount of advice you provide gradually as their abilities improve. The end aim is for the youngsters to use the tactics without conscious thought.
The following are some methods that may be used to assist in the development of children’s reading comprehension:
In order to use this method, you will need to ask the children to make educated guesses based on what they learn from the tale or the text . In order to produce accurate predictions, you need to consult the opinions of youngsters on possible outcomes. The information that is seen, heard, or read in relation to the book’s cover, title, illustrations, drawing, table of contents, and headers is used as the basis for making predictions.
If a question like, “What do you believe this publication would be about?” is posed to you, what do you say? or “Now what you anticipate is going to take place if/when…” When replying, youngsters often make educated estimates or projections. Establishing a reason for reading as well as building interest and comprehension in the content is accomplished via prediction.
Through connecting, pondering, and modifying their predictions, this technique keeps youngsters actively involved in the learning process.
Analyzing Text Structure
For this, pupils must develop their ability to decipher or evaluate text structure . Students are instructed to recognize the structure that authors use to arrange their content. This might take the shape of a list, web, matrix, cause-and-effect pattern, issue pattern, or other descriptive patterns. Students are able to understand the data if they are aware of the manner in which it is provided.
Since each text structure is unique and requires time to understand, it is crucial to teach pupils all of its patterns. Additionally, subcategories, labeling, descriptions, charts, infographics, and other features that aid in better understanding the content should be provided to the pupils.
Making Connections to Previously Acquired Knowledge
To make links to one’s existing knowledge, one must first connect a new thought to experiences and information that one has already accumulated. It is necessary to engage the youngsters in making connections between their own lives and aspects of the tale. The purpose of this activity is to encourage students to make use of their existing knowledge in order to better comprehend the content that they read. Prior knowledge may consist of a person’s experiences as well as their familiarity with words, locations, creatures, or events.
For instance, the students are familiar with the term “bones” as a result of a prior conversation on bones that took place as a direct result of a fellow student’s broken arm. When they encounter a new word, like “skeleton,” their existing understanding of bones will be drawn upon to assist them in comprehending the meaning of the new term.
The first step in the process for children is drawing parallels between what they’ve read and their own lives (text-to-self). As kids become older, they begin to see similarities between the many books, texts, and concepts that they have encountered and begin to make connections between them. In other words, you should encourage children to establish connections between the text and themselves, other texts, and the world before, during, and after they read in order to improve their understanding.
To be more specific, before reading the material, having a conversation with the children about any new or challenging vocabulary terms might assist enhance their level of understanding. After that, students are able to draw upon their existing understanding of the new words while they are reading.
Visualizing
Reading comprehension may also be improved by using the approach of visualizing the material being read. It is necessary to stimulate children’s imaginations so that they can form a picture in their heads based on what they read in the text. Children are able to form mental images of what they are reading about.
Children are better able to comprehend the material they read, retain the specifics of what they experienced, and make meaningful inferences from the information they took in. For instance, you may have the students sketch something based on what they have read.
In addition, while you are reading a paragraph to youngsters, you should request that they shut their eyes and pay attention. Request that they visualize what the words are describing in the form of a movie in their head.
Summarizing
During the reading process, students are encouraged to locate the text’s overarching concept and then rephrase it in their own words as part of this particular tactic. The children are tasked with sifting through the data in order to evaluate which aspects of the material are significant and which are not. They extract the most vital information from the passage, restate it in their own terms, and do it while using as few words as is humanly possible.
This tactic should not be used only toward the conclusion of the narrative. Instead, kids should be taught to summarize what’s going on in the tale as it goes along.
How are Reading Comprehension Worksheets Helpful?

Oh, those loveable 6th graders! What would middle school be like with out them? Here are all of my reading worksheets that were written at the 6th grade level. I used this fantastic site to determine the readability scores of these worksheets, but you should read and approve them yourself before giving them to your students. Readability scores are not perfect and there are many different algorithms to determine readability scores. I use an average of these scores, but they can vary wildly. For these reasons, I encourage you to open up the reading levels two grade levels in each direction. This will give you a good selection of texts that are appropriate for a 6th grade student to read.

i like this…..i think
omg who would read all of this dude
This is wonderful! Are these worksheets to be done before or after a lesson on the subject? Are they pre-tests? Do you present each lesson in the order they are listed here?
Use them as you feel that they will best assist you and your students in reaching your goals. This is kind of what I did when I was teaching: https://www.ereadingworksheets.com/e-reading-worksheets/reading-unit-and-lesson-plans-aligned-with-common-core-state-standards/

AN EXCELLENT WEBSITE
This is a great website for children to read and for teachers to provide. As a student it is recommended for students and teachers.
there should be only chose the answer not question answer but anyway it is a nice website i hope you will improve this thing and one last thing please give small comprehension or passage
Most teachers like it when students are required to explain their answers. It adds reflection and expression to the exercises. I do understand that when you are working on these by yourself, you may not be interested in answering short response questions. In that case, you can disable them on the screen where you enter your name. The option box is in the top right corner. Best wishes.
yes, i am with you i cannot study when i only go down with arrow i see the answer .
so please this app should respect our decisions
I’m confused as to what your decisions are and how I could improve my respect toward your decisions.
TOO GOOD! JUST LOVED IT! KEEP UP THE GOOD JOB!!!
These worksheets are the absolute best I have encountered thus far. Can you point me in the direction of some myth worksheets? Thanks.
Thank you for this resource. It is amazing and has proven to be invaluable. I appreciate your hard work and thoughtfulness. I have learnt so much from you as an educator and so have the children I work with. Thelma
Thank you for the kind words. They are inspiring. Best wishes!
Mr. Morton, could you check the answers for The Story of Keesh worksheet #’s 1 and 2? I believe the answers on the worksheet may be reversed, with the correct answer for 1 being “D”, and the correct answer for 2 being “A”. The electronic version provides different solutions than the worksheet answer key. Thanks in advance for reviewing, and great resource!
You are absolutely right. I have amended the key.
hi, there is a typo I think above in your entry paragraph: “What would middle school be like with out them?” I think without must be written as one word. otherwise your site is amazing!
I love this website. It is so helpful to me and to others. I love this website alot.

I don’t know why these aren’t available in pdf format. I can’t open the RTF files without some of the text missing or blocked out.
They are available as PDFs.

This website has been a wonderful resource! I am in my pre-student teaching phase and I have been tasked to work with a student that is three grades levels below in reading. Sometimes it is difficult to judge readability and this website has made it easy for me to select activities to support her goals. Thank you so much!
I’m so happy to hear it. Best wishes.
This is hands down the best resource of its kind on the internet (at least that I have come across… and I’m Google-happy). Thank you from the bottom of my heart. You saved me sooo much time and effort (and I still wouldn’t have been able to do it quite as well). Thank you, thank you and thank you for taking the time. I’m sure it was a labor of love.
You are so welcome. Come back again. I make a lot of updates. Thank you for taking the time to comment and for the kind words.
