If you moved to a business premises without agreeing a contract with a supplier, you might be on a deemed contract. These types of business energy contract are on average 80% more expensive than negotiated contracts, so you could make significant savings by running a business energy comparison and switching.

What's different about switching business energy?
If you’ve never switched business energy before, you might think it’s similar to switching your domestic energy – something many people do on a yearly basis to save money.
While there are some similarities, there are also some key differences:
1. You can’t compare and switch business energy online. While the whole domestic energy switching process can be done online on a site like Uswitch, it’s a slightly different process for businesses. Thankfully with Uswitchforbusiness you can start the process online and we’ll do all the hard work for you. Once you’ve submitted your information online, we’ll contact you to help you find the cheapest business electricity and gas for your needs.
2. Business energy contracts are longer. Household energy contracts tend to last for 12-18 months, while commercial energy contracts can last for up to five years. That means you can fix your business energy prices for longer and don’t have to shop around as regularly.
3. Business gas and electricity is separate. While many households use the same supplier for gas and electricity, there’s no such thing as a dual fuel tariff for commercial energy. We'll help you to compare business electric suppliers as well as gas suppliers.

They also gained more points for emitting less CO2 and offsetting their carbon emissions. Suppliers that do not publish the source of their renewable energy or state whether they source green gas received a score of ‘0’.
Complaints handling Scoring was based on Citizens Advice’s official records of the number of complaints made by all sized businesses about their energy suppliers in Q1 2021. The number of complaints each supplier received per 10,000 customers was compared to an averaged number received out of all suppliers listed – the industry average (135 per 10,000 customers). Energy consumption The amount of gas or electricity your business has used in a stated period.
Period of billing You will either be billed monthly or quarterly.
How do I know whether my business is an SME?
Small businesses are companies with 11 to 50 employees with a turnover of less than £8.5 million (€10 million) or a balance sheet of less than £8.5 million.
Medium-sized businesses have 51 to 250 employees and either a turnover of less than £42.5 million (€50 million) or a balance sheet of less than £36.6 million (€43 million).
Additionally, there are micro businesses which have no more than 10 employees and a turnover of less than £1.7 million (€2 million) or a balance sheet of less than £1.7million. Companies are also considered micro businesses if they use 100,000 kWh of electricity each year or less than 293,000 kWh of gas each year.
You don’t need to know how your company is categorised to get business energy quotes using a comparison tool such as ours. Simply enter a few details about your business, and you will be provided with quotes within seconds.
What about large businesses?
If you are a large business, you too can use a comparison tool such as ours to save money on your energy bills.
As large companies use the highest amounts of energy, half hourly settled meters are installed on their premises which can help inform suppliers exactly how energy is being used, at 30 minute intervals. This data can also inform potential new suppliers during the comparison process, to find you the best deals.
After entering your business’ details into the tool, you will be given an introductory call to explain the steps of a subsequent tender process, after which you will be offered the best bespoke business energy prices to choose from.
What’s the difference between a fixed and variable rate tariff?
Fixed and variable-rate tariffs are the two main types of energy tariff available. Here’s how they work:
Fixed tariffs On this type of tariff the price you pay per unit of gas or electricity will remain the same for the duration of your contract, typically working out cheaper than a variable rate tariff. However, do bear in mind that while the cost of a unit of energy will be fixed, your energy bills will still be determined by how much energy your business uses.
Variable rate tariffs This type of tariff is often more expensive as the cost of a unit of energy fluctuates in relation to wholesale market prices.
If prices fall, you could save more money than if you were on a fixed tariff, but if they rise you could find yourself paying out more for your energy.
Energy suppliers usually roll their customers onto this type of tariff once their fixed tariff comes to an end.
The best energy tariff for one business will not necessarily suit another, so it’s useful to make a list of your requirements and considerations before starting to compare quotes. Aside from whether the tariff is fixed or variable rate, these could include:
Contract length Typically, fixed contract lengths range from one to five years. Keep the end date in mind, as you will need to switch to a better deal or risk automatically being rolled onto a more expensive tariff. Note that if you are a microbusiness, your supplier has to notify you when the date is approaching.
Economy tariffs Depending on when your business most uses energy, you may want to consider tariffs that offer lower rates during certain times of day, or on specific days of the week.
No standing charge tariffs You will not pay a fixed daily fee for your energy, leaving you only with a charge for your energy usage. While businesses that operate part-time hours, for example, can benefit from this tariff, it’s worth noting that the unit prices can be higher than tariffs with a standing charge.
Direct debit discount Look out for concessions for paying your energy bills by direct debit, to save more money.
Ensuring your business implements sustainable practices is important to business owners and customers alike, as the UK aims for net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
This extends to the energy you use. Choosing a truly green (renewable) business energy tariff will ensure that your supplier will feed more renewable energy into the National Grid, boosting the overall amount shared between everyone, as a minimum.
Beware of companies unduly exaggerating their green credentials. This is called ‘greenwashing’. We analysed the authenticity of each supplier’s green credentials for you, when compiling our above list.
You can also take your business energy supply into your own hands by generating your own renewable energy .
Switching energy supplier for a better deal is one of the best ways to cut your energy costs.
You should also consider:
Installing a smart meter The government is currently working with energy companies to roll out smart meters to households and small businesses across the UK. This new generation of meter eliminates the need for meter readings, by regularly sending your supplier information about your energy usage. You will also be able to keep track of the energy your business is using in real-time, via a display, allowing you to easily see where you can save energy.
Using cheaper alternatives Choose gas heating over electric heating, for example.
Picking energy-efficient options This includes using LED lights or motion-activated lights over normal lighting.
To find the best energy quotes for your business in seconds, use a comparison tool such as ours. You will need to:
- Enter your business’ postcode
- Choose whether you are looking for electric or gas deals
- Verify that the tool can check your current supplier and usage or enter manually
- Provide your name and contact details
Results will appear on screen. Confirm your supplier and simply wait for your energy switch to be completed within 21 days.

How do I switch my business energy suppliers?
You should consider switching your business gas and electricity suppliers when your current contracts are approaching their end dates. Ideally, you should give yourself a month to check whether there is a cheaper deal available – something you can do by using our comparison service.
You’ll need to give your current supplier notice, and they will ask you for a final meter reading. Your new supplier should take care of all the admin associated with the switch itself. There should be no need for physical work at your premises as you’ll get the same power through the same pipes and wires. The only exception to this is if you get a smart meter fitted as part of the switch.
How can I cut my business energy bills?
Switching to cheaper tariffs is the quickest way to save on your energy bills – but you can also save money by reducing the amount of energy you use across your business. Simple measures such as improving insulation and stopping draughts can maintain ambient temperatures, while fitting movement-sensitive lighting controls can cut electricity consumption.
You can also check any machinery or equipment is powered down while not in use, and that your equipment is working efficiently. You may also be able to take advantage of time-of-use tariffs, which offer cheaper power if you are able to operate in the evenings, overnight and/or at the weekend.
What is the Climate Change Levy on business energy bills?
The Climate Change Levy is added to business energy bills and collected by the government as an environmental tax. It is intended to encourage businesses to become more energy efficient.
You can reduce the amount you pay by signing a Climate Change Agreement which provides discounts of up to 90% on the levy paid on electricity bills and a 65% reduction on other fuels such as gas and coal. You’ll need to improve your firm’s energy efficiency and reduce your average energy consumption.
Does my business need an Energy Performance Certificate?
Most commercial premises must have an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC), although there are exceptions (for example, listed buildings, temporary accommodation and premises below a certain size may be exempt). You, as the owner or landlord, are required to show the EPC to prospective buyers and tenants so they can get an idea of how much it will cost to heat and light the premises, and what the carbon emissions will be.
You can only get an EPC from an approved commercial energy assessor . The EPC will give the premises an energy efficiency rating from A (high) to G (poor). It will also contain suggestions on how efficiency could be improved.
What happens if I move my business premises?
If you move premises, it is important to tell your gas and electricity suppliers well in advance. They may offer to ‘port’ your contract to the new location, or they may require you to terminate the existing arrangements and start afresh at the new premises.
This would be a good opportunity to check whether there are cheaper tariffs available on the market by running a comparison using our switching service. If you decide to terminate your existing contracts and move to a new supplier, you may be charged a termination fee by your old supplier. However, the savings you make by moving to the cheaper deal may offset this cost.

- Smart meters - installing a smart meter doesn't necessarily save you money, but it does ensure you're paying the right amount for your business electricity. Suppliers will used estimates if you do not have time to submit regular meter readings and this may mean you're being overcharged.
Should I Choose a Higher Unit Rate or Standing Charge?
Whilst a no standing charge tariff may seem attractive, the losses made on this are usually made up by increasing the unit rate charge. This means you may actually be paying more for your business electricity supply without realising.
This allows the business electricity supplier to be seen as a much cheaper option for energy. You should compare overall prices based on your usage habits before you even compare business electricity prices.

What are the different business electricity tariff types?
There is no shortage of tariffs when you compare business electricity prices. However, not all options are suitable for your business and each tariff has its own benefits. Here are some key differences you should understand and it may help you reduce your business electricity bills:
Fixed-rate tariffs
Most businesses choose a fixed-rate electricity tariff. They are great to locking in a price and means you know how much you will be paying each month for your business electricity.
Locking in cheaper business electricity prices for several years can offer companies valuable savings and is great for maintaining control of bills and budgeting.
Variable-rate tariffs
Businesses who do not want to be locked-in to a long contract due to higher than usually business electricity rates may select this tariff.
Businesses on this tariff will pay the suppliers standard rate, which can change each month.
Businesses who are scheduled to switch business electricity supplier during a time of high marker prices may choose a variable tariff until prices come back down. Variable rate contracts can be cancelled with just 30 days' notice.
Green energy tariffs
Green tariffs are becoming a much more competitive option when companies compare business electricity suppliers. With more pressure being placed on organisations to reduce their carbon footprint, selecting a green energy tariff is a great first step.
When you compare business electricity prices from a 'green' supplier or tariff doesn't mean you'll be paying more than others and can be a great option if you’re increasing your Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts.

Business Electricity FAQs
What affects my business electricity price per kwh.
Business electricity prices per kWh can vary depending on a range of factors. Businesses can pay different rates depending on how they use electricity.
Your business electricity prices can depend on:
- The type of business you run.
- The size of your business.
- Your average annual electricity consumption.
- The location of your business.
- The length of your business electricity contract.
- The type of tariff you choose.
The current wholesale costs of electricity can also affect your business electricity prices. The wholesale cost is the price your supplier pays for the energy it supplies to your business. This can rise and fall depending on demand, political events, and many other factors.
What are my business electricity tariff options?
The two main tariff options offered by suppliers are fixed rate and variable rate tariffs. With a fixed rate tariff, you will pay the same cost per kWh price throughout your contract. Variable tariffs can rise and fall depending on electricity costs at the time.
What if my business has more than one location?
Businesses with multiple locations can switch to a multi-site tariff. Multi-site electricity tariffs allow your business to have one contract for various locations. This can help you manage your energy contracts across your business.
You can even access cheaper business electricity prices due to your greater buying power.
Should I switch to a no standing charge electricity tariff?
A no standing charge business electricity tariff can be beneficial infrequent energy usage.
If you run a business which is only open on weekends or operates seasonally, a no standing charge could help lower our bills.
Most business electricity contracts come with a set daily fee. This covers the cost of your supplying electricity to your premises. This is charged no matter how much energy you use that day.
With a no standing charge tariff, you won’t be required to pay this fee. This means you will only pay for the electricity you use. However, your price per kWh can be higher with a no standing charge tariff. If you are regular energy user, you may end up facing higher costs with a no standing charge tariff.
Should I choose a multi rate electricity deal?
Multi-rate electricity tariffs allow you to pay one rate during peak hours and a cheaper rate during off-peak hours.
These tariffs can be a great option for businesses which usually operate or use energy at night. Electricity prices per kWh will often be higher than a standard tariff during peak hours. However, your unit rate will be cheaper in off-peak hours.
The most common multi-rate options are Economy 7 and Economy 10 tariffs. These tariffs provide 7 and 10 hours of off-peak rates respectively.
How long does it take to switch my business electricity supplier?
The process of switching your business electricity suppliers can take between 4-6 weeks.
Switching with Business Energy is easy. Our experts will keep you up to date with the progress of your switch and answer any questions you may have.
Will my electricity supply be cut off when switching?
No, you won’t lose your business electricity supply during the switch. We will liaise with your new and old supplier to ensure your switch can take place seamlessly.
Does my business need a half hourly meter?
As the name suggests, a half hourly meter sends updated readings to your supplier automatically every half hour.
This means a business can receive accurate and up-to-date energy bills without taking or submitting readings manually. Large businesses with high energy usage such as factories, warehousing our large offices are the main workplaces that could benefit from a half hourly meter.
If your business has a maximum demand of 100kW or greater in any half hour period during the day, you will be required by law to use half hourly metering. You can find out more about half hourly meters here.

How much does business electricity cost?
Business Electricity FAQs

Just like with your domestic energy, switching your business electricity supplier can potentially save your organisation money. And it is essentially a must for you ‘to do list’ if you have just moved into new business premises. This is because you will have been put on an expensive deemed rate that you have had no say in selecting.
Beyond the cost of the contract, switching business electricity suppliers can also help make your business greener, depending on the tariff you choose.
However, if you have never switched business electricity suppliers before, it can be overwhelming.
Our guide to business electricity below will tell you everything you need to know about comparing and switching suppliers.
How much could I save by switching?
How much money you save by switching business electricity suppliers will, in part, be determined by:
- the cost of your original tariff, versus the deals currently available
- the size, and energy usage, of your business
- the length of contract you choose to sign
- what type of tariff you choose
- what type of energy you buy, i.e. whether it is renewable or not
Types of business electricity tariffs
Fixed rates.
This is where your contract will state a fixed unit rate in kilowatts per hour for the length of your contract.
Flexible rate
Instead of a fixed unit rate, a flexible or variable tariff will see your rate rise and fall with market activity. This means your business would assume the risk of your unit rate rising, but also could benefit if it fell.
Fixed rate vs flexible rate
There are advantages and drawbacks to both fixed and flexible business energy tariffs. The main question is whether you are comfortable taking the risks associated with a flexible rate. While you could find yourself benefiting from falling energy prices, you could just as easily be left with no protection from rising wholesale costs.
Deemed rate
If you move into new business premises, you will be on what is called a ‘deemed’ contract. You will easily be able to switch suppliers as this contract doesn’t have an end date. Deemed rates tend to be among the more expensive business energy tariffs available.
Out-of-contract rate
If you don’t arrange a new tariff before the end of your contract, but have signalled you will not be renewing your current contract, you may be moved on to an out-of-contract tariff. If this happens, you will also be able to freely change suppliers, since your contract will no longer have an expiry date. You may, however, still need to give notice.
Rollover contract
If you do not renew or renegotiate your current contract, or fail to give your supplier notice that you will not be staying with them, you may be put on to a rollover contract. These are typically more expensive than a standard fixed or flexible tariff.
You should be aware that if you are a micro business, your rollover contract cannot last longer than 12 months.
How much electricity does a business use?
There will be huge variations in electricity usage between businesses, largely based on size and industry. An office, for example, has wildly different needs than a restaurant, and the same again when compared to a shop.
However, there is broad guidance for annual electricity usage in kilowatts per hour (kWh). As a benchmark, UK Power has the following figures:
- Micro business: 5,000-15,000
- Small business: 15,000-30,000
- Medium business: 30,000-50,000
Average business electricity rates
Many factors can have an impact on daily wholesale electricity prices, and therefore your business electricity quote – from the weather or supply and demand issues to fluctuations in currency.
These same factors will also inform the maintenance and network charges that come as part of your electricity bill.
How much one kWh costs will depend on the size of your business when it comes to annual electricity usage. The table below can act as guidance for when comparing quotes.
Average business electricity prices per kWh (including CCL)
Sources: Price per kWh based on BEIS Q2 2022 figures. Annual usage based on Business Energy and UK Power.
Which businesses use the most electricity?
According to the figures published by the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS), this is how total electricity demand in the UK in 2021 was split by usage:

One way to see if you can secure a cheaper business electricity rate is by thoroughly comparing suppliers when you are nearing the end of your contract.
To help make this a bit easier for you, you can compare business electricity prices in less than 60 seconds using our handy tool.
First, you need to enter the postcode of your business. Then you will be asked to supply your business name, the name of your current supplier, and your current electricity usage.
Click ‘See Results’, and you will be shown the quotes on offer to your business on a supplier-by-supplier basis. This includes how much money you could save by switching suppliers.
Although cheaper rates will be a high priority for every organisation, every business will want slightly different things from their electricity provider. When looking to switch business electricity supplier, you should also keep in mind:
- the unit rate and standing charge you are quoted
- whether you want a fixed or variable rate
- whether the energy comes from renewable sources
- the length of the proposed contract
- the notice period of the contract
- the cost of any additional charges, such as maintenance charges
- if you are using an energy broker, the broker’s fees
How to switch business electricity suppliers
To begin your application for business electricity, you will normally need to provide your business postcode, and energy usage for a certain period of time – over three or six months, or a year, for example.
Comparing the greatest number of suppliers possible will allow you to pick the best tariff for your business needs. And if you are using an energy broker – a third party that may be able to negotiate a better price for a fee – be sure to ask them which suppliers they represent.
If you are considering switching suppliers, regularly checking your electricity quotes and timing the change correctly will help you maximise the amount of money you can save.
For example, when comparing electricity quotes, a major factor to consider is the daily wholesale price of electricity. This is what business electricity tariffs are based on, and it frequently changes.
Who currently supplies my business electricity? You should be able to find the name of your business electricity supplier on your bill.
If you have just moved into a new business premises, you can try asking the landlord or previous tenant to find out who your supplier is.
If you still cannot find out who supplies your business electricity, you can use a service called the Energy Network Association search tool to find your provider.
When can I switch business electricity?
You likely won’t be able to switch your supplier until the end of your contract.
Once you have reached the end of your contract, you may also need to give your supplier notice. It is important to check your notice period ahead of time.
The exception is if you are on a deemed or out of contract rate. Then you are free to switch business electricity suppliers at any time. However, you should still check if you need to give notice.
What if I’m tied to an existing contract?
You will only be able to switch business electricity suppliers at the end of your existing contract. You will also likely need to let your existing provider know you intend to switch during the specified notice period.
What information do I need to switch suppliers?
When applying to switch electricity suppliers, you may need to provide:
- your business postcode
- the name of your current supplier
- the terms of your current contract
- your energy costs per unit and standing charges
- your annual energy usage
It can take around three weeks for your switch to be completed, but may take longer if there are any complications. You won’t suffer any disruption to your energy supply during this period.
Should I tell my current business electricity supplier that I’m switching?
You will need to inform your current business electricity supplier that you are intending to switch provider within the notice period stipulated by your existing contract.
Will my business electricity supply be disrupted during the switch?
Your business electricity supply will not be disrupted during the switching process. So don’t let this worry stop you from seeking out the best business electricity deal for your organisation.
Can I switch if I have more than one electricity meter in my premises?
You can still switch business electricity suppliers if you have more than one meter at your premises.
What should I do with my electricity supply if I’m moving premises?
When you are moving business premises, you will need to take the following steps:
- Notify your current energy supplier before you move.
- Take a meter reading on the day you move out of your current premises, and send it to your current supplier.
- Find out and contact the energy supplier at your new premises and supply them with the latest meter readings.
When you move premises you will automatically be put on a deemed contract. This means you are free to switch contracts to a potentially better tariff, as there is no fixed end date to the contract.
It is advisable to do so, as deemed contracts are among the most expensive tariffs around.
Can I get a business feed-in tariff if I have solar panels?
While the feed-in tariff (the original scheme designed to pay you for the electricity you produce) is no longer available, if your business uses commercial solar panels, you can still sell the excess electricity you generate back in Great Britain to the National Grid through the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) scheme.
Unfortunately, the Smart Export Guarantee scheme does not operate in Northern Ireland.

There are a few changes you could make to your business in order to reduce your electricity bill.
Become more energy efficient
One way to save money on electricity is to make your business more energy efficient. To help you do this, you could conduct a business energy audit .
The result of this audit could include turning off appliances when they are not in use, getting your employees on board to implement the changes you have identified, and checking your lighting to make sure it is energy-efficient.
Use a smart meter
Smart meters for businesses and domestic households automatically submit your energy readings for you. This not only saves you the time taken to manually submit a reading, but can also help ensure that your bills are more accurate, potentially saving your money in the long run.
Does my business need a half hourly meter?
It will only be possible to switch to a half hourly meter if your business has a maximum demand of 70 kilowatts or more in any half-hour period.
If your business has a demand for 100 kilowatts or more in any half-hour period, then it is a legal requirement to use a half-hourly meter.
Use energy from renewable sources
One way to reduce your business electricity bill is to generate your own energy using renewable sources, for example through commercial solar panels .
What is green electricity?
Many business electricity suppliers offer renewable or green tariffs. To check exactly how their energy is being generated, you can look at the supplier’s fuel mix. This is the percentage make-up of how their energy is generated and, due to the Electricity (Fuel Mix Disclosure) Regulations 2005, should be found somewhere on the supplier’s website.

The primary factor determining the price of business electricity is how much it costs to buy energy on the wholesale market. Wholesale prices change frequently, and are informed by everything from global demand, to the weather, to geopolitical issues such as international conflicts.
Cost breakdown
There are a number of different charges that will appear on your business electricity bill, contributing to its overall cost. These may include, but are not limited to:
Your unit rate is the amount you pay per kilowatt (kWh) hour of electricity. Typically, the more energy you are expected to use, the cheaper your unit rate will be. Your business location, and the length of your contract, can also have an impact on the cost of your rate.
Standing charge
Your standing charge is the daily rate you pay for energy to be supplied to your business, regardless of how much you use.
Climate Change Levy (CCL)
The Climate Change Levy is the government levy charged on the energy your business uses.
When it comes to business electricity, VAT is charged at 20% for most businesses, or 5% for those eligible for the reduced rate.

The cost of your business electricity bill will depend on a range of factors, including:
- which type of tariff you are on
- the unit rate cost per kWh
- the cost of your standing charge
- your usage, itself informed by business size and industry
What is a good business electricity rate?
Due to the vast differences between industries, there is no one ‘good’ business electricity rate, but rather only what is ‘good’ for your specific business.
There are two main factors to consider when trying to work out if a business electricity rate is ‘good’ for you:
- How does it compare to your current rate?
- How does it compare to what is being offered by other business electricity providers?
Depending on the length of your business electricity contract, the second question might be more important than the first. This is because wholesale energy costs can change dramatically, even in the space of 12 months.
Why is business electricity so expensive?
While the reason behind the increase in business electricity prices is down to rising wholesale costs, there are numerous factors behind the surge in those wholesale costs.
This includes pent-up demand released by the easing of Covid-19 restrictions, which followed greater energy usage during the cold winter of 2020/21. Most recently, the conflict in Ukraine has put further pressure on supplies, especially with Russia cutting supplies of the Nord Stream gas flow to Europe in July 2022.
These events have had the effect of pushing electricity prices higher, as the wholesale cost of electricity is linked to the price of gas.

Is business electricity cheaper or more expensive than domestic energy?
Although the electricity may come from the same source, and maybe the same supplier, there are a number of differences between domestic and commercial electricity.
The most important differences are:
- Business electricity tends to be cheaper per unit than domestic electricity.
- Business electricity contracts are normally longer than for domestic households.
- You cannot have a dual energy contract for business electricity and gas.
- VAT is charged at 20% for most businesses, and at 5% for domestic households.
- Broadly speaking, it is not possible to exit a business energy contract early.
- Business electricity is subject to the Climate Change Levy (CCL).
How much is business electricity per kWh?
As with your overall bill, the price of business electricity per kilowatt hour can vary greatly from organisation to organisation.
According to the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy, this was the average cost of electricity in pence, per kWh, including the Climate Change Levy, for Q2 2022:
- Micro business: 22.43p
- Small business: 21.04p
- Medium business: 18.47p
- Large business: 17.35p
- Very large business: 18.31p
- Extra large business: 17.75p
Are business electricity prices going up?
Just as domestic energy prices are expected to rise this year, business electricity costs are likely to further increase in 2022.
Cornwall Insight, an energy management consultancy firm, had previously stated that business energy costs could increase five-fold for companies renegotiating their contracts from October 2022 onwards. Forecasts such as this helped inform the Energy Bill Relief Scheme.
Are business electricity prices capped?
Normally, business electricity prices are not capped in the same way that domestic electricity prices are limited by the energy regulator, Ofgem.
However, due to the scale of the problem faced by businesses, on 21 September 2022, the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy announced plans to help cut non-domestic energy bills.
From 1 October 2022 to 31 March 2023, the government will implement a Supported Wholesale Price for non-domestic customers in Great Britain. This is £211 per megawatt hour (MWh) for electricity. A parallel scheme has been established in Northern Ireland, utilising the same support prices.
The level of price reduction will depend on your contract type:
- Fixed price contracts: in Great Britain, if you are on a fixed price contract signed on or after 1 April 2022, including those signed from 1 October 2022, your per unit energy costs will be automatically reduced to the level of your Supported Wholesale Price. In Northern Ireland, it will be applied if you signed a fixed-rate contract on or after 1 December 2021.
- Default, deemed or variable contracts: if you are on a default, deemed or variable contract, you will receive a discount on your per-unit energy costs. The maximum discount between wholesale prices and the Supported Wholesale Price is £345 MWh for electricity, subject to wholesale market developments. Your contract type means that, while your bill will be reduced overall, it is still subject to price changes.
- Flexible purchase contracts: since some of the largest customers are on flexible purchase contracts, the level of their reduction will be calculated by suppliers based on the terms of the contract, as well as the maximum discount of £345 per MWh.
The government will review this scheme three months after its launch, in order to both identify the most vulnerable industries in need, and decide what support will look like after March 2023.

How much would electricity cost for a small business?
Based on the Q2 2022 figures from the Department for Business, Energy & Industry Strategy, if a small business were to use 22,500 kWh in a year, it could be facing a bill of £4,734. This is before the standing charge and other fees are taken into consideration.
What about micro businesses?
When it comes to commercial electricity, you are classed as a micro business if you meet just one of the following criteria:
Your annual electricity usage is less than 100,000kWh. You have fewer than 10 employees, and your yearly turnover is less than €2 million.
Due to this second criteria, most small businesses in the UK would actually fall under the micro-business category.
It is important to work out whether you are classified as a micro business, as there are specific Ofgem rules in place to protect you when it comes to business energy contracts. These include:
- plain, easy-to-understand language in your contract
- greater transparency around the details of your contract, including brokerage costs and expiry dates
- a shortened notice period of 30 days
- a 14-day cooling-off period if you change your mind
- a renewal cap of 12 months if you let your contract rollover.
What about charities and non-profit organisations?
Charities and non-profit organisations are one form of business that may be eligible for the reduced VAT rate of 5%.
As a charity or non-profit, you also won’t be required to pay the Climate Change Levy (CCL).
What is VAT on business electricity?
The standard rate of VAT on business electricity is 20%. However, certain businesses are eligible for a reduced VAT rate of 5%. These include:
- charities and non-profit organisations
- mixed use business premises, where 60% of the energy usage is for domestic purposes
- businesses that use no more than 33 kWh a day (or 1000 kWh a month) of business electricity.
Can you claim the VAT back?
Most of the time, you won’t be able to claim VAT back on your business electricity, or gas, bills. However, you may be able to get a partial refund if you were paying 20% VAT while eligible for the reduced rate for your last four years’ worth of overpayments.
Your business electricity bill will vary based on your tariff and usage. For the first quarter of 2022, the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy published that the average price in pence per kilowatt hour (including the Climate Change Levy) was:
At these rates, if you were a small business using 22,500 kWh a year, you could potentially expect to pay £4,734. That number includes the CCL, but excludes other fees, such as the standing charge, that will comprise the rest of your bill.
If you are coming to the end of your contract, your business is moving premises, or you are on a deemed or default rate, one way to get a cheaper business electricity rate is by comparing providers, and then switching suppliers to a better deal if available.

Whilst it takes more time to switch in comparison to the domestic market, we take all the admin out of your hands. Here is a list of the UK’s cheapest business electricity suppliers:
Unit Rate vs Standing Charge
It's important to completely understand the prices and terms of your business electricity contract. What may seem like a cheaper deal, may actually work out more expensive.
For example, an electricity supplier may increase the standing charge to offset any losses from a cheaper unit rate. This allows the electricity supplier to be seen as a much cheaper option for energy. You should compare overall prices based on your usage habits before you decide to switch business electricity.
How To Compare Business Electricity Rates that are Competitive?
The market is ever-changing and it can be hard to predict how business electricity prices are going to change. Whilst the business switching process has its differences from domestic switching services, it works in a similar manner.
Whether you are moving, operating a change of tenancy, or renewing on reduced terms, your new plan can only start when your existing arrangement expires.
By following the best practice guidelines set out below, you will ensure you take advantage of the competitive nature of this industry and avoid potential pitfalls whilst you switch business electricity:
Avoid rollover contracts
If you receive a renewal notice from your current provider, do not accept the automatic extension offer. Commonly known as “rollover contracts” your new charges are typically 70%-100% higher than you’re currently paying.
Terminate your current agreement
It’s essential you formally terminate your current agreement by email or post before the date outlined in your terms and conditions. If you don’t, you’re unable to change to a new contract.
Shop around for the best deals
Use our business electricity comparison tools to research all available options open to you. Over 61% of companies elect rollover contracts each year and sacrifice combined potential savings of £1.8 billion .
Out of contract and deemed rates
Ensure you formally sign a new term otherwise; you will activate so-called “out of contract” rates. These charges are at least double what you are paying today and come into force when your contract expires.
Small Business Electricity Prices
Managing costs is an important part of operating a small business . There are also so advantages of operating a small business when it comes to managing electricity supply.
For example, if your business has less than 10 employees or a turnover of less than £1.8 million they are classed as a micro business .
Businesses falling into this bracket means they are protected by certain rules when it comes to contract renewals. Making it much easier to manage energy and switch business electricity suppliers.
This means that your current business electricity supplier must inform you when any business electricity contracts are coming to an end. Previously, suppliers would make it difficult to find out when your renewal is due in the hope that you will roll over onto an expensive standard variable tariff.
Businesses can also lock in prices during a renewal window which opens anywhere from 6-12 months.
What about Half Hourly Meters and Multi-Site Businesses?
If you are one of the 120,000 larger consumption organisations in the UK operating under a half-hourly metered provision, then specialist solutions are necessary to manage the negotiation and submission process.
This profile class requires your details to be directly submitted to suppliers in order to receive bespoke business electricity quotes and follow a prescribed tendering process.
Our dedicated brokering team has helped many hundreds of larger consumption customers to reduce their invoiced business electricity costs, and also improve efficiency through management software.
Multi-site operations are managed differently from individual quotes because of the volume of meters involved. We will gather your data and request a group procurement offer for all your sites.
What are the different business electricity tariff types ?
There is no shortage of tariff options for both SMEs and larger businesses looking to switch their business electricity. Each tariff type has its own benefits from locked-in prices, to low market flexibility and renewable sources.
Fixed-rate business electricity tariffs
A fixed-rate tariff is one of the more popular options and can be a great option if the market prices are low.
Locking in cheap business electricity for several years can offer companies valuable savings and is great for maintaining control of bills and budgeting. Fixed-rate tariffs protect businesses from electricity price increases for the period of their contract.
Variable-rate business electricity tariffs
Depending on the circumstances of the business, variable-rate tariffs offer great flexibility when it comes to the amount they pay from month to month. Businesses will pay the supplier's standard rate on a variable tariff, which can change each month.
This is especially great if the current business electricity rates are high, and businesses do not want to commit long-term as these contracts can be cancelled with 30 days’ notice.
Green business electricity tariffs
With more pressure being placed on businesses to reduce their carbon footprint, many organisations are switching to sustainable electricity sources.
When you compare business electricity from a 'green' supplier or tariff doesn't mean you'll be paying more than others and can be a great option if you’re increasing your Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts.
Regional Business Electricity Costs
Providers can charge different rates depending on where your business premises are located. This is because of transmission costs, power plant location and UK demand. The infrastructure of where your business premises is located can have a big impact on your electricity costs.
Usually larger consumption businesses will not be affected as much and have access to the best business electricity rates due to the buying power they have. Whilst this is mostly a true statement, some regions have larger differences that apply no matter how large a business's electricity consumption is.
As an example, electricity bills tend to be much higher in North Wales, Mersey and Cheshire in comparison to London.
Understanding your Business Electricity Bill
Whilst electricity bills are easy to understand and are universal across different providers, there are a few differences between domestic and business electricity contracts. These include:
- Contract length - Business electricity contracts are usually longer than domestic electricity. Businesses can be locked into fixed-rate deals for up to 5 years. Domestic contracts usually only last for up to 2 years.
- Pricing deals - Electricity providers can be more flexible with business electricity prices and the wholesale market plays a much larger role in deciding these prices. Due to the amount of electricity generally used by businesses, most suppliers purchase that electricity once a contract has been agreed upon. Domestic electricity is usually purchased months in advance.
- Contract terms - A new business electricity contract is legally binding. Once it has been signed it is extremely expensive and difficult to change your supply. This is why it is important for businesses to understand the terms of the new contract before signing. Domestic customers can cancel their contract at any time by paying an exit fee.

Business Electricity Rates FAQs
How much can i save by switching electricity suppliers.
If your business has never switched, or it’s been a few years since you switched, you are likely to have allowed automatic increases to roll into your contracts.
This will mean that you will be paying much more than you need to for your business electricity.
Even if you only failed to change tariffs last year, you may save this time around by comparing business electricity prices.
Can I switch to a no standing charge tariff?
Most business electricity contracts will come with a daily standing charge which remains the same no matter how much electricity you have used that day.
However, many providers will not offer an electricity tariff with a zero standing charge with a competitive kWh cost.
No standing charge tariffs can benefit businesses which operate seasonally and those that open just a few days a week.
What is a typical price per unit of electricity?
The average business electricity unit price in 2023 is 49.88 pence per kWh.
The average price for small businesses is 49.27 pence per kWh with large businesses currently charged an average of 50.70 pence per kWh.
These prices are based on example rates of business electricity tariffs 2 year fixed rate tariff in 2023. For the most accurate rates, compare business electricity prices today .
What are deemed contract rates?
A deemed rate is a special tariff for companies that have either recently moved into new premises or cancelled a contract without setting up a new one.
There is no formal contract in place, and you can move suppliers at any time.
If your business electricity is on deemed contract rates, we would recommend comparing electricity suppliers as soon as possible.
Is business electricity cheaper than domestic?
Business electricity prices tend to be cheaper than domestic. This is because providers usually only buy your supply of electricity once the new contract has been agreed upon. This means that if the company agrees to a 4-year contract, the supplier will purchase the electricity to cover the full contracted period at the best business electricity rates available. These prices are usually in line with the wholesale market.

How Much Do Small Businesses Spend On Electricity? Prices & Bills Compared
The pricing information above shows how much businesses of various sizes pay per unit of electricity but doesn’t show how much the average small business actually spends.
Ofgem’s most recent Micro and Small Business Engagement Survey revealed some interesting information about how much small businesses (defined by Ofgem as having 50 or fewer employees) paid for their electricity per year.
- 10% paid less than £500 per year for electricity.
- 18% paid between £500 and £1,000
- 23% paid between £1,001 and £2,500
- 14% paid between £2,501 and £5,000
- 3% paid between £5,001 and £6,400
- 6% paid between £6,401 and £10,000
- 5% paid between £10,001 and £15,000
- 4% paid between £15,001 and £25,000
- 2% paid between £25,001 and £50,000
- 1% paid more than £50,000
- 14% didn’t know how much they spent.
Small Business vs Micro Business Electricity Prices
According to Ofgem , a non-domestic consumer is defined as a micro business if they meet one of the following criteria:
- employs fewer than 10 employees (or their full-time equivalent) and has an annual turnover or balance sheet no greater than €2 million; or
- uses no more than 100,000 kWh of electricity per year; or
- uses no more than 293,000 kWh of gas per year.
The main benefit of being defined as a micro business rather than a small business is that you can give a termination notice at any time during your contract which means you can always shop for the best deal.
Unit Cost vs Standing Charge
Business electricity prices are made up of two things: the unit price and the standing charge. It’s important to understand the difference when comparing suppliers.
Unit Price: This is how much you pay for the electricity you use. It is charged in terms of pence per kWh . It is a variable charge, so the more you use, the more you pay. To get an idea of how much you should be paying, please see the tables at the top of this article.
Standing Charge: The standing charge is a fixed cost. Normally it’s charged as a fixed price per day (although sometimes per month or quarter). The difference with the unit price is that you pay the same amount regardless of how much or little electricity you use.
And unlike unit prices, standing charges vary widely from supplier to supplier sometimes as low as 20p per day all the way up to £22+ per day .
Generally speaking, most price comparisons should focus on the unit price rather than the standing charge as this will determine the bulk of what you’ll pay. However, if you do see an abnormally low unit rate it’s worth your while to double-check the standing charge.
Business Electricity Prices By UK Region
Here’s a breakdown of average business electricity prices by region as a guide. This is based on 25,000 kWh of usage on prices in January 2023.
As you can see even deemed rates can vary by up to 30% within a supplier depending on the region. Once again this shows the importance of making a comparison. It only takes minutes to compare business electricity prices and it could be the difference in saving hundreds of pounds each year.

Tariffs For Different Electricity Meters
Broadly speaking there are two main types of business electricity meters.
Many businesses are using standard meters and larger businesses are using half-hourly meters. You can tell what type of meter you’re on based on your MPAN (Meter Point Administration Number). This number can be found on a recent business energy bill or on your actual meter box.
- If your supply number starts with a 00 you have a Half Hourly meter.
- If your supply number starts with 03 you have Standard Meter.
- If your supply number starts with 04 you have an Economy 7-meter
- If your supply number starts with 05-08 you are Maximum Demand (MD) customer
P272 was implemented on 1 April 2017 which means all 05-08 customers are now billed on a Half Hourly basis.
Knowing what your meter type is made comparing electricity prices much easier as not all suppliers are set up to handle Half Hourly customers. Some niche suppliers only deal with Half Hourly customers and won’t deal with SMEs on 03-04 profile classes. You will need to be aware of this when you switch business electricity supplier.
Despite a push by suppliers to get all customers on smart meters, many smaller suppliers are still not set up to deal with smart meters. If you would like to remain on a smart meter, you should check that your new supplier supports them before you switch business electricity.
Deemed & Out-of-Contract Electricity Rates Explained
Unlike domestic electricity, there are no price caps on business customers. This makes it vital to always have a business electricity contract in place. Normally, the supplier will just roll you over onto a new contract when your old one ends, unless you take action.
While often poor value, these can still sometimes be better than paying deemed or out-of-contract rates.
Deemed rates: are what businesses taking over new premises will pay until they enter into an electricity supply contract. The amount is paid to the existing energy supplier of the premises until a contract can be arranged with them or another supplier.
The prices are very high but are never meant to be paid for long. Just be aware the deemed unit prices can easily be 150% more than in-contract rates, so there’s a big incentive to switch quickly.
Out-of-contract rates: The amount charged is usually very similar to deemed rates but usually arises when a contract ends and a new contract has not been put in place. The problem with out-of-contract rates is that you may not realise you’re on them unless you’re checking your bill regularly.
Once again if you find yourself paying out-of-contract rates, you should either contact your supplier to be placed under contract or better yet compare prices to get a much better deal. You can sometimes save up to 60% off the rates you’re paying.
Business Electricity Comparison: Fixed vs Variable
There are two types of business electricity contracts. Some suppliers offer more complex blended contracts, but all of them will basically consist of either fixed or variable elements.
Here are the key things you need to know about both types:
Fixed Tariff Business Electricity Contracts:
- Can be for as long as 5 years, although 1-3 years remains the norm
- Usually fixes your unit price per kWh and standing charge for the duration of the contract (but usually does not fix CCL charge)
- The price you pay per unit generally increases with contract length because of the risk of price increases
- Fixed price often only applies to estimated usage, which means you could pay more if you start using more energy
- Very difficult to get out of the contract early
Variable Tariff Business Electricity Contracts:
- The price you pay varies based on wholesale electricity prices and can go up or down
- Cheaper than deemed or out-of-contract rates
- Not usually locked into a long-term contract, so can switch suppliers at anytime
- Offers far less certainty than a fixed-term contract in terms of rates
- Prices can sometimes be higher than fixed-term contracts
Each contract has its benefits and is down to the individual circumstances of the business. Most businesses will choose a fixed contract when they switch business electricity as it tends to be much easier to manage in terms of expected cash flow.
Larger businesses can sometimes save money using variable rate contracts if they can manage their energy usage throughout the day, but this takes quite a bit of effort and should only really be considered if your business has a Half-Hourly meter installed.

What Is Included In Your Business Electricity Bill?: VAT, CCL, DUoS & TNUoS Charges
As you can see above, besides the wholesale price of electricity you also face a whole range of other costs here are a few of them explained:
- VAT: Most businesses will pay the standard VAT rate of 20% for their commercial electricity. However, if at least 60% of your business’ energy is used for domestic purposes, you are a charity or non-profit, and/or you use less than 33kWh of electricity per day (1,000kWh per month) you may be able to pay only 5%.
- CCL: From 1 April 2019 the Climate Change Levy is 0.847 p/kWh for electricity. Although if you generate electricity via renewable sources you may be able to a CCL Exemption.
- DUoS: Distribution Use of System charge covers the cost of maintaining the local electricity distribution network infrastructure including the cables, substations, poles, and transformers. It varies based on usage and should be clearly shown on your bill.
- TNUoS: The Transmission Network Use of System charge pays for the cost of maintaining the electricity transmission network in England, Wales, Scotland, and offshore and prices are based on usage and time of year.
Who is the cheapest business electricity supplier?
With business electricity comparison, you may just be looking for the cheapest supplier. The unfortunate truth is that this no single “cheapest” supplier. This changes daily. The best way to find cheap deals is to compare business electricity prices when you’re ready to switch.
Prices vary for all sorts of reasons from location to size, to type to credit score to usage and many more reasons. Therefore, the cheapest supplier for one business might not be the cheapest for another.
How to get cheaper commercial electricity rates
Getting the lowest tariff on business electricity is not the easiest thing in the world but the following 10 tips can hopefully help:
- Using a comparison service to view the latest business electricity rates is the quickest and easiest way to find great deals.
- Know how much electricity you use each year as this makes comparisons easier and may make it easier to negotiate a discount.
- Have your MPAN (Meter Point Administration Number) ready as this can also help you make a better comparison.
- Consider how you pay your bill. For example, suppliers like EON and EDF will offer up to a 7% discount if you pay by monthly direct debit.
- Check your company credit rating. Bad credit can mean you’ll pay more for your business energy.
- Look into when you use your electricity. For example, if you run a late-night business you may be able to benefit from off-peak rates for your electricity.
- Look into installing renewable energy options such as solar panels or wind turbines. While not an option for many businesses, you may be able to benefit from various government schemes. Moreover, you may be able to offset future price increases.
- If you have multiple business locations you may be able to negotiate a lower unit price by buying in bulk.
- Look at ways to lower your overall electricity usage such as using LED light bulbs or more energy-efficient appliances. This can significantly reduce your total bills going forward.
- Energy suppliers don’t offer dual fuel contracts or discounts like they do for domestic customers. This means you may find it cheaper to buy your electricity and gas from separate suppliers.

Business Electricity Comparison – Your Current Contract
First things first grab a bill, most of the information you’ll need will on the bill, including your current supplier, contract end date, current rates and consumption.
Are you in your renewal period?
Business electricity contracts are different to those available for your home. Depending on supplier contracts are available for between 1-5 years, sometimes longer, so you might already be in contract in which case you may need to wait until you are in your renewal period in order to look at new contract options and rates.
When does my renewal period start?
When completing your Business Electricity comparison, it’s important to be aware of the renewal period with your supplier. Most suppliers have a renewal period of 12 months before the end of your contract, within which you can secure a new contract with either your current or a new supplier.
It’s always advisable to complete your business electricity comparison as early as possible as wholesale prices are generally cheaper the further ahead you secure them. Leaving your contract until the last minute means you are exposed to any existing market conditions which normally result in higher prices. Not completing your business electricity comparison on time may also reduce the number of suppliers able to provide you with comparative prices or worse still mean you end up out of contract on out of contract rates.
Out of contract rates can be staggeringly high and your current supplier normally won’t allow you to secure a new contract with them or any other supplier until any debt with them has been cleared.
Change of Tenancy (COT)
If you have just moved in to a new premises its important to make sure you carry out a business electricity comparison as soon as possible taking a out a contract with your preferred supplier to avoid being on out of contract rates. In order to submit a change of tenancy you will normally be required to provide proof that you are responsible for the building.

Why switch business electricity with Uswitch for Business?
Switching to a better business energy deal isn’t quite as straightforward as arranging a new household energy tariff .
This is because commercial energy contracts are set up differently from domestic ones. For instance, rates and contract lengths will be different, there is no dual fuel option, and you won't be given a cooling-off period with a business energy contract. But you can lock in rates for longer and deals are tailored to meet your exact needs. It's all about working out what best suits your business.
There are also different rules in place for businesses of different sizes.
Suppose you run a larger company or your business has a high energy demand. In that case, you might have a half-hour meter installed or have multiple meters installed for more accurate readings. If you run a micro business , you can cancel your agreement and switch to a new one without having to wait for your current deal to end.
That's why it's important to get some expert help before you sign your next energy contract. To help you make the most of our business electricity price comparison service, and ensure you get the best available tariff, we’ve put together this guide covering everything you need to know about comparing and switching to a better deal.
What business electricity tariffs are available?
Business energy tariffs are designed to fit the needs and budget of each individual business. When you compare rates, suppliers only offer bespoke quotes based on an assessment of your business and its energy consumption.
This is because no two businesses have identical energy needs, regardless of how similar they are. And so no two business electricity contracts are exactly the same.
While a bespoke energy deal will benefit your business, it can present some problems when it comes to switching. With no 'out-of-the-box' tariffs available, the only way to make sure you’re on the best deal is to get a quote from each and every supplier. This can be both time-consuming and confusing, particularly if you want to compare a range of energy suppliers and have little or no guidance on what a good deal looks like.
That's why it makes sense to let the team at Uswitch for Business look after your energy comparison and handle the switch. One quick call is all it takes for our experts to run quotes on your behalf and offer advice on the best rates for your business.
Once you've chosen the deal you like best, we'll take care of the switch for you so you can get back to running your business.
But it never does any harm to do a little background research before you get in touch. To help you understand how your business energy tariff stacks up against other deals out there, here are the most common contracts offered to small and medium-sized businesses:
- Fixed tariff - A fixed business electricity tariff allows you to pre-agree unit rates with your supplier and pay these rates throughout the duration of the contract. These rates are usually competitive, but you should always run a business electricity comparison before agreeing to any deal. This is the only way to make sure you can’t get better rates elsewhere.
- Out-of-contract rates - If you let a fixed deal expire without arranging a new one, your supplier will place you on its out-of-contract rates. These are often more expensive than the rates you're offered on a fixed tariff, but you can switch at any time by giving just 28-days’ notice.
- Deemed rate tariff - Deemed rates are similar to out-of-contract rates, but are used by suppliers when a business moves into new premises without signing a new contract. These are more expensive than fixed rates, but you can switch by giving 28-days’ notice.
- Rolling Contract - A rolling contract ties you into a new, year-long contract at higher rates. You can sometimes negotiate a new contract on blend and extend terms, which allows you to agree to lower rates by signing up for a new long-term contract with your current supplier. These new rates are usually not as competitive as others you could find elsewhere on the market. Rolling contracts aren’t as common as they used to be, but you should always check the terms of any contract you sign and keep an eye on its end date.
There’s always a chance you can save money by switching suppliers, regardless of the type of tariff you're on. But instead of burdening yourself with the hassle of ringing around for dozens of quotes, let us find your next business electricity deal and take care of the switch for you. Call us today on 0800 188 4930 to speak with one of our team.
What costs make up your business electricity prices?
There are all sorts of costs that go into making up your business energy bill , but when shopping around for a new commercial electricity tariff, there are two costs you should pay particular attention to:
- Unit cost - The price you pay for each unit of electricity ( measured in kWh ) your business uses.
- Standing charge - A daily charge that covers the maintenance of the national grid, and the cost of transporting electricity directly to your business premises.
These are the two main charges that will make up your business’s electricity bill, and make the biggest difference to the price you pay each month.
Other charges that could be included on your bill are the Contracts for Difference charge, the Climate Change Levy, and VAT. This is charged at a standard rate of 20%, but a discounted rate of 5% is available in certain circumstances. For more information, check out our guide to VAT on business energy bills .
What are the latest business electricity rates?
When comparing business electricity prices, it's a good idea to try and find out how much energy businesses similar to yours are using and how much they're paying for it.
The trouble is that businesses are charged different rates depending upon their size, location, and a number of other factors. This makes it difficult to do an accurate comparison. And then there's the current market instability which is making cheap energy rates hard to find.
But to give you an idea of how much energy your business should be using and how much it should be paying for it, here are the latest average use and price figures for businesses of all sizes. These figures don't take into account the Energy Bill Relief Scheme.
Note: Bill size may vary according to your meter type and business location. Figures don't include the Energy Bill Relied Scheme discount. Current market volatility may also mean that the prices you’re quoted are different from the averages shown. The figures shown are the average unit rates and standing charges quoted by Bionic per business size from January 3 to January 6, 2023. Rates do not include any Energy Bill Relief Scheme discount.
Does your business need a half hourly meter?
If your business uses a lot of electricity, you might need to have a half hourly electricity meter installed . These meters automatically send readings to your supplier every half an hour and ensure you're billed accurately.
These meters are fitted at businesses that have a maximum demand of 100kW or greater in any half-hour period during the day. If your business uses this much energy, you must have one installed by law. Half hourly meters are optional for businesses that have a maximum demand of 70kW or more.
For more information, check out our guide to half hourly electricity meters .
How to compare business electricity quotes and switch to a better deal
The terms of commercial electricity contracts mean businesses are only allowed to sign a new deal once these contracts are within their ‘renewal window’, which is usually within six months of the current contract's end date.
Once your energy deal enters this renewal window, your current supplier should send you a renewal offer. These terms are rarely the most competitive, so it makes sense to run a comparison to see if there are better rates on offer.
To switch to a new deal, you need to do the following:
- Step 1 – Get in touch with the supplier you want to provide your electricity.
- Step 2 – Let them know more about your business and its energy usage.
- Step 3 – See what prices they offer you.
- Step 4 – Let your old and new suppliers know you’re switching.
- Step 5 – Wait for your new business electricity supply to take effect.
If your switch gets rejected, it could be for any number of reasons, but the most common explanation is that you owe money to your current supplier. If you get turned down, contact your supplier as soon as possible to resolve the issue.
All being well though, once all parties have been informed of the switch, the rest is handled by the suppliers themselves, so you shouldn’t experience any break in your supply.
So far, so good. But the only way to make absolutely sure you’re on the best deal is to repeat this process with every supplier – that simple five-step process doesn’t seem quite so simple when you have to repeat it ten or more times over!
And that’s why busy business owners are better off employing the services of the experts at Uswitch for Business. One quick call is all it takes to run a range of quotes on your behalf. Here's how we can help you switch electricity in just three simple steps.
- Step 1 – Give us your postcode and we'll use smart data to find out about your current contract and energy usage.
- Step 2 – Our experts compare deals from a panel of trusted UK suppliers and talk you through the results on a quick call.
- Step 3 – You choose the deal that best suits your needs and budget, and we'll take care of the rest of the switch for you.
Our expert knowledge of the commercial energy market means we can advise you on which tariff best suits the needs of your business, and even assist in the switching process by providing all of the information and documents you need.
There'll be no digging or drilling at your premises and no disruption to your supply unless you need a new electricity meter installed.
To find out more about how we can help make the switching process even easier for your business, call us today on 0800 188 4930 .
How to get the best deal for your business
It’s easy to assume that the cheapest electricity tariff is the best deal for your business. Although getting a cheaper deal will no doubt be your top priority – it’s all about the bottom line in business, after all - the truth is that suppliers can have much more to offer.
Opting for the cheapest tariff should mean you’ll be paying less for your electricity, but if the supplier you choose isn’t the best fit for your business, you could run into problems further down the line, which could lead to a disruption in your supply, or even see you paying more than you budgeted for.
To make sure you’re on the best deal with the best supplier for you, check out our business energy suppliers’ page to see the benefits that you can expect from each supplier to help you make a more informed switching decision.
Then get the ball rolling on your business electricity switch and start saving, by calling us today on 0800 188 4930 .

UK Business Electricity Comparison
Whether you're trying to reduce your business expenses, or simply want to make sure that you're getting the best electricity rates possible - it's always important to compare business electricity prices.

With so many business electricity suppliers out there, you may be finding it hard to narrow down your options. If you're feeling unsure, this handy guide has everything you need to know about business electricity - so that cutting your bills will be effortless.
It may seem simple, but taking the time to do some research is the best way to get to know the market, check what's available, and secure the best business tariffs for your needs.
If you'd like any further information, scroll to the bottom for the answers to some key FAQs!

How to Compare Business Electricity Prices
In order to help you find the best electricity rates around - here's some vital information on all aspects of business electricity. From useful tips to selecting a reputable supplier - this guide has everything covered.
Types of Business Electricity Tariffs
Firstly, it's important to understand the different kinds of energy tariffs available, as this will allow you to make the right choice for your business' energy needs.
Some of the most common options for businesses include:

Fixed-rate tariffs
With fixed-rate electricity rates, you'll pay your supplier a pre-agreed rate per kWh. These kinds of tariffs usually come with a fixed term, which can be anything from 1 year to 5 years, depending on your contract.
Having fixed electricity rates can be a great way to protect yourself against rising energy costs - as the price you pay per kWh won't change at all during your contract.

Deemed Rates
The majority of businesses who find themselves being charged deemed rates probably haven't reached an agreement with their energy supplier at all.
You'll usually incur deemed rates if you've been using electricity and gas without signing a contract with your supplier. This might be if your business has recently moved into a new building, or if you forgot to renew your old contract before the deadline.
Remember, most of the time a deemed rate contract will not be the best deal your supplier has to offer. In order to make savings on your energy consumption, it's important to switch to a new tariff or supplier as soon as you realise you're being charged deemed rates .

Variable-rate tariffs
Unlike with fixed-rate tariffs, where your costs per kWh stay the same - with a variable contract, your electricity rates will fluctuate alongside the market.
This is a great option if you're unhappy with the standard rate your supplier offers for a fixed tariff.
As your electricity rates will follow current market guidelines, you might actually be able to make huge savings in the event that energy prices fall. However, if market prices rocket sky-high, you'll have to be prepared to cover those costs, too.

Rollover Contracts
Similar to deemed rates - a rollover contract with your supplier will begin if you forget to renew or cancel your old contract by a certain deadline.
As you'll still be using gas and electricity, your supplier is allowed to put you on a rollover contract to cover your energy use. This type of contract is unlikely to offer a good deal, and you may find yourself paying far too much in business electricity bills.
The best thing to do is to stay on top of your current contract's terms so that you avoid rollover contracts altogether. If you do find yourself on a rollover contract, switch to a better rate as soon as you can!
What your Business Electricity Bill Covers
It's important to be aware of what exactly your bill will include - so that you don't get caught out at the end of the month!
Most energy bills are made up of 2 parts - the unit cost, and the standing charge .
The unit cost is how much you need to pay per kWh used - if you're on a fixed rate tariff, this rate will stay the same throughout your contract. If you're on a variable rate tariff, expect your unit cost to fluctuate each month.
The standing charge is an additional fee that your energy supplier will use to cover the costs involved in providing electricity to your business. For each day that your business uses its electricity supply, your provider will add the standing charge fee to your bill.
Therefore, it's always worth weighing up the different unit costs and standard charge rates offered by different business energy suppliers . This way, you can be assured you've found the best deal for all aspects of your electricity bill.

5 Top Tips for Reducing Business Electricity Rates
Here are some of the most effective ways to reduce energy wastage and keep those business electricity costs as low as possible!

Keep an Eye on the Market
Staying on top of the market and comparing business electricity rates is the best way to avoid being overcharged by energy suppliers.
If you're unhappy with a certain deal, don't be afraid to shop around and see what's available. Switching supplier is surprisingly easy, and it can make a huge difference to your electricity bill.

Measure your Energy Efficiency
Doing a full audit of your business' energy consumption is an excellent way to see exactly where your money is going. You'll be able to work out where most of your electricity is being used and pinpoint any areas where energy is being wasted.
It's a good idea to do two checks - one during the working day, and one after hours. This way you can be certain that you're not consuming unnecessary electricity at night! It's relatively simple to conduct these checks yourself, but you can always ask a professional if you're feeling unsure!

Check your Electricity Meter
It's vital that you check your meter is in good working order so that you can be certain it's sending accurate data to your business electricity supplier.
For bigger businesses or ones with large electricity needs, it's a good idea to switch to half-hourly meters , to make your energy data even more accurate. You don't want to get caught out by a meter that only measures at the height of your working day!

Invest in your Space
Maintaining your building and switching to efficient appliances can have a huge impact on your business electricity rates over time.
Actions as simple as switching to LED and CFL light bulbs, or turning off the heating on the weekends can drastically reduce your electricity consumption. You should also ensure your building is well insulated, and keep doors closed to prevent drafts that can affect your thermostat.

Get Employees Involved
When you're trying to make a big change - it's always a good idea to involve your staff members!
From encouraging people to reduce printing, to reminding everyone to turn off unnecessary lights, working as a team will make combating electricity waste much easier! Even something as simple as asking staff to shut down unused computers (or installing technology that will) can greatly improve your overall energy costs.
Electricity Prices by Business Size
You may be wondering if the size of your company has an impact on the business electricity tariff you pay. The short answer to this question is yes.
Interestingly, electricity suppliers often charge smaller businesses a higher rate per kWh, whereas larger businesses are usually offered a lower rate per kWh. The standing charge can also fluctuate according to the size of your company.
This happens for several reasons.
The majority of large businesses will have huge electricity needs. Therefore, it's important they find reasonable energy tariffs, to avoid wasting large amounts of money. Larger businesses will often negotiate a bulk consumption discount and are more likely to recruit brokers to help them achieve better rates.
In contrast, smaller businesses usually have much lower energy requirements, so they may be less likely to shop around for different contracts, and are unlikely to consume enough electricity to warrant a bulk discount.
Energy experts recommend that you take the time to compare different business electricity rates - regardless of how big your company is. It's the best way to find reasonable tariffs, and knowing more about the electricity market, in general, can be a huge asset when negotiating with different suppliers.
How to Compare Business Electricity Tariffs
Here are three easy ways to find out more and secure the best business electricity rates possible:

Research the Market
Doing your own research is a great way to understand the commercial electricity market better, and make sure you find a supplier that's right for you and your business.
The best way to start is by noting down your business' current energy use and tariff. You should then create a list of different suppliers to consider - try to include a mix of national and local options, and look for those with better customer reviews. You can always consult online supplier lists if you need to. Then, call or email each supplier on your list in order to get an electricity quote. Keep key information about your business to hand, as factors like your location and average energy usage can affect your quote.
Ask how much they charge per kWh for businesses of your size, and note down their standing charge, too. You should also ask about the different contract types available, and check if there are any bulk discounts available to business customers.
Once you've gathered all of your information, you can start comparing different suppliers. Finding the cheapest business electricity provider on your list is a good place to start - but you should also take into account the contract terms and supplier's customer satisfaction to avoid getting caught out. If you find an energy contract that's better than your current deal, you may want to switch suppliers! If you're not sure how to do so, then scroll down for more information.

Use Online Help
If you'd prefer not to research each supplier yourself, then you can find a host of excellent comparison tools online.
Most work by taking details such as your postcode, business size, and average energy consumption, and using this information to search for different business tariffs.
You'll then be able to view a personalised list of electricity supplier rates - allowing you to easily search and compare different options. Most online tools also offer information on customer satisfaction, so you can be sure you're selecting a reliable provider.

Ask a Broker
Asking a broker is an excellent idea if you've got a larger business, or want help negotiating an electricity contract.
They're usually energy experts, who have an in-depth knowledge of the electricity and gas market, and know where to find great deals. The majority of energy brokers will ask for some key details, such as business size and location, before providing you with a few different electricity contracts to choose between.
If you're searching for an electricity supplier that offers bulk discounts - your broker will know exactly where to look. If you decide to change supplier, your broker can take care of all the paperwork for you - making it an entirely effortless process.
Most electricity brokers are actually free to collaborate with as they work on commission - so it's certainly worth getting in touch with one!
How to Switch Your Energy Supplier
You've done your research and found the best business electricity rates available - but how do you actually switch business electricity supplier?
Once you've decided which electricity supplier to move to, it's actually a fairly simple process and is very similar for both domestic and business customers. Here's how:

Changing Electricity Suppliers
Confirm your new electricity prices with your chosen provider, and let them know that you want to take up their offer.
They'll then ask you for some key details, such as your business name, address, old electricity supplier, and average annual energy consumption. Having recent energy bills to hand can be useful, too.
They'll also ask for your business banking details, in order to set up a direct debit for the new contract.
Once your new business electricity supplier has the information they need, they'll take care of the rest!
They'll contact your old provider in order to arrange a changeover date - this may take up to 3 weeks, but contact your new supplier if you have any questions.
You should receive a final bill from your old supplier, after which time everything will switch to your new supplier. Your electricity supply will not be affected during this time.

Leaving an Electricity Contract Early
Many contracts, especially fixed-rate varieties, require you to stay with a specific provider for a fixed term.
If you need to end your electricity contract early due to a business move - then don't worry. In this case, you'll usually be exempt from the exit fee, so you won't have to think about extra charges!

Other Things to Consider
Upfront Costs: When you begin a new tariff, you may be required to pay some fees upfront. Some providers require security deposits or a few months worth of payments in advance - so double check your contract to avoid being caught out.
Meter Instalment: Certain contracts may require you to install specific meters - like a half-hourly or smart meter - to monitor your business electricity use. You'll need to schedule the instalment with your provider, so it's certainly something to look out for.
Payment Arrangements: For a fixed-rate tariff, setting up a direct debit to cover your bills is simple. However, if your business opts for a variable-rate tariff, you may have to adjust your payment arrangements each month as energy prices fluctuate.
Frequently asked questions
Why switch business energy suppliers.
You can save hundreds and sometimes thousands of pounds by switching business energy provider. It’s important to keep a handle on commercial expenditure, particularly energy bills, for three reasons. First and foremost, bills often make up a large chunk of overall business costs. Secondly, businesses generally use much more energy than domestic households. And thirdly, businesses can reinvest their savings into other areas, helping them grow and become more profitable.
How quickly can I switch business energy supplier?
You can compare deals in under 60 seconds using Business Energy UK, so you can select a new business energy supplier quickly. This is just the start of the process, but the majority of work is taken care of by the energy companies behind the scenes. It typically takes between four and six weeks to complete the switch. To avoid any unnecessary delays, ensure you’ve provided all the information your new supplier needs early on.
Is it possible to switch to a tariff with no standing charge?
Standing charges involve a daily payment that remains the same, no matter how much energy is used, and most business energy contracts include them. Although standard charges are very common, some suppliers offer tariffs with no standing charges, which can be useful if you run a seasonal business or do not open every day.
Can you get dual fuel business energy tariffs?
Gas and electricity are not packaged together in business energy tariffs, so there’s no equivalent to the dual fuel offerings that you are able to choose with your domestic energy deals. Business energy suppliers will instead offer separate energy quotes and draw up separate contracts for business gas and electricity. It’s a good idea to choose the same contract length for both, making these easy to manage.

Business Electricity FAQs
Is electricity cheaper for businesses.
In terms of cost per kWh, businesses usually do pay a lower rate.
This is due to the fact that businesses have a higher electricity consumption than private residences, so they'll able to negotiate lower energy costs, and can be eligible for bulk discounts.
However, a business will have to pay a much higher amount of VAT on their electricity , and this can be as much as four times the amount that homeowners pay.
Ultimately, electricity prices are constantly changing in accordance with the market, so it's important to shop around and stay informed - whether you own a business or not!
Who is the cheapest supplier of electricity?
The answer to this question will depend on a variety of different factors.
Business energy prices can be influenced by market shifts, your location, company size, and electricity needs.
For this reason, if you're looking to switch business electricity provider, it's important to do your research to ensure you've secured the best deal. Some providers may be able to offer a great unit cost, but require a high standing charge from businesses of your size.
Taking the time to consider different rates, contract types, and providers will not only improve your knowledge, but it will help you to negotiate a better deal for your business, too.
If you're struggling to find reasonable business electricity rates, you can always ask experts to help you.
Do small businesses pay more for electricity than large businesses?
In terms of business electricity cost per kWh, a smaller business will usually have to pay more than a larger business.
Bigger businesses can often negotiate lower electricity and gas prices simply because they use so much more over the average year. They can also be eligible for bulk discounts on their electricity, and often have to pay lower standing charges.
However, whilst a larger business may be given a lower tariff, a smaller business might save money simply by using less electricity, and will therefore have lower annual bills.
Ultimately, if you suspect you're paying unreasonable business electricity prices, it's always worth shopping around for a better deal.
Why are my business electricity bills so expensive?
When you own a business, paying your gas and electricity bills can be eye-watering.
If you consistently have to pay expensive bills, it's worth examining your business to see if there's anywhere you're wasting electricity and money.
For example, if your company constantly has the heating on, even after hours, this can be a huge drain on your business electricity supply. Correctly insulating your building, putting your thermostat on a timer, and reducing drafts can make a huge difference over time.
You should also check how efficient your electrical appliances are. Switch to LED or CFL bulbs, and opt for tech with lower electricity needs.
Try to get the whole business involved, so remind staff to turn off any unused lights or computers!
You should also check your business electricity tariff. Make sure you haven't been switched to deemed rates or a rollover contract, and take a look at other providers to check you're on a reasonable plan. It's fairly simple to switch business electricity provider, so it's worth making the change if you find better contracts elsewhere.
Don't forget to check your electricity meter, to ensure it's in full working order, and sending accurate data to your energy provider. A larger business may benefit from a half-hourly or smart meter.
Overall, if your business electricity bills are too high - just a few simple checks and changes can help you bring costs back down!
What are the benefits of having an electricity meter?
Using a meter to measure power usage at your business has a surprising number of benefits.
Many suppliers now require companies to install a half-hourly or smart meter as part of their contracts - and this is for several good reasons.
Firstly, an accurate meter will show detailed information on your business electricity use. This way, you can see where you might be wasting power, and therefore wasting money.
You'll also be able to make an accurate forecast for your monthly bill, which is incredibly useful when budgeting for your business. You also won't have to pay 'estimated bills' from your supplier if you forget to tell them about your electricity usage.
A meter is also a good choice for those hoping to make their business more eco-friendly. Learning more about your electricity habits can encourage your staff to make more conscious choices - such as printing less, or turning off lights and appliances more often.
Finally, most business electricity suppliers will install a meter entirely free of charge - so why not try one today?

From small start-ups and coffee shops to office blocks and corporate conglomerates, businesses of all sizes need to take care of their energy bills.
High energy prices could seriously affect your operating costs and eat into your profits, so it’s worth making sure you don’t burn through too much of your money to keep the lights glowing and the coffee flowing.
Business energy
Much like domestic customers, a business may well stick with the same supplier for a long time without changing.
Unfortunately, this often means businesses will be on higher tariffs rather than the cheaper ones they could be using.
A business’ energy rates depend on more variables than those of a domestic user including, but not restricted to, the following:
- Credit rating
- Business type (whether you're a sole trader or limited company, for example)
- The sector you operate in
- Annual consumption
So how can you make sure your firm isn’t over-charged? The answer is as simple as comparing energy suppliers.
Business energy contracts
One key way of saving money on your business’ energy needs is to keep a sharp eye on your contracts
It’s worth comparing different types of contract to ensure you’re on the right one for your business needs.
- Rollover contract - is automatically renewed until it's cancelled and may not give you the best deal.
- Fixed-term contract - should lock you into a certain price for a number of years.
- Deemed rates - these tariffs usually apply to businesses that have just moved to a property - they can be very expensive.
Climate change levy
Another good way of saving money on your business energy bills is to make your business as green as possible .
One incentive to make your business more energy efficient is the Climate Change Levy (CCL) . †
This is a tax imposed on businesses in the industrial, agricultural, commercial, or public services sectors.
Your business may be able to get a reduction on the main rates of the levy if you can prove you’re committed to reducing emissions.
The CCL is paid as part of your energy bill, so you don’t have to worry about paying it separately.
The only kinds of business that don’t need to pay the CCL are charities that engage in non-commercial activities, domestic energy users, and any businesses that only use small amounts of energy
CMA energy market investigation
It might sound like the burden of making your energy bill cheaper is largely yours to bear, and this is true - to a degree.
But there’s also a large push for reforms in the energy market – which the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has been listening to. †
It investigated the energy market and announced its provisional decisions in March 2016.
They estimated that microbusiness customers of the 'big six' suppliers were paying £180m more a year (between 2007 and 2014) than they would have in a better functioning market.
The most attractive prices are typically found with 'acquisition tariffs' - which are available to switchers opting to fix their supply for a year or more - while the most expensive are typically applied to 'out of contract' rates where businesses have never actively looked at their energy supply contract.

Why should I switch my business electricity to a new supplier?

Tell us you're moving Other energy providers may ask for at least one month's notice of your planned moving date. 2. Take an electricity meter reading at both your old and new premises when you move.
3. Pay all outstanding bills to make switching easier
4. Compare business electricity prices and agree a contract when you move into your new premises to avoid paying higher 'deemed' rates

Are Business Electricity Prices Rising?
Yes. Business electricity rates are rising and have been for the last 10 years. Due to several world events spiking wholesale energy prices, we have seen a much sharper increase in business electricity prices since 2021.
Here's how the Government's business electricity pricing updates have changed over the years:

Should I Still Switch Business Electricity Supplier?
Despite rising business electricity rates, many companies are switching suppliers for peace of mind and predictable monthly outgoings. With uncertainty around future price increases, securing business electricity rates today means you can go back to focusing on what matters most, your business.
When you compare business electricity prices, you're not only securing your rates in an uncertain market, but you'll also be making the most out of your Energy Bill Discount Scheme (EBDS).
What Information Do I Need To Compare Business Electricity Prices?
It is easy to compare business electricity prices. We only need some basic information about your business to provide an accurate quote.
- We'll need some basic information (business name, address, contact details)
- Your electricity usage for 1-years worth of usage (you can find this on your business electricity bills)
- Who is your current business electricity supplier?
- What times does your business operate and require a business electricity supply?
Having this information to hand will mean that you can get an accurate business electricity quote at the best possible rates when comparing with us. Thinking about when you use more electricity helps us determine what tariff can save you more money. For example, a company typically operating during the evenings and weekend may benefit from a multi-rate meter (Economy 7 or 10.)
What If My Current Business Electricity supplier Is Cheaper?
This can sometimes happen. Typically suppliers will send out a renewal that is more expensive than taking a new contract out. It doesn't make sense but this does mean you have some leverage if you compare business electricity prices.
Many customers may find that their current business electricity supplier is offering cheaper rates to new customers. This is where we can help. If you switch supplier using our comparison service, we'll take care of all the negotiating for you. It simply means we'll switch your tariff over whilst you remain with your current electricity supplier. You will receive a new business electricity contract and the final bill from your old tariff all from the same supplier.
What Business Electricity Tariffs Are Available in 2023?
There are several types of business electricity tariffs available, but most businesses will either select a variable rate or a fixed rate tariff.
The type of business electricity tariff you choose will depend on the needs of your business. If you prefer certainty and consistent pricing, a fixed rate tariff will likely be the best option. If your business is particularly environmentally conscious, a green energy tariff could be a great option.
When you switch with British Business Energy, you can receive advice on the right tariff type for your business needs. Here, you can find some of the most popular business electricity tariffs offered by suppliers.

Fixed-Rate Tariffs
This is the most common tariff offered by business electricity suppliers. It allows businesses to lock in cheaper business electricity prices. It does not offer much flexibility and you are usually tied into a contract for 1-4 years.
This means you cannot switch business electricity to a better deal if wholesale prices go down in the middle of your contract.
Variable Rate Tariffs
The price of the electricity supplied to your business premises can move up and down in line with the energy market. Selecting a variable rate tariff offers flexibility and could save money. This is not a guarantee.
On top of these two popular tariffs, you can switch to a Green Electricity Tariff. Switching has become difficult in 2023 with the ongoing energy crisis and surging wholesale energy prices. To see the latest business electricity prices, you should compare regularly to see if fixing is the right option for you.
Green Energy Tariff
Many businesses prioritise reducing the impact on the climate alongside finding cheaper electricity deals. Switching to a green business electricity tariff is a first step towards green goals.
In the UK, green energy tariffs are offered by nearly every business electricity supplier. When comparing business electricity with British Business Energy, we will include green energy tariffs in our results.
Whilst doing your part for the planet, the benefits of supporting green business electricity comes with increased corporate social responsibility.
What Are The Current Business Electricity Prices?
As wholesale costs increase, business electricity prices have risen dramatically. Despite this, it’s important to remember that the prices you pay in 2023 will vary based on a number of factors.
One of the most important factors is the size and location of your business premises; including the amount of electricity your business consumes. Larger businesses with higher electricity usage can often access a cheaper unit rate than smaller businesses.
This can make it difficult for businesses to understand whether a unit rate offered is suitable for them. Here, we’ve broken down the average business electricity tariff by business size based on 2-year fixed-rate contracts.
Why it’s Important to Compare Business Electricity Suppliers
The process of comparing suppliers can be time-consuming. This can lead to businesses paying more than they need to for their electricity.
By using an energy broker such as British Business Energy to compare the latest prices a few months before the end of your contract, you can avoid expensive deemed rates and stay on a great deal.
As with many other products, your initial renewal quote is rarely the best price available. By comparing the latest prices, you can quickly discover how your renewal quote stacks up against a wide range of trusted business electricity suppliers.
You can even stay with your original supplier if you’re happy with their service. The greater buying of an energy broker can often help you find lower rates from your current supplier.

Our expert large consumption team will work with you to find competitive business electricity rates with solutions that meet your exact requirements.
Business Electricity FAQs
When is the best time to switch business electricity rates.
To avoid any potential exit fees, you should make note of your renewal window. This is usually around 12 months before your contract comes to an end. You can then lock in the latest business electricity prices and switch as soon as your current deal ends.
If you’re moving premises, you will likely be able to switch business electricity suppliers without any early exit fees as your contract is typically attached to the premises.
How Long Does It Take to Switch Business Electricty Suppliers?
Once you’ve selected the business electricity tariff you’d like to switch to, it will usually take around 4-6 weeks to complete your switch.
By switching with British Business Energy, the entire switch will be managed on your behalf. Our experts will keep you up to date with the progress of your switch and answer any questions you may have.
Do I Have to Pay a Standing Charge?
Most standard tariffs will include a daily standing charge alongside your unit rate. However, businesses can switch to a no standing charge tariff to avoid this daily fee.
However, it is worth bearing in mind that your unit rate may be higher on a no standing charge tariff. For those who with high energy consumption, a no standing charge tariff may not be the cheapest option. With British Business Energy, you can quickly compare the full estimated costs of your tariff options to help you find the right deal for your business.
How Much VAT Will I Pay on My Business Electricity?
VAT is charged at a standard rate of 20% on gas and electricity. If you operate a charity or not-for-profit organisation, you could be eligible for a VAT reduction of 5%.
In many cases, your electricity supplier will not automatically add this reduction so it’s important you contact your supplier to make sure you are receiving the full deduction you’re entitled to.
What If I Have Multiple Buildings?
If your business operates across multiple locations, some suppliers may offer you a discount on your electricity you use.
You may be eligible for a multi-site meter which can help you consolidate your business energy bills.

Find the best business electricity prices with our comprehensive comparison service
Instead of scouring what can seem like an endless list of business electricity suppliers in the UK, we can help you compare the business electricity rates of the 'Big Six' including; British Gas, EDF Energy, E. ON, npower, Scottish Power and SSE, alongside a variety of small-scale suppliers.
Comparing business electricity rates is completely free and 100% impartial, which means in just a few quick clicks you could find the cheapest business electricity. We are committed to helping you find the best business electricity deals, by comparing both business electricity tariffs and the supplier's ability to provide the best quality service. There are so many ways to save on your business electricity bills, regardless of whether you are looking to switch a large or small business electricity plan.
Business electricity costs are based on the fluctuating wholesale cost, which will change daily. Although rates are often lower than domestic electricity, the VAT rate for business electricity is charged at 20%, rather than the domestic rate of 5%. These differences can make comparing electricity for business premises difficult, as there are so many individual tariffs available. However, our comprehensive comparison service is designed to make it as simple as possible to compare the unit rates and current offers, so that you can switch to the best electricity for business customers with ease.
How does the business electricity comparison work?
The ideal time to compare your business electricity is before your renewal window, which is usually between 1 and 6 months prior to the expiration date of your current electricity contract. This gives you time to compare the available options and find a competitive tariff. Alternatively, you can wait for your current supplier to provide a renewal offer, as this will give you a starting price to compare the quotes from other providers.
Comparing business electricity with our dedicated team is surprisingly simple, all we require are a few details. To ensure you are provided with an accurate quote, it is advisable to provide us with an accurate estimation of how much energy you are likely to use or information on how much you currently spend. To enable us to compare the available business electricity online quotes, it is also useful to provide your location and the tariff details of your current business electricity plan.
This will enable us to calculate and provide an accurate comparison of the potential business electricity rates and the savings they could provide. The electricity prices will vary between different regions of the UK, as the charges which the local distribution networks add to the energy supply within your area will vary greatly.
We will compare business electricity contracts for businesses and present you with the best deals available to you. All you need to do is compare the unit rates, standing charges and the terms of the available plans and select which option works best for your business electricity requirements.
Which business electricity tariffs are available?
By comparing the available rates and ensuring you are on the best tariff for your own business requirements, you will ensure your business is not locked into a high-cost rollover tariff. The tariffs available may depend on the type of business electricity meter currently fitted within your premises. The most common meters are half-hourly meter which are often used in businesses with large consumption levels, multi-site meters and the cost-saving smart meters.
Fixed-term contract
Variable tariff.
A fixed-term contract is usually the cheapest option as it locks in a price for a set number of years. However, it is worth remembering that if you leave a fixed rate tariff early, you may be required to pay an exit fee. Although, in many situations there are still savings when taking into account any fees thanks to the new reduced business gas prices. When signing up to a new provider it is possible to lock in a rate for a fixed period of between 1 and 5 years, which means you will know exactly what you will be required to pay over the agreed period. Although, it is worth considering that the longer fixed rate period you choose, the more expensive the tariff.
The opposite to a fixed rate tariff is a variable rate contract, which will require you to pay the current market rates for energy for each unit used. This means you business will be impacted by fluctuations in gas prices and your bills each month could change even if the same amount of gas is used every month.

How do I switch my business electricity?
The information you provide to us will be passed across to your new supplier, who will contact you to confirm the switch. The new supplier will then take care of the switching process and your supply will not be interrupted at any point during the switchover. The new electricity supplier will notify the current provider and will manage the switchover process on your behalf. You will receive a final bill from your old supplier, which you will need to pay to close the account.
The required information will be simple to find on your most recent electricity bill such as, the current suppliers' details, the type of business electricity you currently receive and how much you are using. The new supplier will also need your meter point reference number (MPRN). The easiest place to find this will be at the top of your latest bill, it will contain 11 digits.
How much could I save on my business electricity?
The amount you save will largely depend on the size of your business, but the potential savings can be huge. There are some businesses which are able to save £1,000s by switching, however until you provide your specific details it is not possible to give an accurate figure. As the individual business electricity tariffs are designed for each business, it is difficult to suggest a typical tariff as no two will be exactly the same.
In 2015 the Competition and Markets Authority reported that roughly 40% of businesses in the UK had not switched energy providers in the past five years, with 39% never switching. This means there are thousands of businesses which have been overpaying for years without knowing. In fact, we are so confident we can beat your energy renewal quote that if you find a cheaper option, we will give you up to £1,000.
If you never want to overpay for your business electricity again, we will take care of the hard work by providing you with a variety of business electricity quotes from suppliers who will handle the whole process for you. We are dedicated to helping you find the best deal from the most customer focused suppliers. To find out more about our comparison services for business gas and electricity, please contact our team today.
Why should I switch business electricity suppliers?
There are three possible ways to save money on your electricity bill; using less energy, making energy efficiency improvements and switching suppliers. The easiest and quickest way to reduce your energy bills is to switch suppliers. This is because the majority of suppliers of electricity for businesses in the UK will provide the best rates to new customers.
To get the best contract for your business you should consider a variety of factors, for example are your requirements likely to change and how long will you be based at your current premises. The prices of business electricity can vary greatly as the tariffs are based on your specific circumstances, however we can help you compare individual quotes to save you money on future electricity bills.

However you use the power, you’ll need to find a supply that is efficient and does not cost the earth.
It’s always advisable to shop around for the best deal rather than simply allowing your existing contract to roll over with the same supplier, as the cost of this will creep up and up, year after year.
The way to make the energy market more competitive would be to encourage everyone to switch business electricity more often.
Which are the best business electricity suppliers in the UK?

As there are so many commercial suppliers to choose from your main aim is to find the one that offers the cheapest business electricity and gas deals for your company.

How to find the best business electricity prices in the UK
If you’re looking for the best business electricity prices, there are a number of things you’ll need to consider before signing the virtual dotted line.
The main ones are:
- The type of tariff you need
- How much energy your company uses
- Which suppliers cover your region
Using these details with our business electricity prices checker, you will be able to compare quotes from suppliers to find the best deal – and because we update these on a daily basis, you’ll always be in the know.
What types of business electricity tariffs are there?
Business tariffs – the way suppliers charge for electricity – tend to be:
- Fixed: The price stays the same during your contract OR
- Variable: The price rises and falls during your contract
Business electricity prices can vary by monthly cost, business size, whether you have online or paper bills and how your energy is sourced.
Considerations for business electricity prices
While you can be crafty and keep checking in on our comparison site, the price of your business electricity tariff will depend on several factors:
- How big your business is: Energy usage will depend on the size of your premises and the amount of staff using electricity at any one time. A manufacturing plant will obviously use far more energy than a salon with two hairdressers.
- When you use the majority of electricity. You could benefit by paying less for electricity used in off-peak hours. Off-peak hours are usually between 10pm and 8am.
- Where your company is located: Your choice of supplier depends on where you are based. This is because not all energy companies offer services in every area.
- How many sites you have: Your electricity company may offer you a reduced rate if you show you need a multi-site tariff to supply more than one location.
If you have just one site but plan to move soon, you will want a short-term contract. These can vary for new customers from 28 days to nine months.
How to barter for the best business electricity prices in the UK
Unlike domestic energy, you can negotiate prices with business energy suppliers, so be sure to shop around before just letting your existing contract roll over another year.
With a fixed tariff, the amount you pay for each kilowatt hour (kWh) of electricity stays the same but you will get tied into contracts of a year or more.
Variable tariffs depend on the wholesale price of energy. These usually work out more expensively.
These include rolling contracts which are automatically renewed, 28-day contracts and deemed rates between contracts. Only consider these types of contracts for short-term use as you may end up paying extortionate fees.
Always use our comparison site to avoid paying hiked up rates when you are offered renewal prices.
P272 IS HERE!

for the Best Rates
Many of our business customers have found that by doing a quick and easy online comparison, they were able to cut their bill by £100’s each year. Not all suppliers offer the same rates when it comes to business electricity deals, so it is important to see what each has to offer – and which tariff is best for your commercial property.
Suppliers in Your Part of the Country
Being in business, you’ll know that suppliers only service certain areas. However, it’s important to remember that there is more than one business electricity supplier where you are. and it is in your business’ best interest to see what each has to offer.
Also, your choices are not limited to the Big Six. They may be the most well-known, but they are not the only fish in the sea! Business Electric will help you compare rates between several suppliers that offer the best rates for your business.
From small enterprises to large corporate ventures, we know that every penny saved is a penny earned. Let us help you cut costs in order to build up your bottom line. Within just a few minutes you could find a supplier that offers rates considerably lower than you now pay.
Take our quick and easy online business electric comparison and see for yourself.

The price of gas and electric for businesses per unit is similar to domestic use. However, businesses must pay 20% VAT while residential customers only pay 5%. Companies also have to pay for ‘green taxes’ including the the Climate Change Levy (CCL)
If you were able to purchase electricity directly from generating companies you’d expect to pay a much lower rate. But most of us purchase through electricity or gas suppliers – and this is where prices get bumped up.
Business electricity rates are forever fluctuating for unit prices per kWh and let’s not forget that a standing charge is added. So, while the offer of a low rate is always tempting, the daily charge will be higher resulting in an annual bill of around the same amount.
What are the average business electricity rates (kWh)?
Rates can vary depending on the business type, for example, a salon would be using straighteners and hairdryers all day, while a newsagent may just use lights and an electric till.
For a small business using between 15,000 and 25,000 kWh of electricity per year, the national electricity price is 14.40p, ranging from 13.86p to 15.60p by region.
How much is small business electricity?
This is an example of an average UK business, to demonstrate how your bill is compiled and how much your business electricity is per kWh.
- Annual consumption – 14,000 kWh
- Unit price per kWh – 15p
- Daily standing charge – 29p per day
Using the figures above, the business gets charged £105.85 for the standing charge (365 days x 0.29) plus £2,100 for the electricity used (14,000 x 0.15). The bill here would be £2,205.86. But VAT and Climate Change Levy are then added on top.
Contract lengths and costs
The table below, taken from one of the Big 6 energy suppliers, demonstrates how much business electricity is per kWh. The unit prices and standing charges can vary by contract length.

What factors affect prices?
Those who use more energy, such as manufacturers, will pay a much lower rate due to higher consumption. But daily standing charges tend to make bills average out.
The type of business you own dictates the consumption usage patterns during the week. Not all businesses work 9-5 on weekdays. Those working weekends pay different rates than during the day.
Your current energy provider may be the most expensive on the market but you won’t know unless you do a price comparison through our checker tool so see if you really are on the best business electricity rates for your business.
Region also affects business energy rates. Scotland’s prices are very high for the UK, while the Midlands has some of the lowest.

Naturally businesses have employees and so they are bound to use much more power, lighting and energy on everyday tasks than a homeowner.
Every business has different demands. This is determined by the industry, number of employees, location and more. Therefore it’s much harder to determine a one-tariff-suits-all.

How can I make my business more energy-efficient?
Using outdated equipment and leaving lights or heating on for several hours at a time, can cause a surge in energy use. Consider gadgets like timers for radiators and lights or investing in some new monitors.

What is business electricity?
Simply put, business electricity is the electricity that is supplied exclusively for business use. Although business electricity and home electricity may come from the same source, or even same supplier, switching business electricity makes things a little trickier due to the way commercial energy deals are set up.

Should you get a home energy or business energy contract?
How to find the cheapest business electricity supplier, do you need a business electricity account, does the size of your business affect electricity rates, why compare electricity suppliers for business, how much electricity does an average business use, what are the different business electricity contracts.
Although they use the same unit measurement (kWh), home energy and business energy contracts are not the same. Not only do they vary in terms of cost, but also their contract details. This means that although changing suppliers for your home energy is relatively simple, comparing the best home electricity suppliers with the best business gas suppliers can be a little tricky.
If you work from home, you may be wondering whether you should go with a home energy contract or a business energy contract. Although business bills can appear pricier, its energy rates are often cheaper than domestic rates. However, as businesses usually use more energy than households, and may even have to pay 20% VAT on their bills, then a business energy contract will be the pricier of the two.
Despite this, there still are some advantages to going with a business energy contract. If you run a charity or a not-for-profit organisation, there is a chance that you can quality for reduced VAT rate of 5%. Alongside this, if your business uses less than 33 kWh of electricity or less than 145 kWh of gas per day, then you will be able to pay a reduced rate of 5%.
If your business has been rolling along on the same electricity tariff for years, you’re almost certainly missing out on some substantial savings – and simply switching supplier could see your annual energy bills cut in half.
But as a busy business owner, it’s unlikely you’ll have enough hours in the day to even think about switching, and that’s why it makes sense to let our energy experts do all the hard work for you. A quick call is all it takes to assess your energy needs and find a price plan that’s the perfect fit for your business.
It doesn’t matter whether you run a blue-chip company or a corner shop , we’ll compare business electricity providers to find the best deal available and offer you an instant, no obligation quote.
If you’re not completely satisfied with our quote, we’ll keep comparing deals until we find one you’re happy with. Once that’s all sorted, we can guide you through the rest of the switch, step-by-step, to help save you both time and money.
The way commercial energy is bought and sold means business rates are worked out differently to household rates , with commercial deals often the cheaper of the two, so it makes sense to set up a designated electricity account at your business premises.
And because there are no dual fuel business energy tariffs, you’ll have to set up separate accounts for your gas and electricity.
As with domestic energy deals though, there are two charges you need to look out for when comparing quotes:
Standing charge - a set amount you pay no matter how much electricity you use, even if you don’t use any.
Unit cost - the amount you pay for the electricity you use, charged per unit. Although you will fix the unit price for the duration of your deal, the total amount you pay each month will vary depending upon the amount of energy you use.
If you work from home, you’ll only be able to set up a business electricity account if you can prove a significant portion of the energy you use – usually 50% – is for business purposes. This might sound a lot, but just using enough to light and heat your home during business hours could be enough to make you eligible.
To work out your annual electricity rates, your supplier will estimate how much energy your business will need, based upon the type of work it does and the size of its premises.
The table below should give you a rough idea of how much electricity your business should be using, and how much you should be paying in standing charges and unit costs.
Business electricity tariffs are usually set up for a fixed term of between one and five years, and because all businesses have different electricity requirements, it makes sense to tailor your tariff to meet your specific needs.
If, for example, you have a number of electricity meters across multiple sites, you could be better off taking out a multi-site energy plan that puts them all on the one tariff. But if you only have a couple of sites to consider, it might be more cost effective to have them on separate plans.
If you run a large business, or one with a high consumption rate, you should have a half-hourly electricity meter installed. These meters relay accurate usage information to your supplier every 30 minutes, and saves the hassle of potentially inaccurate estimates, which could see you paying for more electricity than you’re actually using.
The average business will use more electricity than the average home, and this higher demand means corporate customers can often negotiate better rates.
On the flipside, a higher demand coupled with rising wholesale electricity prices, as well as environmental levies and taxes, mean it’s easy to rack up big electricity bills . And you need to be especially switched on when your contracts come up for renewal – if you don’t agree a new deal with your current supplier, or negotiate a better one with a new supplier, you’ll be rolled onto an expensive rate, and may even be tied in for another year.
But finding the right deal for your business can take time, effort and no shortage of know-how – and that’s where we can help. Our team of energy experts will not only look to get you the best deal, they’ll also offer advice on how to give termination notice to your current electricity provider and deal with any supplier objections that might arise.
Just let us know a few details about your business and its energy use, either online or over the phone, to run a business electricity comparison. In getting the best deal for your business, we’ll not just consider the cost, but other important factors, such as online billing, customer service and how meter readings are delivered.
Once we find an electricity plan that meets your needs and budget, we’ll take you through each step of the switching process to ensure a hassle-free move.
And the best part is our service is 100% impartial and completely free, so you can be sure we’re working in the best interests of your business and that there’ll be no hidden fees.

How much energy a business uses is highly dependant on the business itself. Even two businesses that seem indistinguishable from one another on a surface level may have different energy demands, and therefore different energy uses. For example, they may operate from different premises, have different opening times, and even a different workforce size, which all contribute to different heating, lighting, and energy efficiency systems.
Below is the average gas usage for a business by size:
- Microbusiness: 10,000 kWh per year
- Small business: 25,000 kWh per year
- Medium business: 45,000 kWh per year
Below is the average electricity usage for a business by size:
- Microbusiness: 5,000 kWh - 15,000 kWh
- Small business: 15,000 kWh – 25,000 kWh
- Medium business: 30,000 kWh – 50,000 kWh

There are four different types of business energy contracts, and the type of contract that will be available to you will depend on the supplier and your circumstances. They are as follows:
- Fixed term business gas and electricity tariffs
- Blend and extend tariffs
- Flex approach tariffs
- Pass through tariffs
It is advised to sign up to a new contract before your current one expires, otherwise your supplier will roll you onto a more expensive rate. For more information, check out our guide to business energy tariffs .

Quick Notes

Need help choosing the right business electricity plan?
Check out our frequently asked questions, are businesses eligible for cheaper electricity.
Businesses tend to get cheaper rates for electricity due to the higher volumes of energy they consume and their ability to negotiate better deals with suppliers. Overall bills are typically higher simply because they use more energy than domestic households. It’s also important to bear in mind that businesses do pay a higher rate of VAT for electricity than households. All this makes it even more important for businesses to shop around when sourcing a new supplier, as the savings can be significant over time.
What is the best comparison site for electricity?
A few different companies allow you to compare business electricity prices, but the best one is Compare Business Electricity. Our user-friendly website can help you find the best deal on your business electricity. We also have a free quote service, which means we will get quotes from a range of suppliers and present them to you so you can decide which one is right for your business.
Do energy suppliers in the UK charge differently?
Yes, they do. There is no standard rate for electricity in the UK. Suppliers charge different rates because of current market conditions, special offers, their own operating costs and even the weather conditions worldwide.
What are current business electricity rates in the UK?
The UK's price per kilowatt hour varies based on the business and the electricity provider. If you’re using a small amount of electricity, then it might be cheaper to pay per unit. However, if you use a lot of energy, it could be more cost-effective to pay by kilowatt hour. To get the best deal for your business, it’s important to compare suppliers and find one that offers competitive rates for your usage level.
What were the average business electricity prices per kWh in 2022?
In 2022, the average unit price for business electricity was 17.73 pence per kWh. Business energy users will also be subject to VAT at the present rate of 20%, while residential consumers will be subject to a reduced rate of 5%. A business may also be liable to additional green taxes, such as the Climate Change Levy (CCL).
If you want to make sure that you’re paying a fair price for your electricity and taking advantage of as many discounts as possible, speak to one of our experts today.
Who is the cheapest energy supplier in the UK in 2023 when you compare business electricity?
There is no definitive answer to this question, as it may depend on several factors, such as the size of your business, the type of energy you use, and where you are located. However, one way to find the cheapest energy supplier in the UK in 2023 is to compare business electricity prices.
Doing so will allow you to see which supplier offers the best deal for your needs. And, since the price is not the only factor you should consider when choosing an energy supplier, be sure to read reviews and compare customer service levels before making a decision. With these tips in mind, you should be able to find the cheapest energy supplier in the UK in 2023.
Which energy supplier is best for 2023 when you compare business electricity?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as the best energy supplier for 2023 will vary depending on the specific needs of your business. However, a good way to compare business electricity suppliers is to look at their rates and reviews from other customers.
Some factors you may want to consider when choosing an energy supplier include the price of electricity, contract length, renewable energy options, customer service, and data allowance. By considering all of these factors, you can find the supplier that is best suited to your business needs and budget.
You should also note that some business electricity suppliers may offer additional services at an additional cost, such as energy management systems or energy efficiency measures. These options can help reduce your electricity usage and costs over time, so it’s worth considering whether these services are worth the extra money.
Why is business electricity so expensive, and why should you compare business electricity?
Businesses have to pay more for electricity than households because they use more energy in general.
Businesses use a lot of electricity because they tend to have many appliances that run all the time - think of all the lights, computers, printers, and heaters in a typical office.
That's why businesses need to compare business electricity rates and find a plan that fits their needs. Businesses can save a lot on their electricity bill by shopping around and comparing rates.
When you compare business electricity, are business electricity tariffs cheaper than domestic?
Business electricity tariffs can be cheaper than domestic tariffs, but this isn't always the case. Some businesses may find they can get a better deal on domestic rates, while others may benefit from a business tariff. It depends on your specific situation.
One thing to remember is that business tariffs usually come with higher usage allowances than domestic tariffs. This means you'll be able to use more energy before your rates go up. So, a business tariff could save you money in the long run if you have high energy usage.
If you're unsure which tariff would be best, it's always worth getting quotes from a few different providers. Contact our consultants at Compare Business Electricity to get a free quote today.
Do I need to notify my energy supplier before switching?
While the switching process is automated to a large extent, you should still provide your old and new supplier with meter readings on the day of your switch to ensure that you’re billed correctly.
Can you switch energy suppliers at any time?
Yes, you have every right to switch energy suppliers at any time, but it’s worth noting you may be charged an exit fee if you leave a fixed contract early. It’s better, therefore, to switch energy suppliers when your contract is coming to an end; however, this is not strictly necessary.
